Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the life experiences (personal and educational) of eight distinguished elementary Catholic school principals formally recognized by NCEA through its Distinguished Principal Award. The study sought to identify their leadership practices and how they were demonstrated in their roles as educational leaders, spiritual leaders, and managerial leaders. Additionally, this study sought to identify the major 21st century challenges that the eight NCEA- Identified Distinguished Catholic Elementary School Principals faced and how they addressed them. This case study included eight participants from eight different (arch)dioceses over seven states. Each principal participant completed an initial questionnaire and responded to interview questions about their spiritual, instructional, and managerial leadership practices as well as the 21st century challenges they face and how they address them. Additional data was gathered from faculty focus group interviews. Data from initial questionnaires and principal and faculty focus group interviews was analyzed to identify the effective leadership practices of the NCEA- Identified Distinguished Catholic Elementary School Principals. Effective instructional leadership practices identified include engaging in lifelong learning, providing teachers with necessary resources and professional development, providing students with necessary materials, maintaining budgets, evaluating instruction through formal and informal observations, and analyzing data. Effective spiritual leadership practices identified include modeling, being visible in the faith community, building the faith community through prayer and shared Catholic traditions and experiences, and providing ongoing catechist training. Effective managerial leadership practices identified include delegating tasks, creating goals, holding regular meetings, reviewing finances, establishing Administrative Teams, adhering to deadlines and policies, holding regular safety drills, and upholding safety plans. The study revealed that the role of the Catholic elementary school principal is exhausting and never-ending and that there is a need to continue to explore effective Catholic elementary school leadership practices while also evaluating the current structure of and expectations placed on the Catholic elementary school principal. Further research on the importance of the pastor/principal role to Catholic elementary school success and how this relationship can be fostered were recommended. Additional recommendations were made to better identify necessary spiritual leadership practices.

Book excerpt: This study explored the predictive nature of the relationship between lay Catholic elementary school principals' professional experiences in Catholic and public schools, demographic information, school demographics, religious formation, and spirituality on the frequency of their spiritual leadership behaviors. Spiritual leadership was conceptualized using Ciriello's (1994) spiritual leadership framework and the behaviors of spiritual leadership were more fully defined using Catholic Church writings and Catholic educational research that describes the responsibilities of spiritual leadership (Barry and Brennan, 2008, Belmonte and Cranston, 2009; Campbell, 2000; Cook, 2001; Curran, 1996; Helm, 1989; Jacobs, 1996, McDermott, 1997; Miller, 2006; Muccigrosso, 1994, Robinson and Cirello, 1994a, 1994b, 1994c, 1994d). Data for this national study came from anonymous surveys responded to by 253 lay Catholic elementary school principals. Principals were invited to participate using a purposeful representative sampling to ensure inclusion of principals from the eight regions represented on National Catholic Educational Association's board. The Catholic Elementary School Principals' Spiritual Leadership Survey (CESPSL) used in this study was developed by the researcher. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Q-Q plots, a series of one-way, between-subjects analysis of variance (ANOVA), linear regression and stepwise regression analyses. The results of these analyses revealed no significant correlation between the combined years of experience a lay Catholic school principal has in Catholic schools, as a teacher and principal, and the frequency of their spiritual leadership behaviors. However, Catholic school experience was found to be predictive of the frequency of principal's spiritual leadership behaviors when their experience in Catholic schools was limited to only those years they served as a principal in their current Catholic school. This study did not find any correlation between the combined years of experience a principal had in public schools prior to their employment as a Catholic elementary school principal and the frequency of their spiritual leadership behaviors. This study did find nine demographic, religious formation and spirituality factors that were predictive of the frequency of lay Catholic elementary school principals' spiritual leadership behaviors. These factors include: the principal's age, catechetical certification, ongoing adult religious education, participation in Church Sacraments, support for Catholic Church teachings, participation in the cultural life of a Catholic parish, feeling close to God, daily prayer, and the practice of reflection and contemplation. It is hoped that the results of this study provide diocesan leaders and Catholic colleges and universities with a better understanding of the combination of factors that are correlated with the frequency of principals' spiritual leadership behaviors and that this understanding will help inform decisions that are made regarding the preparation, hiring and ongoing formation of lay Catholic elementary schools principals as spiritual leaders. Recommendations for future research suggest new ways to gain additional insights into the complex relationship between the lay Catholic school principal's professional school experiences, demographic information, religious formation, and spirituality factors and the frequency of their spiritual leadership behaviors as Catholic elementary school principals.

The purpose of this study was to discover and examine perceptions about leadership in experienced Catholic Elementary School Principals. Specifically, I sought to explore and uncover the strategies and techniques of experienced educational leaders in sustaining their vocations as Catholic leaders. In line with this objective, two research questions guided the study. The first research question asked: What leadership strategies are employed by experienced Catholic school elementary principals to sustain themselves as effective leaders? Meanwhile, the second research question that followed was: What practices do experienced Catholic school elementary principals use to prevent their burnout? To address the purpose of the study and research questions, I interviewed 18 Catholic school elementary principals with at least 10 years of experience. I then performed a content analysis to search for and produce the most common but meaningful themes across the 18 interviews collected. From the analysis, I found that the leadership strategies focused on: motivation, unity in Catholic faith, adaptability, building relationships, and optimism. Further, in response to the practices used to prevent burnout, I uncovered that work-life balance (including their ability to find time for their hobbies and to connect with their religious beliefs and faith practices) and networking and connecting were the most important for the interviewed educational leaders. I was also able to successfully connect these themes to the theoretical frameworks of Emotional Intelligence or EI, transformational leadership, servant leadership, and educational leadership.

This study is design to answer the following research question: How do Principals' and Assistant Principals' experiences within or outside faith-based education inform the advancement of the mission of Catholic schools? The study utilized a qualitative research design to gather the perspectives of the participants. Data was collected in two ways. First, in depth semi structured interviews were conducted to identify the individual factors that were vital to answering the research question. Second, a Focus Group session was conducted to garner a communal sense of the future of Catholic schools. The findings reveled that three themes were essential for school administrators when considering the advancement of the mission of Catholic schools. First, Spiritual Capital was identified a vital attribute of Catholic school leaders. Second, Communities of Practice was defined as a critical resource to Catholic school administrators due to the lack of formal structures in place to guide school leaders. Third, Connected to the Mission was identified as the link between the findings that tied all components together to provide support to the Catholic school administrator. The findings prove vital by extending the research on Catholic school leadership and providing decision makers within Catholic schools information that will assist in the hiring process of potential Catholic school leaders.
