Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pistol and Revolver Shooting On account of this relation, and the fact that skill with these arms can be instantly utilized in rifle shooting, the development of marksmanship with the pistol and revolver assumes national importance. While numerous standard works have been written on the subject of rifle shooting, there is comparatively little information available on pistol and revolver shooting. The object of this volume is to supply prac tical information on this subject. The author has attempted to treat the subject in a clear and concise manner, keeping the size of the volume as small as practicable and so as to be conveniently carried in the pocket. Particular pains have been taken to give sound advice and elementary instruction to beginners. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pistol and Revolver Shooting, Vol. 34 Interest in pistol and revolver shooting has increased very rapidly in recent years and particularly since smokeless powder has been introduced. The revolver and the magazine pistol now constitute part of the regular equipment of army and navy officers and cavalry troops. Regulations governing practice shooting with these arms have been issued and adopted by both branches of the service and by the National Guard of the various States. In the National Rifle Association and in the various State rifle associations that have recently been organized, pistol and revolver shooting has an important place, and the matches provided are largely patronized. In the numerous civilian shooting clubs scattered throughout the country pistol and revolver shooting has become extremely popular, and in many cases the majority of the members practice more frequently with the smaller arms than with the rifle. Practice with the pistol and revolver affords training in sighting, steady holding, and pulling the trigger, which are the essential features of rifle shooting also. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Rifle Shooting In my first book on Revolver Shooting, (published in 1901), I drew attention to the dangerous consequences which a nation may incur when excessive devotion to such games as cricket, golf and football, leads its men to ignore the art of handling firearms. Many partisans of these games were indignant at my remarks, but two regrettable wars have had a salutary influence in this respect. Public opinion now endorses my doctrine of the absolute necessity that every able-bodied man should be able to bring at least as much skill to the handling of a rifle as he evinces with the cricket bat or golf club. A second desideratum mooted in my book - that advancing civilisation ought to subordinate the arbitrament of arms to the decisions of an international Court of Arbitration, has, unfortunately, not been fulfilled as yet, though matters are trending that way. Until it is so fulfilled, men must be taught the proper handling of a rifle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Rifle Shooting: From the American Standpoint It is not without some misgiving that I venture on this, my first attempt to' write a book on rifle shooting. Indeed, the idea would probably never have occurred to me had I not been asked by many brother riflemen to put into writing the numerous small matters I have at various times investigated, both for their interest and my own. Undoubtedly, much will be found in these pages that is ancient history to more experienced shooters, but if I have succeed-cd in making clear the first prin ciples Of rifle shooting to the beginner, I shall be well satisfied. Perhaps the experienced rifleman may find a few helpful hints, too, in some of the original de vices described, and in the chapter on the Rifleman Himself. I have also to acknowledge the generous help re ceived in the way Of suggestions from brother rifle men, and from reading various recent English works on the subject Of rifle shooting - notably those of Tip pins and Freemantle. If the reflection of my study Of these works shows itself in some of the thoughts ex pressed in the following pages, I can only say that I am not ashamed to freely acknowledge the source from which a great deal of useful information has been de rived. Our English cous'ins have.had at least five years more experience than we in the matter of high power rifles and ammunition, and a study Of their methods cannot fail to benefit us. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Shot Beginning would involve the necessity of giving that and other puerile information. Nobody would be the better for a learned chapter on gun actions. In the first place, these actions are no longer patents, they are open to anyone who likes to use them, and consequently the days when one selected a gun-maker because his patent action was conceived to be the better, are long gone by. The reason is that each gun-maker can be trusted to use the best principle when he has a choice of them all, or at least the best available for the money to be expended upon its making in the gun. Ejectors are nearly in the same position but single triggers are not. I was so fortunate as to make a discovery in regard to single triggers that is now acknowledged to be of great assistance to the gun trade; the want of it had for a hundred years been the stumbling-block to the patent single triggers that had begun to trouble gun-makers in the time of the celebrated Colonel Thornton. That is referred to in its proper chapter, because single triggers now Occupy the place that formerly actions held, and at a later date ejector systems usurped, in assisting to the selection of a gun maker.
