Book excerpt: This book highlights some recent advances in interfacial research in the fields of fluid mechanics and materials science at the beginning of the twenty-first century. It is an extension of the presentations made during the conference “Interfaces for the 21st Century,” held on August 16-18, 1999, in Monterey, California. It includes papers by sixteen renowned experts in the field of interfacial mechanics, abstracts contributed by research scientists, and a summary of a panel discussion on future research directions. The book covers experimental and theoretical approaches, with the unifying philosophy being the investigation of new techniques for modeling the dynamics of interfaces. A number of new and exciting solution methods and experimental studies, as well as the physical problems that initiated them, are presented.

Book excerpt: Despite factoring in countless natural, biological, and industrial processes, fixed attention on the singular attributes and behavior of fluids near or at interfaces has not received enough attention in the surface science literature. Liquid Interfacial Systems assembles and analyzes concepts and findings as an inclusive summation of fluid-fluid interfacial phenomena. This book covers excitation, stabilization, and suppression of instability at liquid interfaces. From the influential original research and scholarship of leaders in the discipline comes a volume to impart and explain definitions, scales, governing equations, and boundary conditions used in liquid interfacial system research.

It covers the folowing questions: when and where inclusions form. how they change, how to prepare material and make microthermometric measurementsl, how to interpret these data, and what has been found in applications of fluid-inclusion studies to each of a series of different geologic environments. This book also attempts to discuss the many applications of fluid inclusions to the study of and understanding of geologic processes and the geologic environments in which they acted.

Book excerpt: This thesis is comprised of three parts, focusing on the dynamics of miscible liquid interfaces, the dynamics of ultra-low surface tension liquid interfaces, and the spreading of "rinsing" liquids across rotating, horizontal substrates. Miscible liquids commonly contact one another in natural and technological situations, often as one liquid suspended within another or in the proximity of a solid substrate. A systematic experimental study of the shape evolution of pendant and sessile droplets immersed in miscible environments was conducted. We present experimental findings that have distinctly different shape evolution and time-dependent dynamics from droplets present in immiscible environments, which have been reported previously. A complementary numerical approach to compute the concentration and velocity fields of these systems using a simplified set of governing equations is paired with our experimental findings. Additionally, a study of droplets freely rising through a miscible, more viscous liquid was conducted. We report observations of droplets of water rising through glycerol and corn syrup. A class of ultra-low surface tension liquids are aqueous two-phase solutions, which form by the phase separation of different polymers within an aqueous solution when a critical threshold in concentration of polymer is exceeded. We investigate two configurations of water-water emulsions: a sessile drop, and a drop at a planar liquid-liquid interface of an aqueous two-phase solution. A particular class of liquids that spread across solid surfaces are "rinsing" liquids. When applied to a rotating substrate, the dynamics of rinsing liquids are interesting fundamentally in the interaction of several classic modes of spreading and industrially in a variety of cleaning applications, such as in the manufacturing of silicon wafers. An investigation of the spreading of a rinsing liquid across a horizontal, rotating hydrophilic substrate was conducted. We present experimental findings of the spreading radius of the rinsing liquid, in which we observed four distinct growth rates across the parameter space and use lubrication theory to explain the phenomena.

Solidification is therefore one of the most important phase transformation in daily human life. Solidification is the transition from liquid to solid state of matter. The conditions under which material is transformed determines the physical and chemical properties of the as-solidified body. The processes involved, like nucleation and crystal growth, are governed by heat and mass transport. Convection and undercooling provide additional processing parameters to tune the solidification process and to control solid material performance from the very beginning of the production chain. To develop a predictive capability for efficient materials production the processes involved in solidification have to be understood in detail. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the solidification of metallic melts processed and undercooled in a containerless manner by drop tube, electromagnetic and electrostatic levitation, and experiments in reduced gravity. The experiments are accompanied by model calculations on the influence of thermodynamic and hydrodynamic conditions that control selection of nucleation mechanisms and modify crystal growth development throughout the solidification process.

Book excerpt: The motion of a liquid over a solid surface is a process that happens in natural phenomena and everyday life situations, therefore its understanding is of great importance. The motion of the liquid is limited by the dynamics of the solid-liquid-vapor contact line. In this thesis, the effect that the liquid composition has over moving contact lines is studied, in particular when surface tension gradients, driven by compositional gradients, are present. The objective is to get insights of the governing mechanisms. The model system is Marangoni-contracted drops. The wetting behavior is investi...
