Inconsistent and overly narrow definitions of body image make it difficult to draw conclusions regarding the degree and type of dissatisfaction across cultural and/or various ethnic groups. Thus far, research has largely focused on size, shape, and weight concerns, ignoring physical features that may be salient to women belonging to non-Caucasian ethnic groups. This study explored African-American (AA) preferences for weight, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and salient physical appearance attributes, as well as their identification with the "thin" ideal, racial identity salience, and physical racial identity. Participants were 119 AA women and 39 Caucasian women recruited from the St. Louis metropolitan area. Participants' actual and ideal physical attributes, current perceived WHR and weight, ideal WHR and weight, and reactions to the WHR and weight assessment task were assessed and examined in relation to ethnic group membership, endorsement of racial identity, identification with the "thin" ideal, and identification with traditional African physical attributes. Results indicate that AA women reported less discrepancy between their actual-own body image ideal and more ethnic specific features (ESF) as actual traits, but not as ideal traits. There was a negative relationship between internalization of the thin ideal and acceptance of African physical features, but acceptance of African physical features was not related to the number of ESF reported. The salience of race for self-identity was positively related to the number of ESF reported as representative of the cultural ideal only. Although a significant interaction between physical racial identity and internalization of the thin ideal was found, further analyses did not support the hypothesized moderation effect. Finally, AA participants reported less of a discrepancy between their perceived current and ideal weight, but not WHR, and reported more concerns with the WHR/FRS measure than the Caucasian participants. The present study lends support to the differences in salient physical characteristics across ethnic groups. Strategies to increase understanding and completion of the measures, further examine relationships among racial identification and body image measures, and improve reliability of findings are discussed.

Specifically, this study examined how Black women define beauty by means of variables such as body shape, skin complexion, and hair texture; whether African American women ages 18-30 compared themselves to media images; and if so, did comparison to these media images impact African American women's body satisfaction. In addition, this study explored if African American women felt pressure to adopt beauty standards attributed to the dominant culture, as well as the role of racial identity in forming beauty standards and social comparison behavior. Twelve African American women were interviewed and findings of this exploratory research illustrated that the Black community has different standards than the traditional beauty standards of the U.S. Even though interviewees articulated standards of beauty for women in the Black community, there was a lack of uniformity in how these women felt about their own attractiveness: some identified with the Black beauty standards, while others did not. In addition, opinions varied regarding Black women's engagement in social comparison behavior and whether it was related to racial identity or body satisfaction. Limitations of study included: how Black women define social comparison behavior and racial identity, self-identification of participants, and the lack of Caucasian women included in this study. However, this research still provided rich data exploring Black women's perceptions of beauty among other issues within the Black community. Future research is required to better understand influences shaping standards of beauty within this subculture of the United States and recommendations are provided in the last chapter.

Book excerpt: The existing psychological literature on African American women's body image has tended to purport that this population is protected from body dissatisfaction and negative self-appraisals due to cultural acceptance of larger body sizes and a lessened preoccupation with the thin ideal. Though a thin ideal may not be central, there is ample sociocultural and historical support for the idea that skin tone and color, hair length and texture, and facial features represent appearance characteristics that are salient to the body image of Black women. When these characteristics are considered, a very different picture of Black women's body image begins to appear.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Abstract] The purpose of my thesis is to address the question "What is the African-American woman's experience of body image?" It is a study done heuristically. The study is designed to explore personal experiences of body images as viewed by African-American women. This question derived from my own personal experience and it also used the experiences of eight other African-American women. All of the women are different ages, shapes, sizes, and complexions. An overview of literature included books, journals, and other theses enhanced my research. The themes that emerged from this study produced a deeper understanding of personal knowledge. These themes include gaining awareness of one's own body image, relating body image to one's individual and cultural self, and understanding the awareness of one's own body image. The basis of this research is also significant because the results have implications for further study. Not only can this study be related to African-American women, it can be applied to women of any background. We live in a world where images are inescapable. For many women, accepting their images are inescapablr. For many women, accepting their image is a key component in accepting themselves. This study is also ideal for aiding young girls to gain knowledge and understanding concerning their own body image experience. Shedding light on this phenomenon, could promote a smoother transition from adolescence to young adulthood. This information can also enable therapists to more actively and effectively work with clients. Because body images issues work effectively with a more diverse body of clientele. This study is uniquely important because it describes a full body experience as it solely relates to African-American women. It is my desire that African-American women will celebrate their individual differences by acknowledging and accepting them as their own.

This has resulted in Black women reporting more positive body image because the research methodology and focus is solely on whether or not these women want to be thin. Rather than focusing on the actual weight on the scales, the overarching goal of this study was to change the focus of body image research with Black women to that of shape and size satisfaction, rather than weight and thinness. Specifically, this study is one of the firsts to examine the ideal body shape of African American women, focusing on level of satisfaction with areas of the body (i.e. the mid and lower torso). Seventy-nine African American women enrolled at the University of Missouri completed an online survey with several instruments designed to measure concerns about body shape and experiences of feeling fat, body image and weight-related concerns, and shape satisfaction. Several regression analyses demonstrated that satisfaction with mid and lower torso significantly influenced body shape satisfaction and overall appearance evaluation. Implications for future research, prevention and counseling are discussed.
