Book excerpt: One woman 10,000 miles on foot 6 countries 8 pairs of hiking boots 3,000 cups of tea 1,000 days and nights "The only way to survive three years of walking was to embrace the moment of now.”—from Wild by Nature Not since Cheryl Strayed gifted us with her adventure on the Pacific Crest Trail in her memoir, Wild, has there been such a powerful epic adventure by a woman alone. In Wild by Nature, National Geographic Explorer Sarah Marquis takes you on the trail of her ten-thousand-mile solo hike across the remote Gobi desert from Siberia to Thailand, at which point she was transported by boat to complete the hike at her favorite tree in Australia. Against nearly insurmountable odds and relying on hunting and her own wits, Sarah Marquis survived the Mafia, drug dealers, thieves on horseback who harassed her tent every night for weeks, temperatures from subzero to scorching, life-threatening wildlife, a dengue fever delirium in the Laos jungle, tropic ringworm in northern Thailand, dehydration, and a life-threatening abscess. This is an incredible story of adventure, human ingenuity, persistence, and resilience that shows firsthand what it is to adventure as a woman in the most dangerous of circumstance, what it is to be truly alone in the wild, and why someone would challenge themselves with an expedition others would call crazy. For Marquis, her story is about freedom, being alive and wild by nature.

This book narrates his journey to explore the interior of Western Australia in 1854. Starting from Northam on 10th July 1854, several disasters came their way. Many horses consumed toxic native plants and died; more were found dead a week later. Moreover, Austin was forced to discard equipment, and one of the men accidentally shot himself. Austin then had no option but to retreat and return to Port Gregory. Nevertheless, during the journey, he found and named Mount Magnet. In addition, he reported signs of gold in the Murchison region, but no one ever acknowledged his claim for recognition of its discovery.

Wandering and exploring, at different times, with my father, my dog and my mates, through this Australian high country bush-land wilderness, kindled in me a love of nature and a strong curiosity to discover and explore the natural environment of our Great South Land.

No other region of Australia has such a diverse range of wilderness scenery in such close proximity, from the vast sandy regions of Fraser and Moreton Islands to the rainforests of Springbrook and Lamington, the rocky peaks of Mount Barney and the granite outcrops of Girraween. Nearly every major Australian wilderness type is represented here. The jewel in the crown as far as mountain scenery goes is the Scenic Rim and that is what this book is about. The Scenic Rim is a long chain of mountains beginning at Point Danger on the Gold Coast and then leading westwards to encompass Springbrook, Lamington, the Border Ranges, Lever's Plateau and the high rocky peaks of Mount Lindesay and Mount Barney before joining the Great Dividing Range at Wilsons Peak. Here the Rim turns northwards, following the Main Range through Cunningham's Gap and then the ridge crest further northwards to the Mistake Mountains and the Little Liverpool Range near Laidley. This guide describes bushwalks and climbs in these superb ranges as well as the nearby areas of Tamborine and Flinders Peak.

Book excerpt: Journals of Two Expeditions of Discovery in North-West and Western Australia Vol. 1 is a work by George Grey. Grey was a British soldier, voyager, colonial administrator and author. Excerpt: "This morning directly after breakfast I read prayers to the men, and then commenced my preparations for the excursion on which I intended to start in the evening. Whilst I was occupied in arranging my papers Mr. Lushington observed two natives sitting on the rocks on the top of the cliffs which overlooked the valley, and gazing down intently on us. The instant that he made friendly signs to them they rose from their seats and began to retreat. Some of the party then called to them and one of the natives answered; but they still moved rapidly away. I would not allow them to be followed for fear of increasing their alarm, and in the hope that they would return, but was disappointed. It must have awakened strange feelings in the breast of these two savages, who could never before have seen civilized man, thus to have sat spectators and overlookers of the every action of such incomprehensible beings as we must have appeared; and the relation to their comrades of the wonders they had witnessed could not have been to them a whit less marvellous than the tales of the grey-headed Irish peasant, when he recounts the freaks of the fairies, "whose midnight revels by the forest side or fountain" he has watched intently from some shrub-clad hill."
