Book excerpt: When The Flying Cow was first published in 1975, it revealed a world of psychic wonders in Brazil hitherto barely explored by outsiders. Author Guy Lyon Playfair had spent two years as a member of the Brazilian Institute for Psychobiophysical Research (IBPP), the first group of its kind to investigate and document the wide range of inexplicable phenomena - from poltergeists and psychic surgeons to trance artists and children who recall previous lives. He spent several days and nights in a poltergeist-haunted house, managing to record several inexplicable happenings on tape. He watched as a young man untrained in art dashed off a series of portraits in the styles of numerous deceased masters, some in a matter of seconds. He witnessed some of the country's unorthodox healers at work, and saw them open bodies with their bare hands, eventually finding out for himself how it feels to be on the receiving end of this most bizarre form of alternative surgery. He also looked into some of the best known cases from the past, collecting new eye-witness evidence for the mysterious abilities of such legendary figures as Arigo, the 'surgeon of the rusty knife', colourful and controversial mediums such as Carlos Mirabelli, Peixotinho and Otilia Diogo. He even obtained an account of the rarest of all psychic phenomena - materialisation - from a chief of police. The Flying Cow was followed by its sequel The Indefinite Boundary in 1976. Material from the latter has been included in this edition, making it the most comprehensive survey available of the paranormal world of Brazil. The author gave up a secure and lucrative career as freelance journalist and translator to explore that world, and in this book, fully revised and updated, he describes what he found there. Much of it is as surprising today as it was when it was first published.

Book excerpt: The authors begin with compelling evidence of psychic abilities gathered in Targ's remote-viewing experiments for the Stanford Research Institute. Targ reveals how the experiments were conducted and how subjects were able to describe remote locations with precise detail. Targ also presents the results of recently declassified, covertly funded CIA experiments in remote spying during the Cold War, published here for the first time. After surveying the scientific evidence of the mind's nonlocal powers, Targ and Katra apply this evidence to the field of healing. Incorporating ancient Eastern teachings and modern scientific evidence published in the most prestigious scientific journals, Targ and Katra explain the process of spiritual healing, which they describe as a quieting of the mind to open it to the community of spirit. The book stays with you long after you put it down. It can change the way you view the world — and yourself.

Book excerpt: This book takes a deeper look into the darker side of the human condition by examining the psyches of those who have been victims or survivors of heinous acts perpetrated by others. From the "personal Holocaust" of sexual abuse in the family, to the genocidal persecution during "the" Holocaust, and from the shared national horror of September 11 to the Palestinian/Israeli situation, a special model of the traumatized mind is evolved to further our understanding of such "dark matters". The traditional models of the mind fall short when dealing with extraordinary people under ordinary conditions as well as with ordinary people under extraordinary conditions. This metapsychology is organized around the defensive operations of repression or splitting. In the model proposed here, defensive altered states of consciousness, or dissociation seems more helpful. A historical perspective is offered, from Freud and Breuer, with their Studies on Hysteria, to current thinking about dissociative disorders. A developmental line of dissociation is also explored.

Book excerpt: The definitive history of the military's decades-long investigation into mental powers and phenomena, from the author of Pulitzer Prize finalist The Pentagon's Brain and international bestseller Area 51. This is a book about a team of scientists and psychics with top secret clearances. For more than forty years, the U.S. government has researched extrasensory perception, using it in attempts to locate hostages, fugitives, secret bases, and downed fighter jets, to divine other nations' secrets, and even to predict future threats to national security. The intelligence agencies and military services involved include CIA, DIA, NSA, DEA, the Navy, Air Force, and Army-and even the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Now, for the first time, New York Times bestselling author Annie Jacobsen tells the story of these radical, controversial programs, using never before seen declassified documents as well as exclusive interviews with, and unprecedented access to, more than fifty of the individuals involved. Speaking on the record, many for the first time, are former CIA and Defense Department scientists, analysts, and program managers, as well as the government psychics themselves. Who did the U.S. government hire for these top secret programs, and how do they explain their military and intelligence work? How do scientists approach such enigmatic subject matter? What interested the government in these supposed powers and does the research continue? Phenomena is a riveting investigation into how far governments will go in the name of national security.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A journalistic quest that begins with the couldn't-be-more-personal experience of her own psychic surgery, Bryan takes the reader from The Faith in God Spiritual Church outside Reno, Nevada to the Pangasinan Province of the Philippines Island of Luzon, famous for its healers who perform surgery without cutting open the body - bare-handed surgery, where no anesthesia is used, and there is no pain, scars, or infection. Even as quantum physicists close in on a scientific description of how it works, Bryan asks: "Is psychic healing a miracle of God or a trickery of fake blood and cotton balls perpetrated by charlatans?" She goes on to explore how it might well be both. This is an open, honest, in-depth look at the multiple, often contradictory realities of faith healing and the ripples it casts into the realms of physics, metaphysics, spirituality, and higher consciousness. Into this heartfelt first person account of a life-changing journey from patient to student to sometimes teacher, Bryan weaves a parallel narrative full of historical detail and cultural perspective on telekinesis, the magnetic force of cells, trance mediums, miracles, the placebo effect, and the power of expectation, as well as minor and major deities on the order of John of God, Franz Mesmer, Emanuel Swedenborg, Albert Einstein, and Shirley MacLaine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psychic Spy tells the story of Eileen Evans, a beautiful young woman and talented psychic who is unwittingly recruited by MI6 to join their new top secret Remote Viewing program during the heart of the Cold War in the 1970's and 80's. Eileen quickly finds herself embroiled in excitement and danger as she quickly becomes a "psychic spy" for British Intelligence. Finding forbidden love with another agent, Eileen descends into a dark world filled with political intrigue, danger and death. Not only must she cope with the possibility of losing her life, she must also struggle with the very real threat of losing her soul. Smart, sexy and filled with humor and peril, The Psychic Spy is a thrilling adventure that explores a little-known but very real world where governments use actual psychics to spy on their enemies, and in some cases, even their allies! Using her own real-life experiences as a remote viewer, Irene Allen-Block has created a powerful tale that should entertain and educate readers on a piece of history that has been hidden in the shadows. Nick Redfern, author of "The Real Men In Black" says that The Psychic Spy is "filled with adventure, intrigue and shadowy characters. As Irene Allen-Block skillfully shows, the mind is a mysterious and dangerous tool."
