Book excerpt: Students who live in poverty are at a disadvantage when entering school, have a higher chance of reading below grade level, and often have high absenteeism rates. Some students who reside in poverty lack ongoing interactions with others where they can express themselves and increase their vocabulary. Many times, students who live in poverty are associated with single parent homes and a lack of resources. Parents are in survival mode; meaning parents must focus on paying the bills and keeping food on the table rather than being actively involved in their students’ education. Previous studies have provided information on how parental involvement, or lack thereof, can impact students’ reading achievement and attendance. Research has shown a connection between parental involvement, reading achievement, and attendance. The current study will explore the relationship between low-income parents’ perceptions of their school involvement and their students’ Lexile levels and attendance at a Title I middle school to ensure low-income students have the greatest chance of overcoming the implications of living in poverty. This study is unique because it investigates the perceptions of parents, rather than parent involvement as in previous studies. The researcher will use a Likert scale survey to survey low-income parents of students who attend Susie Dasher Middle School (pseudonym).

Book excerpt: Considerable literature on K-12 education has lauded parental engagement, suggesting that student academic success increases when parents are included in the educational process of their children. Yet research results suggest that low-income parents fail to engage in their children's academic life. Consequently, K-12 schools struggle with the question of how to effectively involve and engage low-income parent populations. The struggle for schools to engage low-income parents is due in part to the lack of research on the ways low-income parents engage in schools and the overreliance of traditional typologies of parental engagement that are heavily based on Epstein's Framework of Parental Involvement (1996). Through a case study of The LEAP Academy University Charter School in Camden, New Jersey, this study focuses on examining the ideas of Epstein to determine if they are valid in the case of an urban charter school serving low-income families. This qualitative study explores how low-income parents engage in the academic lives of their children, examines how the economic and social implications of traditional typologies of parental engagement affect engagement levels of low-income parents in public charter schools, and details innovative strategies used by a charter school to garner high levels of engagement from its low-income parent population. Using literature on parental engagement, school reform, and theories of social capital, the study examines the creation of social capital in the form of education-related social networks among the LEAP Academy low-income parent population. This inquiry seeks to provide new findings and policy implications for schools that struggle with engaging their low-income parent populations, underscores a need for the augmentation of traditional definitions of parental engagement, provides evidence for the role community-based urban schools can play in the community development process, and identifies suggestions for future research.

Book excerpt: This study examined the relation between low-income parents' educational involvement, measured as a composite of home- and school-based activities, and children's reading skills in first grade. Class size, amount of reading instruction, and teacher self-efficacy were also examined as predictors of children's reading skills as well as moderators of the relation between parents' educational involvement and children's reading skills. Parents' educational involvement predicted children's reading skills; however, none of the three classroom variables did. Although neither class size nor teacher self-efficacy moderated the relation between parents' educational involvement and children's reading skills, the amount of classroom reading instruction did. The relation between parents' educational involvement and children's reading skills was stronger for children who received fewer than 2 hours of classroom reading instruction a day. The results of this study underscore the need to consider both home and school contexts when examining the reading skills of children from low-income households.

Researchers argue that the lack of equal educational opportunities and the denial of basic human liberties have contributed to the achievement gap (Levine & Levine, 2014; Lindsay, 2011). Although case law has provided African Americans more comprehensive, equal educational opportunities and legalized their civil rights, the achievement gap persists. Parental involvement is a possible solution to address the gap given its positive impacts which include higher student academic achievement and less disruptive behaviors (Epstein 2007; Gonida & Cortina, 2014; Hill & Tyson, 2009; LeBel, Chafouleas, Britner, & Simonsen, 2013; Myers & Myers, 2015). Positive school culture has also been found to increase student achievement and is linked to less bullying among students. Although the literature does detail the positive effects of parental involvement and positive school culture, research relating the relationships between and among involvement, school culture, ethnicity, and barriers to involvement is limited. The primary purpose of this quantitative survey study was to determine if parents' perceptions of school culture were associated with their levels of involvement. Other purposes of this study were to determine if parent ethnicity was associated with their levels of parental involvement or self-reported barriers to involvement. The theoretical framework for this study was Epstein's (2001; 2010) model of parental involvement which details specific types of involvement: parenting, communication, volunteering, and learning in the home. Through statistical analysis, this study determined that parents' perceptions of school culture were associated with overall parental involvement, communication, learning at home. Although differences in the levels of parental involvement were observed, the parent education level variable accounted for this difference, not parent ethnicity. Conversely, the ethnicity variable was significant in accounting for the differences observed among ethnicity groups related to the number of self-reported barriers to involvement. In view of these findings, this researcher's conclusions, recommendations for practice, and suggestions for future research are included in this report.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to gain insight into low-income parents' perceptions of literacy practices at home and at school in order to build on the existing literature and create more relevant literacy experiences for children living in poverty. This research is based on the theory that a "mismatch" between low-income children's home and school experiences makes it difficult for them to connect the ideas learned in each environment. In an attempt to build bridges that make the home and school environments of low-income children more congruent, data were gathered through in-depth interviews. These interviews provided insight into Head Start parents' perceptions of literacy, their role in literacy, and the school's role in literacy. These findings were then compared to a companion study that examined the teachers' perceptions of literacy in the classroom and at home. From these findings, implications for practice were created based on the reports from the parents and teachers, as well as suggestions for developing collaborative relationships between teachers and parents.

Book excerpt: This study examines the relationship between parenting behaviors and the effect of these behaviors on their children's academic self-efficacy. Six hypotheses were developed to test the relationship of six parenting variables to the child's self-efficacy. The sample included 58 low-income minority students and one parent figure for each child. Results determined that of the six hypotheses tested, two showed a marginally significant correlation. The two hypotheses that received modest support were: 1. Higher levels of parent's expectations about educational attainment are positively related to the child's self-efficacy and, 2. Affection is positively related to the child's self-efficacy. The six parenting variables were then compared to each other. Our results indicated that there were three variables that were significantly related. They are (a) the relationship between parent frequency of interaction with their child and the parent involvement with their child about school-related matters, (b) the relationship between the parent involvement with their child about school-related matters and the parent's direct involvement at their child's school, and (c) the relationship between the amount of affection the parent shows to the child and the parent's direct involvement with the school. The six parent variables were correlated with the eight subscales of academic self-efficacy. Three significant relationships were found between these variables. 1. The relationship between parent interaction with their child and their child's ability to enlist parental and social resources. 2. The relationship between parent's show of affection to their child and the child's self assertiveness. 3. The relationship between the parent's educational expectations for their child and the child's ability to meet other's expectations.

Book excerpt: The academic achievement gap continues to be a critical issue in the education of minority and economically disadvantaged students (Bemak, Chung, & Siroskey-Sabdo, 2005; College Board, 1999; Flores, 2007; Yaffe & Educational Testing Service, 2011). Due to an increase in poverty in the U.S., many more students are more likely to experience an education that is characterized by the academic achievement gap. In comparison to students from higher-income backgrounds, students from low-income backgrounds are more likely to fall behind in various areas of academic achievement. The lower levels of academic achievement among low-income students often result from the lack of access to adequately resourced schools and equal opportunities to learn (Flores, 2007). The ability for low-income middle school students to be academically successful despite their educationally disadvantaged environments has been attributed to many individually-based factors (Elliott, DiPerna, Mroch, & Lang, 2004). However, current research has found that parental involvement and perceptions play a key role in determining academic achievement for low-income students (McCoach et al., 2010). Many parents are aware that they play a role in their child's academic success. However, some parents are often unsure of the specific things they can do to support their child's academic success (West-Olatunji, Sanders, Mehta, & Behar-Horenstein, 2010). Therefore, it is important to help parents in low-income families understand how their involvement plays a vital role in promoting the academic achievement of their students. A workshop was created that focused on parental involvement as an environmental factor that promotes academic achievement in low-income students. The researcher collected evaluations on each day of the workshop. The aim of the evaluations was to provide the researcher with feedback on the effectiveness of various aspects of the workshop. The evaluation consisted of checklist, Likert-Scale, and open-ended questions. Analysis of the evaluation results allowed the researcher to determine workshop effectiveness. After completion of the two workshops, findings showed that the workshop effectively provided low-income parents with research-based involvement practices shown to support academic success and help reduce the academic achievement gap for low-income middle school students. The information gained from this workshop will help low-income parents know how to be more involved in the academic achievement of their student. Additionally, the effective design of this workshop will be useful in the planning of future parental involvement workshops.

Book excerpt: Behavioral engagement at school has been cited as an avenue for improving low academic performance and decreasing boredom and disaffection among students and dropout rate. What we don't know is how dimensions of parent involvement and students' perceived academic competence contribute to behavioral engagement at school. Specifically, the present study contributed to the limited research on the mechanisms responsible for the influences of the aforementioned variables on students' academic related outcomes. Participants consisted of a sample of 637 elementary students from a larger sample of 784 academically at-risk and ethnically and linguistically diverse first grade students recruited from three school districts (i.e., two rural and one urban) for a longitudinal study focused on the impact of grade retention on academic achievement. Participants' behavioral engagement, parent school-based involvement, and parents' perceptions about the school were rated by their teachers and parents. Three separate Structural Equation Model (SEM) analyses were conducted, one for each dimension of parent involvement. Results suggest that perceived academic competence does not mediate the relationship between these dimensions of parent involvement and behavioral engagement. However, there were expected within-wave associations between study variables, further supporting concurrent relationships between dimensions of parent involvement, academic competence, and behavioral engagement. Findings have implications for researching more indirect forms of parent involvement and their impact on children's academic competence and behavioral engagement. Book excerpt: Of Bees and Mist is a fable that chronicles three generations of women under one family tree over a period of thirty years-their galvanic love and passion, their shifting alliances, their superstitions and complex domestic politics-and places them in a mythical town where spirits and spells, witchcraft and demons, and prophets and clairvoyance are an everyday reality. -- Publisher's description.
