Book excerpt: Completion of a baccalaureate degree is positively associated with economic independence and upward mobility in an increasingly competitive world. Student success, through persistence to graduation, is a central goal for institutions of higher education, but only a fraction of students who begin college will graduate with a degree. Despite decades of exploration, student retention hovers at a consistent percentage, leaving the goal of degree completion unattained for many college students. Research shows college retention and degree completion vary across different sociodemographic characteristics such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and first-generation status. Research also indicates student engagement in educationally purposeful activity, both inside and outside of the classroom, increases the likelihood of student success across sociodemographic lines. Foundational theory as well as historic and contemporary research provides promising direction for higher education faculty, staff, and administrators to create institution specific plans to increase the chances of student success by increasing student retention in college through improved student engagement (Kinzie & Kuh, 2004). The present study seeks to explore the relationship between college student engagement, socioeconomic status, and persistence. National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) data is used to measure student engagement behaviors among first year college students at a small public residential university in the upper-Midwest. Parent income is used to define socioeconomic status and is matched with student engagement scores defined by the NSSE. Institutional data is used to determine the persistence behaviors of the students participating in this study. Results indicate a small positive relationship between student engagement and persistence suggesting high levels of student engagement increases the likelihood of persistence. No relationship is found between parent income and persistence or parent income and student engagement, suggesting parent income alone may not sufficiently explain socioeconomic differences in student engagement and persistence. Exploring these relationships assist faculty, staff, and administrators develop specific interventions to increase student engagement in experiences shown to improve the likelihood of persistence to degree completion.

However, their retention rates are dismal and have remained stagnant for more than 30 years. The low retention rates have serious implications for community colleges and the community at large. Low retention rates impact such things as individual health and well-being as well as funding for colleges to operate. As such, this correlational study was designed to understand the relationship between student engagement and specific student characteristics and persistence in college. The specific student engagement variables examined were student-faculty interaction, college GPA, academic self-efficacy, late registration, and sense of belonging. Moderation and mediation analysis examined the effects of race, first-generation status, and high school GPA. Data from the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) that was administered at Tidewater Community College (TCC) was used for the analysis. The analysis revealed that high school GPA and student-faculty interaction are positively related to college GPA. Additionally, it found student-faculty interaction to be positively related to persistence. None of the moderation and mediation hypotheses were supported in the study. Given some of the issues found with the research design used for this study, it was recommended that future research consider conducting focus groups or interviews to study persistence instead of using archival data.

Book excerpt: Estimating the persistence of first-time students from the first year to the second year of college is a growing social and financial concern for postsecondary education. Studying how socioeconomic status affects year-to-year persistence may help to identify and assist those students who had socioeconomic profiles most likely to indicate challenges to year-to-year persistence. This study used data from the Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:96/98). BPS is a nationally representative survey designed to provide additional information about the patterns of educational attainment and persistence for a subset of the more than 51,000 students included in the NPSAS:96 survey. This study used all students enrolled as first-time beginning students at two-year and four-year institutions. The purpose of this study was to develop and test a theoretical framework to describe the year-to-year persistence of beginning postsecondary education students at both two-year and four-year institutions. The preliminary model included 39 literature-based variables coded and grouped into seven factors: background, high school, college-entry, financial, social integration, academic integration, and college performance. The data were tested using descriptive statistics and logistic regression to determine the correct predictive percentage of the models for first-generation and continuing-generation students, only first-generation students, and only continuing-generation students at both two-year and four-year institutions. The tested models can be used as a method to identify students who may struggle with persistence decisions. Identification of students in need may help postsecondary educators to provide services and interventions that will facilitate the year-to-year persistence of these students. This model could be easily adapted to a specific institution, and the validity of the model assessed longitudinally with year-to-year persistence of the students. Social capital variables, particularly student integration to the collegiate environment, are strongly associated with persistence of first generation students at both types of institutions. Contact between the student and faculty member outside of the classroom environment is critical to the persistence of students. The student must match with the social and academic environment of the campus.

It also explored the relationship between student engagement as measured by the five benchmarks (Academic Challenge, Active & Collaborative Learning, Student Faculty Interaction, Enriching Education Experience, and Supportive Campus Environment) and student persistence. Finally, it explored relationships among institutional expenditures, student engagement and student persistence. The study is a non experimental quantitative study utilizing two data sources, NSSE 2005 survey data and IPEDS data source. The study utilized data from 71 public Research Institutions Extensive and Intensive on the 2000 Carnegie Classification of institutions. The findings showed that institutional expenditures on academic support are positively significantly related to persistence. Institutional expenditures on student services are also positively significantly related to persistence. The variance in persistence attributed to difference in total academic support is higher than that attributed to by student services. Likewise, the variance attributed to student support total amount is higher than variance attributed to by student support per student FTE. Examination of the relationship between Student Engagement and Retention showed that four of the student engagement benchmarks were significant. Academic Challenge was not significant. Active and Collaborative Learning and Student Faculty Interaction were significant but both had negative coefficients. Results also showed that there were significant relationships among institutional expenditures, student engagement and persistence through partial mediation in the structural equation model. One benchmark in the model, Student Faculty Interaction was however not significant.

Book excerpt: The present study investigated the impact of levels of student engagement on retention among first-year, full-time students at a south central Kentucky university, by examining the self-reported levels of engagement as described on the Spring 2005 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). In addition, the study measured the predictive value of the multidimensional patterns of student engagement relative to student retention from the first- to second-year, based on the NSSE participants' subsequent enrollment in the Fall 2005. The study also examined the relationship among students' demographic and personal achievement characteristics and levels of student engagement that influence persistence and dropout decisions. An analysis of both past and current literature concerning retention issues revealed that persistence in higher education is a longitudinal process involving more than students' cognitive ability to succeed academically. The present study employed a cross-sectional, correlation design in which a two-group, simultaneous, discriminant analyses were used to address the research questions. Data used for this study were gathered via cross-sectional design from first-year students who enrolled in the fall 2004 semester at Western Kentucky University. The survey was administered toward the end of the spring 2005 semester. Only those students who persisted from the fall 2004 semester to spring 2005 semester participated in the survey. Information sought concerned demographic characteristics, student engagement behaviors, and other variables thought to influence student persistence. Sample participants who persisted were identified though Fall 2005 enrollment records. Results from the present study indicated that academic achievement is a far greater predictor of persistence than student engagement. In addition, the data obtained from this study might also indicate that Spady (1970) and Tinto's (1975) stance that demographic and academic achievement characteristics are the foundation of the longitudinal process of persistence might be key to predicting persistence, particularly among first-year students. In short, while social integration and student engagement are important, academic achievement and preparedness are critical to both social integration and persistence. In other words, while student engagement may be an important factor in persistence in higher education, the basis for success in higher education is academic preparedness. Further investigations of the effects of remedial education on persistence are necessary to determine if this approach actually increases persistence.

This study sought to understand whether or not student academic and social experiences in college are related to post-baccalaureate early career earnings. The literature review explored human and social capital theories, related student development theories, and the economics of education as it relates to the earnings premium of postsecondary education. The study analyzed student data and explored the relationship between student experiences in college and subsequent employment status and early career earnings. The overall engagement measure dramatically increased the likelihood a student was employed within 6 months of graduation and was also positively related to early career earnings. Of the student engagement subscales, leadership and campus involvement and community service and philanthropy increased the likelihood a student was employed within 6 months of graduation. The leadership and campus involvement measure was also positively related to early career earnings in the full model, as well as in many of the conditional models for different student subpopulations. The international and global learning measure and the research and academic endeavors measure both had a negative relationship with the natural log of wages in the overall model and in many of the conditional models, plausibly due to increased engagement of students who may have been more inclined to enter into public service, social services, or the non-profit sector. Regarding the moderating relationships, the results suggested that the research and academic endeavors measure was more important to early career earnings for males than females, while the overall engagement measure and the community service and philanthropy measure were less important for STEM majors compared to non-STEM majors.

Book excerpt: Despite decades of research and program implementation in both the K-12 and higher educational systems, students of low socio-economic status (SES) still have access to and persist in higher education at significantly lower numbers than their more affluent peers (Gollnick & Chinn, 2012; Perna, 2005). This study employed a grounded-theory approach in order to better understand why this gap between lower- and higher-SES college students continues to persist, despite such efforts. In addition, this study adds another dimension to the grounded-theory data analysis process called Theoretical Matching, as recommended by Goldkuhl and Cronholm (2010). Two theoretical lenses were used to narrow the research focus: Bourdieu's Cultural Capital Theory (1977) and Tierney's Model of Cultural Integrity (1999). In addition, Tinto's Model of College Drop-Out (1975) was also used to inform the emerging theory. The theory that emerged: Knaggs' Intra- and Extra-Institutional Integration Model of Persistence for Low-SES College Students, describes the process of integration both within the institution, and in the adult world outside of the university. Recommendations to institutions based on Knaggs' theory include creating an environment that better validates the culture of all students, therefore increasing the likelihood that cultural integrity is possible. In addition, models of college-preparatory programs and full-service community K-12 schools are used to show higher education institutions how they might better help students, particularly those of low-SES, to integrate successfully into the Extra-Institutional Environment as a financially-independent adult.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Factors contributing to student persistence are important topics to investigate to minimize wasted finances, time, and effort by both students and institutions (Chen & St. John, 2011; Cornacchione & Daugherty, 2013; Jobe & Lenio, 2014). This quantitative study examined how some factors (i.e., academic and social integration, goal and institutional commitment) contribute to a student's intent to persist academically. For the study, a guiding theoretical framework was developed based on Tinto's (1975) theory of student departure and Ajzen's (1991) theory of planned behavior. Utilizing two quantitative, self-reporting survey instruments administered simultaneously, a convenience sample (N = 405) of undergraduate students representing two data collection sites, a regional comprehensive state university and a primarily two-year state college, within the southeast region of the United States, provided data during the Fall 2016 semester.
