Stead introduces the books of Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi in light of the latest biblical scholarship. Over the past four decades, there has been an explosion of interest in the postexilic prophets and their role within the Book of the Twelve, which has coincided with paradigm shifts in biblical studies generally. This study guide integrates insights from both historio-critical and literary approaches to examine the authorship, form, structure, and composition of these texts. In particular, this guide explores how the intertextual connections with other scriptures help to shape their meaning. It includes a concise section-by-section overview that highlights key interpretive issues and guides readers in their approach to the text.

Book excerpt: The present volume explores the ever-evolving understandings and diverse manifestations of the Hebrew notion of torah in early Jewish and Christian literature and the different roles torah played within those communities, whether in Judea or in the Hellenistic and early Roman diaspora. This collection of essays is purposefully wide-ranging, with contributors exploring and rethinking some of the most basic scholarly assumptions and preconceptions about the nature of torah in light of new critical approaches and methodologies with the goal of seeing how different vantage points and different conclusions can better address the complexity of the topic and better reflect the ambiguity and fluidity inherent in the concept of torah itself.

How could they actualize their desired community? This book discusses the identity of the post-exilic Israelite community by focusing on the unique rhetorical impetus in the book of Chronicles. Chronicles suggests a picture of the desired future Israel. Yet, the Chronicler does not call for a new identity, creation ex nihilo, from the community but calls for the restoration of the Israelites’ past identity by reporting the history of Israel and Judah. The restoration of their past identity can be actualized when members of the community fulfill portrayed roles and characteristics in Chronicles: worshiping, monotheistic believing, and praying, and Davidic citizenship. Further, recorded prayer plays a crucial role as Chronicles persuades its readers to render or exhibit those roles and characteristics. Prayer invites the community members to participate so that they transform past prayers into their own prayers. By doing so, the prayer participants perceive portrayed roles and characteristics and change their attitude. By rendering and exhibiting desired roles and characteristics, they eventually hope for and actualize a better community, the liturgical community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If any portion of the Old Testament has come in for undeservedly scant attention, it has been the minor prophets. Their significance has been obscured by our neglect. Among the major messages of these prophets, that of Zechariah shines forth with special prominence. Zechariah's prophecy is given primarily to console and comfort weary Israel. The nation's initial enthusiasm for rebuilding the temple and resettling the land had waned. With growing opposition to the temple reconstruction, they had turned to the pursuit of their own affairs. Zechariah (along with Haggai) arduously seeks to bring Israel from their indifference to a complete spiritual return to the Lord. The prophet's pronouncement is of a coming day of unparalleled glory - a day when Messiah will rule the entire earth from Jerusalem. The book's major eschatological importance can be clearly seen for it reveals a wealth of information about Messiah and about the future and role of Israel during the important Day of Jehovah. The prophet provides this information for us in concise, epitomized form. In 'God Remembers,' Charles Feinberg brings a high level of scholarship to his study of this significant and exegetically difficult book. His familiarity with and love for the Old Testament can be readily seen in his thorough and readable exposition of the message of Zechariah. In addition to the main body of the commentary, 'God Remembers' includes an informative introduction, thorough scripture and subject indexes, and an annotated selected bibliography, further enhancing the usefulness of this important reference work.
