Download or read book Explorations in Interdisciplinary Reading written by Robbie F. Castleman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-05-31 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tension between reading Scripture as primarily a historically situated text on one hand and binding canon addressed to a community of faith on the other constitutes a crucial issue for biblical interpretation. Considering the ways the disciplines of Biblical Studies, Biblical Theology, Patristics, and Systematic Theology approach Scripture and biblical interpretation, the "Biblical Theology, Hermeneutics, and Theological Disciplines" study group, within the Institute of Biblical Research, established a four-year project aimed at clarifying the relationships between these diverse lines of inquiry into scriptural interpretation found in each of these disciplines. The goal of this project was to foster a sustained discussion where exploratory papers might be proposed, composed, and rewritten for final form using a collaborative process. This research project, and the present volume resulting from it, offers valuable insights into the integration of Biblical Studies and Theology as subdisciplines within the academy. The essays collected here fall naturally into the following sections: Exegetical Explorations, Reception-Historical Explorations, and finally Theological-Practical Explorations.

Book Synopsis Conversion in Luke and Paul: An Exegetical and Theological Exploration by : David S. Morlan
Download or read book Conversion in Luke and Paul: An Exegetical and Theological Exploration written by David S. Morlan and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-12-20 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the conversion theologies of Luke and Paul. For Luke and Paul conversion played an important role in the early Christian experience and Morlan offers a fresh look into how they interpreted this phenomenon. Morlan traverses representative texts in the Lukan and Pauline corpus equipped with three theological questions. What is the change involved in this conversion? Why is conversion necessary? Who is responsible for conversion? Morlan presents theological and exegetical analysis of Luke 15, Acts 2, Acts 17.16-34, Romans 2 and Romans 9-11 and answers these questions, and, in turn, builds theological profiles for both Luke and Paul. These profiles provide fresh insight into the theological relationship between Luke and Paul, showing significant similarities as well as sharp contrasts between them. Similarities surface between Luke and Paul concerning the centrality of Christology in their conversion theologies. While showing a complex relationship between human and divine agency in conversion, both Luke and Paul understand successful conversion to be impossible without the intervention of an agency outside of the pre-convert.

Book Synopsis A Handbook to Old Testament Exegesis by : William P. Brown
Download or read book A Handbook to Old Testament Exegesis written by William P. Brown and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2017-03-17 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for both Hebrew and non-Hebrew students, A Handbook to Old Testament Exegesis offers a fresh, hands-on introduction to exegesis of the Old Testament. William P. Brown begins not with the biblical text itself but with the reader, helping students to identify their own interpretive lenses before engaging the biblical text. Brown guides the student through a wide variety of interpretive approaches, including modern methodologiesâ€"feminist, womanist, Latino/a, queer, postcolonial, disability, and ecological approachesâ€"alongside more traditional methods. This allows students to critically reflect on themselves as bona fide interpreters. While covering a wide range of biblical passages, Brown also highlights two common biblical texts throughout the work to help show how each interpretive approach highlights different dimensions of the same texts. Students will appreciate the value of an empathetic inquiry of Scripture that is both inclusive of others and textually in-depth.
Book Synopsis Living in the Flesh by the Spirit by : Brian H. Thomas
Download or read book Living in the Flesh by the Spirit written by Brian H. Thomas and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-02-05 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does Paul mean by “the flesh”? There is a great deal of confusion among laymen and disagreement among scholars on this issue. Christians know that we are supposed to “walk by the Spirit” so that they will not gratify the desires of the flesh, but it is not entirely clear what these expressions mean. Furthermore, Paul can also be confusing when he addresses the Christian’s relationship to the flesh—are we in the flesh or not? This book clarifies these issues for us by exploring the different meanings of “flesh” throughout the Bible, and analyzing the influence both of Old Testament conceptions of “flesh” as well as new salvation-historical realities on Paul’s thinking, especially in the context of the controversy over circumcision in Galatians. By carefully following Paul’s thought, we will also gain greater insight into other Pauline themes that intersect with his theology of the flesh: new creation and his view of this age and the one to come. Most importantly, we will discover Paul’s own program for our spiritual transformation so that we may live a life of Christlike love and service despite the moral weakness of our flesh.
