Book excerpt: National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I women student-athletes are high-level athletes who experience the traditional demands of job-hunting, interviewing, and the range of emotions experienced by college students transitioning from postsecondary education into the workforce. In addition, they have unique experiences related to their collegiate playing careers ending and being women in the workplace. Guided by Nancy Schlossberg's (1981) Model for Analyzing Human Adaptation to Transition, this qualitative study explored eight former NCAA Division I women soccer players' perceptions about the transition to the workforce. The focus was on the student-athletes' psychosocial and institutional influences related to the career transition process. Five themes emerged from the interviews: 1) institutional career support, 2) transferable skills, 3) career connections, 4) moving on, and 5) advice from former student-athletes. All the participants had a positive experience being a collegiate student-athlete, but still, they felt a lack of support and resources provided to them to aid with the career transition from their coaches, athletic department, and university. The participants acknowledged that internship experiences contributed to a positive transition into the workforce but expressed challenges completing an internship opportunity due to the time demands associated with being a student-athlete. The respondents also expressed other challenges with transitioning from being a student-athlete to a young professional, but all collectively used their families, friends, and teammates for support during the transition. The former student-athletes also unanimously believed they acquired several skills such as time management, conflict management, and discipline from being student-athletes that helped them have a more successful transition. Each participant provided advice to current student-athletes and recommendations to athletic programs, coaches, and administrators about the career transition process for student-athletes.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT:This qualitative study was designed to gather descriptive data through the use of visual elicitation and semi structured interviews to better understand the perception of and transition experiences of Black female athletes. Specifically, this phenomenological approach explored the salient factors that influence those perceptions and looked at how factors such as race, gender, athletic identity and athletic status intersect and influence their transition experiences. A sample (N=4) of participants who identified as Black female student athletes were interviewed and five superordinate themes were identified from the data: Perceptions of Visual Profile, Lack of People of Color (POC) Representation, Impact of Identity, Microaggressions, and Perceptions of own transition. Results indicated that participant’s racial and gender and athletic identities influenced their perceptions of life beyond sport. Findings are discussed collectively and implications for training are provided.

Book excerpt: There has been very limited research on sport retirement concerning the experiences that female collegiate athletes face when retiring from a sport due to injury. The purpose of this qualitatively study was to explore, understand, and describe experiences that former NCAA Division I female gymnasts had when they retired from gymnastics, part-way through college, due to injury. The main objective of the study was to attempt to understand female collegiate gymnasts' sport retirement experiences and the impact these experiences may have had on their identity development and college experience. The study also considered female collegiate gymnasts' perceived needs and coping skills during the injury and sport retirement processes. Initial and follow-up phone interviews were conducted with nine former female collegiate gymnasts who experienced difficulty when becoming injured and transitioning to retirement. Interviews were conducted to explore and understand the women's experiences with sport injury and retirement. A phenomenological approach was utilized to analyze the qualitative data in order to find common elements of female collegiate gymnasts' experiences with retirement due to injury. Several themes emerged from the women's experiences, including the role of gymnastics in the women's lives, the injury experience, the transition to retirement, the impact on their college experience, the impact on their identity, what was beneficial to them in coping, challenges in coping, and needs experienced in transitioning to retirement. The women also shared their advice for other collegiate athletes facing a similar situation and their feelings about participating in the study. Findings are discussed in terms of understanding female collegiate gymnasts and retirement due to injury, implications for psychologists and other professionals who work with female collegiate gymnasts, and implications for future research.

Book excerpt: The concept of role transition refers to a wide range of experiences found in life: job change, unemployment, divorce, entering or leaving prison, retirement, immi gration, "Gastarbeiten," becoming a parent, and so on. Such transitions often produce strain and hence a variety of problems for the transiting individual, occu pants of complementary social positions, and other members of one's social group and community. In spite of the diversity of role transitions that occur, however, it is important also to realize that many basic psychological processes can be discerned in ostensibly different instances. Research on role transitions has been dispersed across many different subdisci of the social sciences; the problem can be investigated from several points of plines view and levels of analysis. As modern societies become ever more complex, role transitions can be expected to increase in number and diversity, with a concomitant increase in detrimental consequences for the individual and society. Hence, for rea sons of both theory and practice, improved conceptual models and new empirical data are needed. The chapters in this book are the outcome of a N.A.T.O. symposium convened for the purpose of discussing aspects of role transitions from international and inter disciplinary perspectives. The meeting was designed to be a working conference to facilitate as much intellectual exchange and debate among participants as possible.
