Download or read book Street Data written by Shane Safir and published by Corwin. This book was released on 2021-02-12 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radically reimagine our ways of being, learning, and doing Education can be transformed if we eradicate our fixation on big data like standardized test scores as the supreme measure of equity and learning. Instead of the focus being on "fixing" and "filling" academic gaps, we must envision and rebuild the system from the student up—with classrooms, schools and systems built around students’ brilliance, cultural wealth, and intellectual potential. Street data reminds us that what is measurable is not the same as what is valuable and that data can be humanizing, liberatory and healing. By breaking down street data fundamentals: what it is, how to gather it, and how it can complement other forms of data to guide a school or district’s equity journey, Safir and Dugan offer an actionable framework for school transformation. Written for educators and policymakers, this book · Offers fresh ideas and innovative tools to apply immediately · Provides an asset-based model to help educators look for what’s right in our students and communities instead of seeking what’s wrong · Explores a different application of data, from its capacity to help us diagnose root causes of inequity, to its potential to transform learning, and its power to reshape adult culture Now is the time to take an antiracist stance, interrogate our assumptions about knowledge, measurement, and what really matters when it comes to educating young people.

Book Synopsis A Framework for K-12 Science Education by : National Research Council
Download or read book A Framework for K-12 Science Education written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-02-28 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science, engineering, and technology permeate nearly every facet of modern life and hold the key to solving many of humanity's most pressing current and future challenges. The United States' position in the global economy is declining, in part because U.S. workers lack fundamental knowledge in these fields. To address the critical issues of U.S. competitiveness and to better prepare the workforce, A Framework for K-12 Science Education proposes a new approach to K-12 science education that will capture students' interest and provide them with the necessary foundational knowledge in the field. A Framework for K-12 Science Education outlines a broad set of expectations for students in science and engineering in grades K-12. These expectations will inform the development of new standards for K-12 science education and, subsequently, revisions to curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development for educators. This book identifies three dimensions that convey the core ideas and practices around which science and engineering education in these grades should be built. These three dimensions are: crosscutting concepts that unify the study of science through their common application across science and engineering; scientific and engineering practices; and disciplinary core ideas in the physical sciences, life sciences, and earth and space sciences and for engineering, technology, and the applications of science. The overarching goal is for all high school graduates to have sufficient knowledge of science and engineering to engage in public discussions on science-related issues, be careful consumers of scientific and technical information, and enter the careers of their choice. A Framework for K-12 Science Education is the first step in a process that can inform state-level decisions and achieve a research-grounded basis for improving science instruction and learning across the country. The book will guide standards developers, teachers, curriculum designers, assessment developers, state and district science administrators, and educators who teach science in informal environments.

Book Synopsis Exploring Science Through Science Fiction by : Barry B. Luokkala
Download or read book Exploring Science Through Science Fiction written by Barry B. Luokkala and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material in this book forms the basis of an interdisciplinary, college-level course, which uses science fiction film as a vehicle for exploring science concepts. Unlike traditional introductory-level courses, the science content is arranged according to major themes in science fiction, with a deliberate progression from the highly objective and discipline-specific (e.g. Reference Frames; Physics of Space Travel and Time Travel) to the very multi-disciplinary and thought-provoking (e.g. Human Teleportation; Science and Society). Over 100 references to science fiction films and television episodes are included, spanning more than 100 years of cinematic history. Some of these are conducive to calculations (solutions included).

Book Synopsis Inquiry-based Science Education by : Robyn M. Gillies
Download or read book Inquiry-based Science Education written by Robyn M. Gillies and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-01-24 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students often think of science as disconnected pieces of information rather than a narrative that challenges their thinking, requires them to develop evidence-based explanations for the phenomena under investigation, and communicate their ideas in discipline-specific language as to why certain solutions to a problem work. The author provides teachers in primary and junior secondary school with different evidence-based strategies they can use to teach inquiry science in their classrooms. The research and theoretical perspectives that underpin the strategies are discussed as are examples of how different ones areimplemented in science classrooms to affect student engagement and learning. Key Features: Presents processes involved in teaching inquiry-based science Discusses importance of multi-modal representations in teaching inquiry based-science Covers ways to develop scientifically literacy Uses the Structure of Observed learning Outcomes (SOLO) Taxonomy to assess student reasoning, problem-solving and learning Presents ways to promote scientific discourse, including teacher-student interactions, student-student interactions, and meta-cognitive thinking

Book Synopsis Universal Design for Learning Science by : Deborah Hanuscin
Download or read book Universal Design for Learning Science written by Deborah Hanuscin and published by National Science Teachers Association. This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is the result of more than a decade of work with teachers through the Quality Elementary Science Teaching professional development program. We used two frameworks that come together in powerful ways to support student learning in science -- the 5E Learning Cycle and Universal Design for Learning. Using these frameworks encourages teachers to rethink how they have typically approached lessons and to reframe them in ways that mirror how students learn, that provide depth and conceptual coherence, and that support the success of all learners. Implementing these frameworks doesn't require adopting a new curriculum, but working with the existing curricula and resources to identify barriers to learning and possible solutions -- in other words, using a sharper knife, a bigger fork, or a deeper spoon to more effectively deal with what's already on your plate! The information in this book will be useful to individual teachers seeking to improve their craft, or to groups of teachers collaborating to support student success in science. In particular, general educators and special educators who are co-teaching science may find valuable common ground in the ideas presented in the book. Even if you are familiar with these frameworks, we believe you will find something new within these pages"--

Book Synopsis Exploring Creation with Botany by : Jeannie K. Fulbright
Download or read book Exploring Creation with Botany written by Jeannie K. Fulbright and published by Apologia Educational Ministries. This book was released on 2004 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book begins with a lesson on the nature of botany and the process of classifying plants. It then discusses the development of plants from seeds, the reproduction processes in plants, the way plants make their food, and how plants get their water and nutrients and distribute them throughout the body of the plant. As students study these topics, they also learn about many different kinds of plants in creation and where they belong in the plant classification system. The activities and projects use easy-to-find household items and truly make the lessons come alive! They include making a "light hut" in which to grow plants, dissection of a bean seed, growing seeds in plastic bags to watch the germination process, making a leaf skeleton, observing how plants grow towards light, measuring transpiration, forcing bulbs to grow out of season, and forcing pine cones to open and close. We recommend that you spend the entire school year covering this book.
