Book excerpt: The results of the investigation suggest that at transonic speeds and at small angles of attack the calculation of all aerodynamic characteristics of slender, three-dimensional shapes can be made by use of transonic slender-body theory when the pressures on the equivalent body of revolution are Imown, either by experiment, or by an adequate nonlinear theory. From transonic slender-body theory it is deduced that the slenderness required for this application is the same as that required for the successful application of the transonic area rule.

Book excerpt: In 1975 the U.S. Air Force and the Federal Republic of Germany signed a Data Exchange Agreement numbered AF-75-G-7440 entitled 'Viscous and Interacting Flow Fields.' The purpose was to exchange data in the area of boundary layer research. It includes both experimental and theoretical boundary layer research at speeds from subsonic to hypersonic Mach numbers in the presence of laminar, transitional, and turbulent boundary layers. The main effort in recent years has been on turbulent boundary layers, both attached and separated in the presence of such parameters as pressure gradients, wall temperature, surface roughness, etc. In the United States the research was conducted in various Department of Defense, NASA, aircraft corporations, and various university laboratories. In the Federal Republic of Germany it was carried out within the various DFVLR, industrial, and university research centers.

This book was released on 1958 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of test flights was conducted by the U. S. Navy over a 3-year period to evaluate the effects of icing on the operation of the ZFG-2 airship. In supercooled clouds, ice formed only on the forward edges of small protuberances and wires and presented no serious hazard to operation. Ice secretions of the glaze type which occurred in conditions described as freezing drizzle adversely affected various components to a somewhat greater extent. The results indicated a need for protection of certain components such as antennas, propellers, ad certain parts of the control system.

Book Synopsis A Study of the Simulation of Flow with Free-stream Mach Number 1 in a Choked Wind Tunnel by : John R. Spreiter

This book was released on 1960 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: The degree to which experimental results obtained under choking conditions in a wind tunnel with solid walls simulate those associated with an unbounded flow with free-stream Mach number 1 is investigated for the cases of two-dimensional and axisymmetric flows. It is found that a close resemblance does indeed exist in the vicinity of the body, and that the results obtained in this way are generally at least as accurate as those obtained in a transonic wind tunnel with partly open test section. Some of the results indicate, however, that substantial interference effects, particularly those of the wave reflection type, may be encountered under certain conditions, both in choked wind tunnels and in transonic wind tunnels, and that the reduction of these interference effects to acceptable limits may require the use of models of unusually small size.
