Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores the electron-neutrino and antineutrino cross section on argon using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber detector. With only a handful of electron neutrino cross section measurements in the hundred MeV to GeV range to date and only one of them on argon as the target nucleus: the result from the ArgoNeuT experiment, there is a need for new, large statistics, electron-neutrino cross section measurements. The precise knowledge of the electron neutrino cross section is fundamental for tests of lepton universality, making meaningful interpretations of neutrino oscillations and beyond the Standard Model search experiments involving electron neutrinos. Moreover, the appearance of electron neutrinos in a beam of predominantly muon neutrinos is the key signature in searches for sterile neutrinos in short-baseline experiments and measurements of Charge-Parity violation in long-baseline oscillation experiments. The measurements in this thesis utilize the NuMI neutrino beamline which is highly off-axis to the MicroBooNE detector but provides a rich source of electron-neutrinos. Critical to the measurement of the cross section is a detailed understanding of the flux of neutrinos at MicroBooNE and the uncertainties associated with it. The neutrino flux prediction tools used for the on-axis NuMI experiments are described and studied in detail for their implementation in the case of MicroBooNE. These tools will form the foundation for many future measurements using the NuMI beam at MicroBooNE. With the use of argon as a target for studying neutrino interactions, the large size of the nucleus introduces nuclear effects which impact the kinematics and multiplicities of the particles produced in the initial interaction. Such effects are complicated to model and are currently an active area of research with various models and neutrino generators available. The measurements in this thesis compare the electron-neutrino argon cross section to several neutrino generators with differing physics models. These comparisons provide important information in the modelling of neutrino interactions with nuclei such as argon. The target audience for this thesis is aimed at particle physics graduate students, particularly in the field of neutrino physics working with noble element time-projection chambers.

The superior capabilities of such detectors to reconstruct the spatial and calorimetric information of neutrino events have made them the detectors of choice in a number of experiments, specifically those looking to observe electron neutrino ($\nu_e$) appearance. The LArTPC promises excellent background rejection capabilities, especially in this "golden" channel for both short and long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. We present the first experimental observation of electron neutrinos and anti-neutrinos in the ArgoNeut LArTPC, in the energy range relevant to DUNE and the Fermilab Short Baseline Neutrino Program. Additionally, we present a demonstration of separation of electrons from gammas using neutrino data.

This book contains 13 papers that reflect the development of neutrino interactions with the electrons and protons in a fixed-target experiment that, beginning in 1980, grew out of the formal collaboration in high energy physics between Japanese and American institutions. These experiments were crucial to the merger of quantum electrodynamics and quantum weak dynamics, the foundation of electroweak theory today.

Book excerpt: The net contribution of the strange quark spins to the proton spin, $\Delta s$, can be determined from neutral current elastic neutrino-proton interactions at low momentum transfer combined with data from electron-proton scattering. The probability of neutrino-proton interactions depends in part on the axial form factor, which represents the spin structure of the proton and can be separated into its quark flavor contributions. Low momentum transfer neutrino neutral current interactions can be measured in MicroBooNE, a high-resolution liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) in its first year of running in the Booster Neutrino Beamline at Fermilab. The signal for these interactions in MicroBooNE is a single short proton track. We present our work on the automated reconstruction and classification of proton tracks in LArTPCs, an important step in the determination of neutrino- nucleon cross sections and the measurement of $\Delta s$.

Book excerpt: The MicroBooNE detector has recently completed its first year of neutrino beam data-taking in the Booster Neutrino Beam at Fermilab, having collected approximately half of its intended data ($3.4\times10^{20}$ of $6.6\times10^{20}$ protons on target). We present kinematic distributions of neutrino interactions observed from a small subset of this data (equivalent to $5\times10^$ protons on target), both as a first step towards a charged-current muon neutrino cross-section on argon, and as an exploration of the capabilities and operational challenges of large liquid argon time projection chambers as neutrino detectors. These distributions have been assessed using fully automated event selection and reconstruction.

Book excerpt: The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) will use a large underground liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) to study neutrino oscillations, search for proton decay, and observe supernova neutrinos, should a supernova occur. There is a currently a rich program of R & D on LArTPCs in preparation for DUNE. The Cryogenic Apparatus for Precision Tests of Argon Interactions with Neutrino (CAPTAIN) program is one of these R & D efforts. This thesis describes studies on the neutron interactions in liquid argon using the mini-CAPTAIN LArTPC at a neutron beam facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Studies of neutron signatures can help to improve neutrino energy reconstruction in DUNE, important for the neutrino oscillation measurements. In addition, neutron data can be used to measure cross sections of the neutron background to supernova burst neutrinos. This work represents the first measurement of neutron interactions in a liquid argon TPC in the energy range above 20 MeV.

Book excerpt: The neutrino is the most fascinating elementary particle due to its elusive nature and outstanding properties that have attracted the interest of generations of physicists since 1930, when it was first postulated by Wolfgang Pauli as a 'desperate remedy' to explain the apparent energy violation in the beta decay. Many fundamental discoveries in particle physics had the neutrino involved in one way or another. To date, neutrino physics is still one of the hottest topics of modern particle physics. Key experiments and significant theoretical developments have contributed in building up what we can call now the Standard Model of Neutrino Physics. The aim of the book is to provide graduate students and young researchers a comprehensive tutorial in modern neutrino physics, specially tailored with emphasis on the educational aspects. It provides an overview of the basics and of recent achievements in the field, from both experimental and theoretical points of view.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I measure a large set of observables in inclusive charged current muon neutrino scattering on argon with the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber operating at Fermilab. I evaluate three neutrino interaction models based on the widely used GENIE event generator using these observables. The measurement uses a data set consisting of neutrino interactions with a final state muon candidate fully contained within the MicroBooNE detector. These data were collected in 2016 with the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam, which has an average neutrino energy of 800 MeV, using an exposure corresponding to 5.0 x 1019 protons-on-target. The analysis employs fully automatic event selection and charged particle track reconstruction and uses a data-driven technique to separate neutrino interactions from cosmic ray background events. I find that GENIE models consistently describe the shapes of a large number of kinematic distributions for fixed observed multiplicity, but I show an indication that the observed multiplicity fractions deviate from GENIE expectations.

Book excerpt: NuInt07, the fifth in a series of international workshops, was held at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, IL. It was the successful continuation of a series of workshops focused solely on the understanding and measurement of low energy neutrino-nucleus interactions. Neutrino cross sections in the few-GeV energy range are an important ingredient for neutrino oscillation experiments as well as being interesting in their own right. Such measurements and their accompanying theoretical calculations had not been updated for decades. The goal of this workshop series has been to remedy this situation by providing an environment where both experimentalists and theorists in nuclear and high energy physics can come together to review and discuss recent progress in neutrino-nucleus measurements and calculations.
