Book excerpt: During a loss of coolant accident in a pressurised water reactor, emergency core cooling water is introduced via the downcomer annulus. The water may have to penetrate or overcome steam formed in the vessel due to the depressurisation. A typical counter-current flow situation can be created and dependent on the relative flow rates water may be prevented from reaching the reactor core with serious consequences. This, thesis considers the events leading up to this occurrence in a vertical, 54.75 mm diameter, 1 m long, stainless steel tube, to represent and provide a basic understanding of the situation occurring during a loss of coolant accident. Results are presented for air-water and steam-water flows with emphasis on the experimental and theoretical studies of the steam-water flow situation where direct contact heat transfer occurs. The air-water flooding data are shown to be well represented by a Wallis type flooding correlation. The steam-water flooding data are found to lie above the corresponding air-water data with their characteristic dependent on the water inlet subcooling. The percentage of the air/steam flow extracted with the water flow at the bottom porous sinter was found to exert a negative effect on the flooding phenomena. A theoretical model was developed to predict the liquid film thickness along the tube, and agreement with the experimental results demonstrated. A second theoretical model was developed to evaluate the temperature across the liquid film and along the test tube and from this model, the effective turbulent diffusivity was evaluated, leading to an estimate of the turbulent viscosity of the film under conditions in which substantial condensation took place. A semi-empirical model based on a linear stability analysis of a uniform liquid film and a counter-current flow of steam, was developed and modified for accelerating film flows. This model is shown to be capable of dealing with the steam-water flooding situation since reasonable agreement with the air-water flooding data is obtained. A modified Wallis type flooding correlation based on the experimental data, and accounting for non-equilibrium effect on flooding, is presented and discussed. A visualisation technique was developed and used to determine the flooding location in the section.
Book Synopsis Advances in Fluid Dynamics with emphasis on Multiphase and Complex Flow by : S. Hernández
Download or read book Advances in Fluid Dynamics with emphasis on Multiphase and Complex Flow written by S. Hernández and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of fluid mechanics is vast and has numerous and diverse applications. Presented papers from the 11th International Conference on Advances in Fluid Dynamics with emphasis on Multiphase and Complex Flow are contained in this book and cover a wide range of topics, including basic formulations and their computer modelling as well as the relationship between experimental and analytical results. Innovation in fluid-structure approaches including emerging applications as energy harvesting systems, studies of turbulent flows at high Reynold number, or subsonic and hypersonic flows are also among the topics covered. The emphasis placed on multiphase flow in the included research works is due to the fact that fluid dynamics processes in nature are predominantly multi-phased, i.e. involving more than one phase of a component such as liquid, gas or plasma. The range of related problems of interest is vast: astrophysics, biology, geophysics, atmospheric processes, and a large variety of engineering applications. Multiphase fluid dynamics are generating a great deal of interest, leading to many notable advances in experimental, analytical, and numerical studies in this area. While progress is continuing in all three categories, advances in numerical solutions are likely the most conspicuous, owing to the continuing improvements in computer power and the software tools available to researchers. Progress in numerical methods has not only allowed for the solution of many practical problems but also helped to improve our understanding of the physics involved. Many unresolved issues are inherent in the very definition of multiphase flow, where it is necessary to consider coupled processes on multiple scales, as well as the interplay of a wide variety of relevant physical phenomena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: to increase the use of direct contact processes, the National Science Foundation sup ported a workshop on direct contact heat transfer at the Solar Energy Research Insti tute in the summer of 1985. We served as organizers for this workshop, which em phasized an area of thermal engineering that, in our opinion, has great promise for the future, but has not yet reached the point of wide-spread commercial application. Hence, a summary of the state of knowledge at this point is timely. The workshop had a dual objective: 1. To summarize the current state of knowledge in such a form that industrial practi tioners can make use of the available information. 2. To indicate the research and development needed to advance the state-of-the-art, indicating not only what kind of research is needed, but also the industrial poten tial that could be realized if the information to be obtained through the proposed research activities were available.

This book was released on 1984 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental results of investigating steam condensation on water in the presence of (noncondensable) inert gases at low temperatures and pressures relevant to open-cycle ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) systems are reported. Seven different condenser configurations were tested. The experimental data are correlated using a liquid flow fraction and a vent fraction to yield simple relationships of condenser performance over a wide range of test donditions. Performance maps and envelopes are provided for evaluating the relative merits of tested configurations.

Book Synopsis An Experimental Study of Steam Condensation on a Single Horizontal Tube by : Derry Thomas Pence
Download or read book An Experimental Study of Steam Condensation on a Single Horizontal Tube written by Derry Thomas Pence and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental test facility capable of investigating plain and enhanced horizontal tubes was built. The test facility consists of an electric boiler, test condenser and associated piping for steam, condensate and cooling water. Performance of the test condenser was checked at a steam pressure of 3 psia with cooling water velocities ranging from 5 to 25 ft/sec. Condensation data was obtained for a single, 0.625 inch outside diameter, 90-10 copper-nickel tube in a simualted tube bundle to determine the overall, inside and outside heat transfer coefficients. The overall heat transfer coefficient was determined directly from experimental data, and the Wilson Plot technique was used to determine the inside and outside heat transfer coefficients. The experimentally obtained values for the inside heat transfer coefficient are within 5 percent of the theoretical values predicted by the Sieder-Tate equation. The experimental values obtained for the outside heat transfer coefficient are within 8 percent of the theoretical values predicted by the Nusselt equation. (Author).
