Book excerpt: Laboratory model simulation of large-scale earth processes is rarely undertaken because of scale effects, nonlinearity, and questions of representativeness with respect to the real case. Hydraulic fractures generate distortion fields that can be measured with high precision both in the laboratory and in the field. A combination of field and laboratory data allows us to test our ability to measure displacements, make forward predictions, and invert real measurements; thus it is important to have some means of simulation, other than purely numerical simulation. This paper contains the results of a set of experiments on the surface deformation arising from a pressurized fracture, using laser holography and Fizeau interferometry of noncontacting techniques to precisely sample the displacement field above a scale model. The results are remarkably accurate and consistent, and compare reasonably well with analytical and numerical model predictions. The techniques have potential applications in geomechanics and geotechnical engineering for laboratory study of various linear and nonlinear problems.

Book excerpt: Although the surface deformation resulting from the opening of a single fracture in a layered elastic half-space resembles the observed deformation at the InSalah site, it seems unlikely that only a single fracture is involved. This raises the question of how interaction among multiple fractures affects surface deformation. Finite element modeling is used to build a 3D model of a reservoir with multiple fractures. The interacting cracks and fractures give this model a more complicated stress state, and so any surface deformation would be different from that of a model with a single fracture. Geodetic monitoring of large-scale CO 2 sequestration provides a potentially powerful and cost-effective tool for interrogating reservoir structure and processes. For example, InSAR observations at the InSalah, Algeria sequestration site have mapped the surface deformation above an active reservoir, and helped delineate the effects of CO2 storage. The impact of interactions on individual fractures and the qualitative changes in the surface displacement and stress fields are considered and the importance of orientation, position and fracture area is investigated. It was found that when the crack locations are biased towards stacked parallel arrangements, then the shielding effect of interactions dominates, meaning that the overall stiffness of a representative volume increases. When collinear interactions dominate then the overall stiffness is reduced. These effects are then used to find a volume average and a continuum description of a solid with effective elastic properties. In this way a volume of fractured rock can be replaced with a representative volume with elastic properties that approximate the interaction effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific understanding of fluid flow in rock fracturesâ€"a process underlying contemporary earth science problems from the search for petroleum to the controversy over nuclear waste storageâ€"has grown significantly in the past 20 years. This volume presents a comprehensive report on the state of the field, with an interdisciplinary viewpoint, case studies of fracture sites, illustrations, conclusions, and research recommendations. The book addresses these questions: How can fractures that are significant hydraulic conductors be identified, located, and characterized? How do flow and transport occur in fracture systems? How can changes in fracture systems be predicted and controlled? Among other topics, the committee provides a geomechanical understanding of fracture formation, reviews methods for detecting subsurface fractures, and looks at the use of hydraulic and tracer tests to investigate fluid flow. The volume examines the state of conceptual and mathematical modeling, and it provides a useful framework for understanding the complexity of fracture changes that occur during fluid pumping and other engineering practices. With a practical and multidisciplinary outlook, this volume will be welcomed by geologists, petroleum geologists, geoengineers, geophysicists, hydrologists, researchers, educators and students in these fields, and public officials involved in geological projects.

Book excerpt: Engineering activities such as enhanced geothermal energy production and improved oil recovery techniques are heavily dependent on the permeability of the subsurface, while others such as CO2 sequestration and nuclear waste disposal rely on the efficiency of rock formations as transport barriers. In either case fractures provide the main pathways for fluid flow and transport, especially in rocks with lower matrix porosity. Laboratory experiments aimed at quantifying the chemo-mechanical responses of fractures have shown a range of results, some of which contradict simple conceptual models. For example, under conditions favoring mineral dissolution, where one would expect an overall increase in permeability, experiments show that permeability increases under some conditions and decreases under others. Recent experiments have attempted to link these core-scale observations to the relevant small-scale processes occurring within fractures. Results suggest that the loss of mechanical strength in asperities due to chemical alteration may cause non-uniform deformation and alteration of fracture apertures. However, due to the lack of direct micro-scale measurements of the coupled chemical and mechanical processes that lead to alteration of contacting fracture surfaces, our ability to predict the long-term evolution of fractures is still limited. To explore the processes that control permeability evolution, I developed a computational model that uses micro-scale surface roughness and explicitly couples dissolution and elastic deformation to calculate local alterations in fracture aperture under chemical and mechanical stresses. A depth-averaged algorithm of fracture flow is used to model reactive transport and chemical alteration of the fracture surfaces. Then, I deform the resulting altered fracture-surfaces using an algorithm that calculates the elastic deformation. The results of the model are compared with flow-through experiments conducted on fractured limestone. The fracture apertures are mapped before and after the experiments. These detailed aperture measurements are used as input to the new coupled model. The experiments cover a wide range of transport and reaction conditions; some exhibited negligible reaction-induced deformation and formation of distinct dissolution channels and others more uniform dissolution and measurable deformation caused by dissolution. Simulation results predict these general trends and the small-scale details in regions of contacting asperities.

The solid medium is assumed to be isotropic-homogeneous where linear elasticity applies. The e ects of the uid in the fracture is represented by a uniform pressure applied onto the two fracture walls. The fracture is assumed to be rectangular in shape and various dipping angles are considered. In addition to the full 3D solution, we reduce the 3D problem to a plane-strain geometry, so that 2D codes can participate in the comparison and results can be compared with those available in the literature.

Book excerpt: Emerging Technologies in Hydraulic Fracturing and Gas Flow Modelling features the latest strategies for exploiting depleted and unconventional petroleum rock formations as well as simulating associated gas flow mechanisms. The book covers a broad range of multivarious stimulation methods currently applied in practice. It introduces new stimulation techniques including a comprehensive description of interactions between formation/hydraulic fracturing fluids and the host rock material. It provides further insight into practices aimed at advancing the operation of hydrocarbon reservoirs and can be used either as a standalone resource or in combination with other related literature. The book can serve as a propaedeutic resource and is appropriate for those seeking rudimentary information on the exploitation of ultra-impermeable oil and gas reservoirs. Professionals and researchers in the field of petroleum, civil, oil and gas, geotechnical and geological engineering who are interested in the production of unconventional petroleum resources as well as students undertaking studies in similar subject areas will find this to be an instructional reference.
