Book excerpt: While perturbative QCD methods fully describe experimental results at high energies, and chiral perturbation theory is the low energy effective theory of the strong interactions, a form of duality is observed connecting these two regimes. In these intermediate kinematics, a wide variety of reactions are observed which can be described simultaneously by single particle (quark) scattering, and by exclusive resonance (hadron) scattering. The contributions in this proceedings volume discuss recent and existing results, and aim to foster current and future research, investigating the phenomenon of quark-hadron duality. This unique volume contains research work by scientists from different arenas of hadronic physics, dealing with different manifestations of quark-hadron duality. Sample Chapter(s). Book excerpt: Inclusive electron-nucleon scattering data from Jefferson Lab's Hall B has been analyzed to test quark-hadron duality for the polarized structure function g1(x, Q{sup 2}) over a Q{sup 2} range from 0.2 to 3.5 GeV{sup 2}/c{sup 2}. Incident polarized electron beam energies of 1.6 and 5.7 GeV were scattered by polarized {sup 15}NH{sub 3} and {sup 15}ND{sub 3} targets. The measurements of g1(x, Q{sup 2}) in the resonance region appear to be equivalent to a fit of g1(x, Q{sup 2}) in the deep inelastic scattering region at high Q{sup 2}. A quantitative test comparing the ratio of first moment in the resonance region to the first moment in the deep inelastic region is consistent with unity when Q{sup 2}> 2.0 GeV{sup 2}/c{sup 2} but substantially departs from unity when Q{sup 2}

Book excerpt: We present experimental results of the first high-precision test of quark-hadron duality in the spin-structure function g_1 of the neutron and $^3$He using a polarized 3He target in the four-momentum-transfer-squared range from 0.7 to 4.0 (GeV/c)^2. Global duality is observed for the spin-structure function g_1 down to at least Q^2 = 1.8 (GeV/c)^2 in both targets. We have also formed the photon-nucleon asymmetry A_1 in the resonance region for 3He and found no strong Q^2-dependence above 2.2 (GeV/c)^2.

Book excerpt: The duality between partonic and hadronic descriptions of physical phenomena is one of the most remarkable features of strong interaction physics. A classic example of this is in electron-nucleon scattering, in which low-energy cross sections, when averaged over appropriate energy intervals, are found to exhibit the scaling behavior expected from perturbative QCD. We present a comprehensive review of data on structure functions in the resonance region, from which the global and local aspects of duality are quantified, including its flavor, spin and nuclear medium dependence. To interpret the experimental findings, we discuss various theoretical approaches which have been developed to understand the microscopic origins of quark-hadron duality in QCD. Examples from other reactions are used to place duality in a broader context, and future experimental and theoretical challenges are identified.

Book excerpt: One of the biggest challenges in the study of the nucleon structure is the understanding of the transition from partonic degrees of freedom to hadronic degrees of freedom. In 1970, Bloom and Gilman noticed that structure function data taken at SLAC in the resonance region average to the scaling curve of deep inelastic scattering (DIS). Early theoretical interpretations suggested that these two very different regimes can be linked under the condition that the quark-gluon and quark-quark interactions are suppressed. Substantial efforts are ongoing to investigate this phenomenon both experimentally and theoretically. Quark-hadron duality has been confirmed for the unpolarized structure function F2 of the proton and the deuteron using data from the experimental Hall C at Jefferson Lab (JLab). Indications of duality have been seen for the proton polarized structure function g1 and the virtual photon asymmetry A1 at JLab Hall B and HERMES. Because of the different resonance behavior, it is expected that the onset of duality for the neutron will happen at lower momentum transfer than for the proton. Now that precise spin structure data in the DIS region are available at large x, data in the resonance region are greatly needed in order to test duality in spin-dependent structure functions. The goal of experiment E01-012 was to provide such data on the neutron (3He) in the moderate momentum transfer (Q2) region, 1.0

Book excerpt: The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) experiment BONuS used a novel spectator-tagging technique to measure the inclusive electron-free neutron scattering cross section and extract the F2 structure function. This data was used to reconstruct moments of F2 in the three prominent resonance region and the moments integrated over the entire resonance region. Comparisons of the experimental results with moments obtained from global parton distribution function parametrization seem to suggest that the quark-hadron duality hypothesis holds locally for the neutron in the second and third resonance regions down to Q2 of 1 GeV2; with up to 20% violations observed in the first resonance region.

The goal of experiment E01-012 was to provide such data on the neutron (3He) in the moderate momentum transfer (Q2) region, 1.0 Qsup2/sup 4.0 (GeV/csup2/sup), where duality is expected to hold. The experiment ran successfully in early 2003 at Jefferson Lab in Hall B. It was an inclusive measurement of longitudinally polarized electrons scattering from a longitudinally or transversely polarized sup3/supHe target. Asymmetries and cross section differences were measured in order to extract the sup3/supHe spin structure function gsub1/sub and virtual photon asymmetry Asub1/sub in the resonance region. A test of quark-hadron duality has then been performed for the sup3/supHe and neutron structure functions. The study of spin duality for the neutron will provide a better understanding of the mechanism of the strong interaction. Moreover, if duality is well understood, our resonance data will bring information on the high x region where theoretical predictions for A

Here, by combining recent parity-violating electron-deuteron scattering data with our current understanding of parton distribution functions, the author shows that one can limit this model dependence. The resulting construction is a robust model of the γγ and γZ structure functions that can also be used to study a variety of low-energy phenomena. Two such cases are discussed in this work, namely, the nucleon’s electromagnetic polarizabilities and quark-hadron duality. By using phenomenological information to constrain the input structure functions, this important but previously poorly understood radiative correction is determined at the kinematics of the parity-violating experiment, QWEAK, to a degree of precision more than twice that of the previous best estimate. A detailed investigation into available parametrizations of the electromagnetic and interference cross-sections indicates that earlier analyses suffered from the inability to correctly quantify their model dependence.

Book excerpt: In this study, we examine the interference $\gamma Z$ box corrections to parity-violating elastic electron-proton scattering in the light of the recent observation of quark-hadron duality in parity-violating deep-inelastic scattering from the deuteron at low $Q^2$. Using the similarity of electromagnetic and $\gamma Z$ structure function moments and those extracted from leading twist parton distributions down to $Q^2 \approx 1$~GeV$^2$, we find that duality constrains the $\gamma Z$ box correction to $\Re \square_{\gamma Z}^V = (5.4 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-3}$ at the kinematics of the Q-weak experiment. Within the same model we also provide estimates of the $\gamma Z$ corrections for future experiments, such as MOLLER at Jefferson Lab and MESA at Mainz.

Duality is observed when the smooth scaling curve at high momentum transfer is an average over the resonance bumps at lower momentum transfer, but at the same value of scaling variable x. Signs of quark-hadron duality for the spin Dependant structure function g1 of the proton has been recently reported by the Hermes collaboration. Experimental Halls A, B and C at Jefferson lab have recently measured spin structure functions in the resonance region for the proton and the neutron. Data from these experiments combined with Deep-Inelastic-Scattering data provide a precision test of quark-hadron duality predictions for spin structure functions for both the proton and the neutron. This will be one of the first precision tests of spin and flavor dependence of quark-hadron duality.

Duality is observed when, at the same value of scaling variable x{sub bj}, the smooth scaling curve at high momentum transfer becomes an average over the resonances at lower momentum transfer. Jefferson Lab experiment 01-012 used the polarized 3He target in Hall A for an extraction of the neutron spin structure function g1(superscript n) and the virtual photon asymmetry A1(superscript n) in the resonance region over a Q2 range from 1.0 to 4.0 (GeV/c)2. Data from E01-012 combined with Deep Inelastic Scattering data will provide a test of quark-hadron duality predictions for g1(superscript n) and A1(superscript n). This will be one of the first tests of the spin and flavor dependence of quark-hadron duality. The demonstration of duality for spin structure functions will enable us to use the resonance data to study the nucleon spin structure in the large x{sub bj} region.
