However, the statistics reveal disparities within current minority mental health research and literature due to the lack of information concerning this growing population. As an art therapy intern at a Chinese community center, I seek ways in which art therapy can provide therapeutic benefits through activity programming. I discuss how art therapy may be adapted to this culture in order to be both relevant and meaningful for this elderly Chinese community. Through my observations and experiences at this site, I have found that using a client-centered approach and focusing on the art process may be useful in providing therapy without added stigma surrounding mental health awareness. In the future, art therapists working with Chinese immigrant populations may wish to contribute to the research and literature as well, in order to raise awareness about minority health needs in the larger mental health community.

Book excerpt: China is a rapidly aging society. In 2018, China’s population of 60 year-olds reached 249 million, at 17.88% of the total population. This percentage rose to 18.13% in 2019. The senior population was not the only rising number. Nursing homes, as places that provide senior residential accommodation and medical care, also demonstrated a drastic increase in its number. While most nursing homes offer their clients traditional medical care, some of them bring additional treatments to the senior community. Art therapy programs as a complementary treatment have been implemented in some nursing homes to bring music or paintings to the seniors with the intention to help alleviate pain and create meaningful experiences in participants' lives. However, art therapy programs are not popularized and they mostly exist in high end, private nursing homes. The number of art therapy programs in other nursing homes is small. In this thesis, I will explore the current situation of Chinese nursing homes and the situation of art therapy programs in general, to understand what has been achieved and the obstacles art therapy programs are facing. Firstly, I will introduce the social background of China’s elder care to contextualize my research. Next, I will explore the state of art therapy in China, including its origin, development and application, and the importance of offering art therapy to seniors. A further exploration on how art therapy programs work as complementary treatments to help seniors in private nursing homes will be presented through case studies. I will also examine what stops Chinese nursing from homes bringing art therapy programs into their structure. Then, my focus will shift to social institutions that offer art therapy programs to the senior community, to analyze how they function in order to determine if knowledge transfers might be considered . Finally, I will attempt to find a path to facilitate collaboration between art therapy organizations and nursing homes, to more effectively offer programs to seniors.

During my studies in the United States, I acculturated voluntarily and involuntarily. During this acculturation process, I found my passion and decided to pursue a career in the field of art therapy back home in mainland China. I want to introduce this counseling approach to Chinese people so that they can benefit from this creative process. With the outbreak of Covid-19, I had an opportunity to return home and secure internships in two CCRCs (Continuing Care Retirement Center) within the Taikang System: Taikang Community Daqinggu, and Taikang Community Shen Garden. I worked with Chinese older adults, and individuals with cognitive impairments. During this experience, I found that I needed to re-acculturate to my birth culture to best provide art therapy services. This process of acculturation and re-acculturation affected my cultural identity and the way I understand and practice art therapy. This project explores my acculturation and re-acculturation process as a western-trained emerging art therapist. I use art therapy research and autoethnography to reflect upon my experiences during this inquiry.
