This book was released on 1928 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an unsymmetrical wing and a rotating Magnus cylinder, the lift is produced by the superposition of parallel and circulatory flows. An explanation of the circulatory flow is furnished by the boundary-layer theory of Prandtl and the consequent vortex formation. According to this explanation, it must evidently be possible to increase the circulation either by increasing the size of the stronger (lower) vortex or by decreasing the size of the weaker (upper) vortex. In this sense, according to Professor H. Zickendraht, we have a new type of wing from which the boundary layer is removed by forcing air out or sucking it in through openings in the upper surface of the wing near its trailing edge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of the first investigation of the physical principle of preventing the streamline separation by removing the boundary layer. It was aeronautical, in that it dealt with airfoils, but the results are of a very general application.
Book Synopsis Experiments with an Airfoil Model on which the Boundary Layer is Controlled Without the Use of Supplementary Equipment by : I. H. Abbott
Download or read book Experiments with an Airfoil Model on which the Boundary Layer is Controlled Without the Use of Supplementary Equipment written by I. H. Abbott and published by . This book was released on 1931 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes tests to determine the possibility of controlling the boundary layer on the upper surface of an airfoil by use of the low pressure existing near the leading edge. The low pressure was used to induce flow through slots in the upper surface of the wing. The tests showed that the angle of attack for maximum lift was increased at the expense of a reduction in the maximum lift coefficient and an increase in the drag coefficient.

Book Synopsis Wings with Nozzle-shaped Slots by : Richard Katzmayr
Download or read book Wings with Nozzle-shaped Slots written by Richard Katzmayr and published by . This book was released on 1929 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even before the publication of the results of the Gottingen experiments on the removal of the boundary layer by suction, experiments with nozzle-slotted wings were begun. A report of those experiments will be given here. Taken collectively, the experiments show that, as regards increasing the lift values, the effect of the air flowing from the nozzle-shaped slots is similar to the effect produced in the case of ordinary slotted wings. The high lift values are attained, however, at the smaller angles of attack employed in ordinary flight.
Book Synopsis The Frictionless Flow in the Region Around Two Circles by : M. Lagally
Download or read book The Frictionless Flow in the Region Around Two Circles written by M. Lagally and published by . This book was released on 1931 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation attempts to surpass the boundaries of pure mathematical interest in that it possesses as an example, a flow investigation in a multiply-connected region. Then the results appear to be carried out by means of an appropriate conformal representation of the region around two chosen closed curves. Thus we have the basis of an exact plane theory of the biplane. Certainly, the known difficulties of the accomplishment of this representation depend upon the region around the given curves. It is easier to choose the transformation function so that we obtain the transformal curves which, as contours of the wings of a biplane are at least useful to a certain extent, and correspond to the Joukowski monoplane wing.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A variable-porosity suction glove has been flown on the F-16XL-2 aircraft to demonstrate the feasibility of this technology for the proposed High-Speed Civil Transport (HSCT). Boundary-layer transition data have been obtained on the titanium glove primarily at Mach 2.0 and altitudes of 53,000-55,000 ft. The objectives of this supersonic laminar flow control flight experiment have been to achieve 50- to 60-percent-chord laminar flow on a highly swept wing at supersonic speeds and to provide data to validate codes and suction design. The most successful laminar flow results have not been obtained at the glove design point (Mach 1.9 at an altitude of 50,000 ft). At Mach 2.0 and an altitude of 53,000 ft, which corresponds to a Reynolds number of 22.7 multiplied by 10[factor 6], optimum suction levels have allowed long runs of a minimum of 46-percent-chord laminar flow to be achieved. This paper discusses research variables that directly impact the ability to obtain laminar flow and techniques to correct for these variables.
