Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its early beginnings at SLAC in the 1970's, the study of nucleon spin structure using polarized lepton beams and polarized nucleon targets has become increasingly important in nuclear and particle physics, with current experiments at several of the world's high energy and nuclear physics laboratories (CERN, DESY, SLAC and Jefferson Lab) and with enormous related theoretical studies. The understanding of the fascinating but complicated problem of nucleon spin structure has progressed substantially, but fundamental questions remain and it can be confidently predicted that future activity will be high. The Erice Course on The Spin Structure of the Nucleon covered both the experimental and theoretical aspects of the subject, and this volume includes the lectures given at the School. In many cases the lecture material has been extended and updated by the authors. In addition, several recent publications on experimental work have been added in an appendix.

Book excerpt: In the recent experiments E154 and E155 at SLAC the spin-dependent structure functions g1(superscript n), g1{sup p}, and g1{sup d} of the neutron, proton, and deuteron were measured by scattering longitudinally polarized 48:3 GeV electrons off longitudinally polarized targets. We report on the measurement of g1(superscript n) by E154, and on the preliminary results on g1° from E155. The SLAC results provide the most precise determination to date of the polarized structure functions. We observe relatively large values of g1(superscript n) at low x that call into question the reliability of data extrapolation to x -> 0. Such divergent behavior disagrees with predictions of the conventional Regge theory, but is qualitatively explained by perturbative QCD. We perform a Next-to-Leading Order perturbative QCD analysis of the world data on the nucleon spin-dependent structure functions. Using the parameterizations of the helicity-dependent parton distributions obtained in the analysis, we evolve the data to Q2 = 5 GeV2, determine the first moments of the polarized structure functions of the proton and neutron, and find agreement with the Bjorken sum rule.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main challenges in nuclear and particle physics in the last 20 years has been to understand how the proton''s spin is built up from its quark and gluon constituents. Quark models generally predict that about 60% of the proton''s spin should be carried by the spin of the quarks inside, whereas high energy scattering experiments have shown that the quark spin contribution is small OCo only about 30%. This result has been the underlying motivation for about 1000 theoretical papers and a global program of dedicated spin experiments at BNL, CERN, DESY and Jefferson Laboratory to map the individual quark and gluon angular momentum contributions to the proton''s spin, which are now yielding exciting results. This book gives an overview of the present status of the field: what is new in the data and what can be expected in the next few years. The emphasis is on the main physical ideas and the interpretation of spin data. The interface between QCD spin physics and the famous axial U(1) problem of QCD (eta and etaprime meson physics) is also highlighted. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Introduction (159 KB). Contents: Spin Experiments and Data; Dispersion Relations and Spin Sum Rules; g 1 Spin Sum Rules; Fixed Poles; The Axial Anomaly, Gluon topology and g (0) A; Chiral Symmetry and Axial U(1) Dynamics; QCD Inspired Models of the Proton Spin Problem; The Spin-Flavour Structure of the Proton; QCD Fits to g 1 Data; Polarized Quark Distributions; Polarized Glue o g(x, Q 2 ); Transversity; Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering and Exclusive Processes; Polarized Photon Structure Functions; Conclusions and Open Questions: How Does the Proton Spin?. Readership: Academics, as well as physicists working on particle and nuclear physics at the interface of theory and experiment.

Book excerpt: The history of spin in general, and of the nucleon spin structure in particular, has been full of surprises. For the past 25 years deep inelastic lepton scattering has been studied to determine the carriers of the nucleon spin. However, it was realized only recently that a full understanding of the nucleon spin will also require detailed information on the helicity structure in the resonance region, i.e. in the realm of nonperturbative QCD.This volume gives a status report on the spin structure in the nucleon resonance region, focusing on: new experimental results from SLAC and HERMES; a first glance at the JLab experiments to map out the spin structure functions at low and intermediate four-momentum transfers; the pioneering experiment at MAMI (Mainz) to determine the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule for real photons; and recent theoretical concepts and investigations to describe the spin structure in the frameworks of higher twist expansion, phenomenological models and chiral perturbation theory.

Book excerpt: Deep inelastic scattering experiments to measure the proton spin- dependent structure function were first pioneered in SLAC experiments in the 1970's (1). These early experiments established the existence of large asymmetries in the spin structure of the proton predicted by the parton model. Despite the success, the results did not appear to be revealing new fundamental insights into the models. The experiments were, moreover, difficult, and SLAC's interest in constructing a linear collider to study the Z0 boson ended the program to study in more detail the nucleon spin-dependent structure functions. In May of this year, SLAC reopened the study of this field of physics by approving experiment E142--an experiment to measure the neutron spin-dependent structure function. In this report, I describe the goals of experiment E142 and how we hope to achieve them.

Book excerpt: The spin physics program in Jefferson Lab's Hall C concentrates on high precision and high resolution studies of the nucleon spin structure that can be extracted from inclusive polarized scattering experiments. The Resonances Spin Structure - RSS experiment has measured nucleon spin structure functions in the resonances region at an intermediate four-momentum transfer Q2 ~ 1.3 GeV2. The polarized target in Hall C could be polarized longitudinally and transversely, allowing extraction of both spin-dependent structure functions g1 and g2. Results on proton and deuteron spin asymmetries A1 and A2, and spin structure functions g1 and g2, are presented here.

Book excerpt: The authors present results from SLAC experiments E142 and E143 for the spin dependent structure functions of the proton g[sub 1][sup p](x, Q[sup 2]) and neutron g[sub 1][sup n](x, Q[sup 2]) measured in deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons from a polarized target. Experiment E142 measures[integral][sub 0][sup 1] g[sub 1][sup n](x)dx=[minus]0.022[+-] 0.011 atQ[sup 2]= 2 (GeV/c)[sup 2] using a polarized[sup 3]He target. Experiment E143 measures[integral][sub 0][sup 1] g[sub 1][sup p](x)dx= 0.129[+-] 0.011 atQ[sup 2]= 3 (GeV/c)[sup 2] using a polarized NH[sub 3] target. These results are combined at Q[sup 2]= 3 (GeV/c)[sup 2] to yield[integral][sub 0][sup 1][g[sub 1][sup p](x)[minus] g[sub 1][sup n](x)]dx= 0.151[+-] 0.015. The Bjorken sum rule predicts 0.171[+-] 0.008.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive survey of the most recent results from the field of quark-gluon structure of the nucleon, in particular how the spin of the nucleon is shared by its constituents. After very intriguing results from CERN and SLAC at the end of the 1980s, the last decade has seen a set of second-generation experiments at high energy accelerators that have yielded precise information on the solution of the 'Spin Crisis' - as well as opening up new questions. The articles are written by experts from the leading collaboration and theory groups as well as providing an expert summary of the state of the art, the book points the way to future research directions. Its main focus is on semi-inclusive and exclusive measurements of deep inelastic lepton scattering, which enables for the first time the determination of the flavor-separated quark spin distributions. Future developments on generalized parton distributions and their interpretation as well as the transverse spin structure are also covered. An indispensable volume for all working in hadronic physics.

Book excerpt: This research work deals with spin dependent proton, neutron as well as deuteron structure functions determined from deep inelastic scattering experiments approximated for low-x region. Structure functions are calculated from complete, particular and unique solutions of spin dependent GLDAP evolution equations which are deduced from perturbative quantum chromodynamics. t and x-evolutions of structure functions at low-x region are predicted. Theoretical predictions are compared with experimental data.

Book excerpt: Jefferson Lab have made significant contributions to improve our knowledge of the longitudinal spin structure by measuring polarized structure functions, g1 and g2, down to Q2 = 0.02 GeV2. The low Q2 data is especially useful in testing the Chiral Perturbation theory (cPT) calculations. The spin-dependent sum rules and the spin polarizabilities, constructed from the moments of g1 and g2, provide an important tool to study the longitudinal spin structure. We will present an overview of the experimental program to measure these structure functions at Jefferson Lab, and present some recent results on the neutron polarizabilities, proton g1 at low Q2, and proton and neutron d2 measurement. In addition to this, we will discuss the transverse spin structure of the nucleon which can be accessed using chiral-odd transversity distribution (h1), and show some results from measurements done on polarized 3He target in Hall A.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of an International Conference on "Spin and Isospin in Nuclear Interactions", which was held in Telluride, Colorado USA, 11-15 March 1991. This was the fifth in a series of conferences held in Telluride every three years since 1979. In attendance at the conference were just under 100 participants, representing a total of 43 institutes from 12 different countries. In keeping with previous Telluride conferences, the role of spin and isospin degrees of freedom in both nuclear structure and nuclear interactions remained an important theme. Topics covered included new results on the spin- and isospin-dependent terms in the free and effective nucleon-nucleon interaction, Gamow-Teller excitations, charge and spin exchange with hadronic probes, and spin measurements with leptonic probes. Recent progress in the development of polarized sources, polarized targets, and po larimetry was also discussed, as were applications to neutrino physics and astrophysics. Whereas earlier Telluride conferences had dealt primarily with nucleon-nucleus inter actions, this meeting included extensive discussions on the role of spin and flavor in particle interactions, and on ways of "bridging the gap" between concepts usually as sociated with particle physics and the domain of more conventional nuclear physics. The conference consisted of morning and evening scientific sessions, leaving the afternoons free for informal discussions, recreation, and enjoyment of the scenic beauty of the Telluride area. In addition to the invited talks, time was allotted for contributed talks on new results.
