Religiousbullying, which occurs to individuals based on religious and non-religious bias, is one form ofbias-based bullying that has not been researched in-depth academically. Hence, from myobservations of religious bullying in one public school environment, I explored the potentialconnection between religious bullying and religious literacy to consider how teachers could usereligious literacy as a means to address religious bullying during the school hour. Through aCritical Communicative Methodology, this study surveyed 106 students and interviewed 32participants altogether in Modesto, California and Montreal, Quebec, due to the mandatoryreligious literacy courses in secondary schools in each of these cities. Findings show that theconnection between religious bullying and religious literacy can be positive and negativedepending on the curriculum, teacher attitude, teacher training, and administrative support. Thesocial-ecological framework helps us understand that the lived environment in and outside of theschool is equally important in its influence of religious literacy and religious bullying. Thus, evenwhere a religious literacy course exists, the lived environment can influence teacher or student biastowards religious bullying, regardless of the school curriculum on religious literacy"--

However, research into religious literacy's role in equipping preservice educators with the skills and knowledge needed in their task of educating for a critical, social justice-oriented citizenship is still lacking. My empirical case study of faculty and preservice teachers in one Canadian Prairie university allowed me to investigate how these participants both engaged with religious diversity in their classroom and how they viewed what I call critical religious literacy (CRL) as an educational aim. As a methodological bricoleur, I blended an empirical exploratory case study approach with philosophical analysis, using a normative case study approach. Empirically, findings demonstrate that while divided on questions of implementation, participants largely agree on the urgent need for CRL as an educational aim in teacher education. Philosophically, analyzing the findings through the mobilization of concepts of epistemic injustice and White Christian privilege highlights the complex ways religious illiteracy among educators may serve to perpetuate discrimination and epistemic harm. Thus, this dissertation argues that the strongest justification for including CRL in teacher education programs is one that links CRL to critical democratic aims inherent in a social justice-oriented model of citizenship in order to reduce or eliminate discrimination and potential epistemic injustices related to intersectional religious identities"--

The study used a correlational design. This design analyzed students who have taken the Olweus bullying scale and a religious commitment survey. The surveys were analyzed using the Stepwise regression model. Understanding the correlation between religiousness and bullying perspectives could help build a knowledge base for all social factors affecting bullying. The model expressing the relationship between females who self-report as bullies and the religious variable of Extrinsic(personal) was found to have a statistically significant relationship.

The book is situated in a western 'post-austerity' climate, where the re-entrenchment of neoliberal policies has created and exacerbated various social divisions and injustices. Kitching outlines a number of related child and family-related injustices and ghosts that haunt the majority Catholic primary school sector in Ireland. He argues that the education policy focus on parent choice of school exploits religious, spiritual and non-religious worldviews for the purposes of privatising and marketising school systems. Kitching argues that education policy favours variously white, middle class, Catholic families, and maintains the private patronage model of schooling inherited from the colonial era. Second, he argues that there is a clear need to publicly engage majority collective memories of childhood, religion and schooling. A public reckoning with injustice, pain and joy in childhoods past and present in Ireland is necessary to challenge the self-interested, unjust nature of contemporary education policies, and to imagine and create an affirmative public school landscape that deeply engages with a plurality of worldviews.Exploring in-depth research with over one hundred children, the book goes on to demonstrate the multiple ways children encounter religiosity, spirituality, belief, and consumption in their everyday lives. This research highlights how children negotiate the paradoxes and injustices of schooling, including first communion sacramental preparation in a Catholic-dominated school system. The book shows how children's encounters with people, religious artefacts and consumer products complicate neat categories of religious, spiritual and non-religious child experience. Kitching argues that children merge myth, heritage and consumer culture in forming their own worldviews. He also contends that how children's encounters with the world raise multiple ethical questions about our accountability and obligations to one another. Kitching frames this research in an innovative, critical postsecular perspective. This perspective explores what can emerge from the failure of individualist concepts of reason, religion, science and rights to offer neutral common ground for education. Drawing particularly on the work of Rosi Braidotti, he argues that meaningful freedom, and deep engagement with plurality in education can only be achieved by acknowledging the unchosen nature of our obligations to one another. He supports the 'becoming public' of schools and schooling, which challenges the colonial and neoliberal encouragement of parents to actively choose a secular or religious school. Kitching also calls for greater public engagement with the plurality of each child.
