Despite the growing popularity of online learning in higher education, distance education often suffers from high dropout rates, which have been attributed to the physical separation of students. Such separation tends to give rise to feelings of isolation and disconnection. According to the literature, these feelings can be overcome by fostering a sense of community, that is a sense of belonging and interactivity among online learners. While a growing body of literature emphasizes the importance of fostering a community in online course communities, it is not clear how this is best accomplished. There is neither an accepted set of rules or strategies nor clearly defined steps in the development of a community in online course communities. In addition, the research on the effects of a community on learning is mixed. A few scholars criticize existing research for failing to demonstrate the role of community in learning through rigorous empirical studies. My research is concerned with this gap in the literature. So far, current research has made little progress in providing answers concerning the role of community. Findings from this study revealed that strong community levels were associated with instructor-facilitated online course communities, whereas weak community levels were associated with peer-facilitated online course communities. Students in the online course communities with stronger community levels, posted more notes, replied to more notes, and reread notes more often. They also spent more time revising the notes that they posted. Most interestingly, students in the online course communities with stronger community levels were more likely to link to and 'Like' their classmates' notes. Furthermore, unlike their peers from online course communities with weaker community levels, students from online course communities with stronger community levels believed that they learned more because they had access to their professor and their peers' ideas, and also expressed their enjoyment of the online course community discussions. It was also found that instructors from online course communities with stronger community levels were more hands-on than those from online course communities with weaker community levels. Considering these findings, I argue that fostering a sense of community in online course communities enhances social capital through the creation of relationships. This produces better student outcomes, deeper learning and more positive online learning experiences for students.

Book excerpt: In recent years there has been growing enthusiasm among researchers for the promotion of online learning communities designed to support professional learning in preservice teacher education. The primary purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the role of such an online community in supporting student teacher learning during the school placement in a Chinese Normal University, and hence to enrich the understanding of student teachers' learning experiences in an online ecology. The study's subjects included a cohort of 42 student teachers enrolled on a four-year preservice teacher education programme, along with two university supervisors at one of China's teacher-training universities. Primary data were collected from six weeks of online threaded discussions and from semi-structured group interviews. Supplementary data were taken from an end-of-school-placement evaluation and web-tracking logs. Data analysis has been informed and illuminated by the theoretical proposition of communities of practice. The findings of the study indicate that the online learning community is a valuable resource for supporting student teachers both personally and professionally. Findings suggest that online communication not only helps student teachers tackle immediate teaching concerns and technical problems, but, more importantly, provides them with opportunities to reflect collectively, to co-construct new teaching ideas, and to gain professional discourse competence through articulating and negotiating their evolving thoughts on teaching as a profession. In this regard, student teachers are found to be more comfortable with online self-disclosure of their personal and professional encounters and critiquing each other than they are with face-to-face communication. The research also shows that university supervisors experience mixed feelings about the fact that student teachers are more able to take ownership of their learning and therefore become less dependent on supervisor guidance as time wears on. Furthermore, these findings provide evidence suggestive of a possibly reciprocal relationship between Chinese view of learning and the building of online learning communities. Based on the results of the study, I provide recommendations as to how the significance of the school placement can be reinforced in fostering distributed student teachers' professional growth. The results also contribute to a better understanding of the key factors in the design and implementation of effective online learning communities within preservice teacher education in China. Finally, the analytical approach used in this study provides fresh methodological insight into an alternative means of analysing online postings. It thus contributes both to the theorisation of learning communities in the context of computer-mediated communication, and to the further development of concepts drawn from the communities of practice literature.

The purpose of this study was to explore a user-centered approach to developing an online learning community for a university program called preparing future faculty. Under the umbrella of Design-Based Research, this study was guided by Reflective Recursive Design and Development (R2D2) instructional design model and conducted through three phases. In Phase 1, after analyzing the student manual and existing course web site, a prototype online learning community was developed. In Phase 2, participants were actively involved in the design process. Six semi-structured interviews were conducted to understand students' social leaning context and their needs from PFF. By reflecting on their suggestions and opinions, solutions were discovered and applied in the online learning community development. In Phase 3, participants were invited to use the online learning community developed in Phase 2, and to provide suggestions for further development. The input from the students to the developer resulted in several specific features in the online learning community. To a great extent, the online learning community was about organizing content for students. Many participants suggested that this online learning community should be a central place for retrieving program related materials. According to these needs, archives were created for weekly announcements, speakers' information, handouts, and forms. All the PFF assignments were listed chronologically with specified due dates and instructions. Another key component in this online learning community was online discussion structured to respond to learners' needs for social conversation, information sharing, and providing course feedback. Results suggest the value of including the end users of an online learning community in the development process both in terms of specific suggestions for development and in terms of their ultimate ownership of the site.
