Book excerpt: Fathers with children at home account for a substantial portion of the Canadian population. In contemporary Canada, a father's role no longer consists of distant breadwinning, but rather actively engaging in a family-centered lifestyle and being more involved in child care. Extensive research has focused primarily on the experiences of mothers and given very little attention to involved fathers. This study sought out to explore how fathers understand and describe involved fatherhood. Six participants, who identified as engaged fathers, participated in conversational interviews. The findings suggest that daily interaction through child rearing and playing with children was viewed as part of the father role. As a result, fathers adjusted their paid work and leisure pursuits in order to "be there" for their children. Fathers resisted dominant gendered ideologies through completing 'feminine' domestic chores, providing emotional care, and taking full responsibility for children's care throughout the week. Fathers also reproduced gendered norms, particularly during children's play, and by not taking paid parental leave. This research found that fathers resisted and reproduced gendered roles, and negotiated numerous constraints to meet their fathering responsibilities, which did not consist of solely playing with children. Fathers' involvement level is greatly influenced by leave policies in Canada; therefore changes to leave policies and pay equity are needed to support increased father involvement.

Book excerpt: "The scholarship on 'parenting' children with neurodisabilities has developed rapidly over the past thirty years; yet, on closer examination, this scholarship on 'parents' and "parenting" is often gender neutral and less is known about the parenting experiences of fathers. This dissertation, originating in the field of social work, is comprised of three related manuscripts. It was designed to explore the meanings fathers of children with neurodisabilities draw from their engagement with their child in order to deepen theoretical understandings of fathers' involvement and to ultimately inform clinical practice with families. The first article represents a scoping review of empirical literature on parenting in the context of childhood neurodisability and maps the affective, behavioural and cognitive dimensions of father involvement found within this scholarship. It reveals the limited nature of research on fathers' perspectives and through a systematic exploration, identifies aspects of father involvement that may be more fully explored in future research. The second and third articles represent an Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis study based on multiple conversations with eleven biological fathers of children with neurodisabilities. Article 2 introduces Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), qualitative research approach. This article describes how Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA; Smith et al., 2009) was employed to develop an understanding of the parenting experiences of fathers of children with neurodisabilities. IPA allows for in-depth exploration of participants' unique worlds and acknowledges the researchers' role in co-constructing those experiences. These tenets resemble the starting point of any social work intervention with individuals. In this article, the congruence of IPA with social work is discussed. Article 3 draws on fathers' narratives to build depth and enhance understandings of the concept of "father involvement". Fathers focused their parenting energy on understanding their child and understanding how to help their child with a neurodisability. Three master themes emerged from fathers' narrative. "Forming connections - from disruptions to new understandings" describes fathers' early struggles and joys in fatherhood and the influence of children's reciprocal contacts on fathers' understandings of their role. "Taking our place in the world" describes fathers' experiences and negotiations with the world inside and outside of their family. "Anticipating, emerging and growing" describes how fathers came to understand themselves and grow in new ways as a function of their relationship with their child. Fathers placed great importance on forging close physical and emotional connections with their child, though this was at times a slow and frustrating process. In the absence of an emotional connection or of information about how to support their child, parenting was a difficult and solitary journey. Practice implications of this study include the importance of noticing and reinforcing fathers' emotional connection with their children, discussing parenting experiences with fathers, acknowledging fathers as resources in the family unit, and prioritizing fathers' information needs. " --

Results from this study indicated that family relationships during participants' childhood influenced their definition of father involvement and their paternal roles and responsibilities toward their children. Fathering roles of educator, guide, and financial provider were highlighted by participants. Additional findings indicated that participants' relationship with their children was associated with their paternal identity and incarceration experience. Family therapy programs that focus on mentorship, relationship counseling, and parenting education were revealed as resources to strengthen participants' involvement in their children lives and education. Based on the findings of the study, the researcher suggests the need for designing father involvement programs and policies to enhance paternal involvement during and after incarceration; and the need for research studies to identify successful strategies that can be replicated across all family contexts.

The National Fatherhood Initiative has stated that as of 2014, about 17 million children live without fathers. This thesis consists of two literature reviews drawn from scholarly articles pulled from online databases. The first asks among low-income fathers, both resident and nonresident, which factors or correlates are associated with levels of father involvement? The second asks what effect do father-focused interventions, in comparison to co-parenting interventions and marriage interventions, have on father involvement in low-income families? It was found that the most prevalent correlates associated with involvement include the father's relationship to the child's mother, his relationship with his own father, culture, gender and substance abuse. Additionally, the current research on interventions has typically fallen under one of the following categories: father-focused, co-parenting or marriage. Interventions that were the most successful in increasing the father's level of involvement either improved his relationship with his child's mother or connected him with an educator, caseworker or social service. This project provides a foundation for future researchers by highlighting the gaps in the current literature as well providing recommendations for future studies.
