This growth comes with diversity in health practices and risks. Nurses are well placed in the healthcare field to affect the health of this population. Objective: The goal of this qualitative study was to explore the knowledge nurses hold on the diverse nature of the black American population. Method: Semi-structured interviews were used to gather information from 9 nurses. This sample of nurses had little knowledge of the cultural diversity within the black American population. Findings: The knowledge held by nurses was dependent mostly on their country of origin and their upbringing. This study exposed a perception of universality in the way the nurses treated all patients. It also exposed the spatial-racial lines that still exist in the US, which limits the interactions other races have with black Americans. Implications: The study implications were the 1) need for more exploration of nursing knowledge on black Americans with perhaps a larger sample of nurses and 2) development of education in the nursing and healthcare regarding this diversity.
