Book excerpt: In this dissertation measurements on the surface impedance of superconducting niobium, tantalum, and a 30 at% niobium-70 at% tantalum alloy are reported. The measurements were made on X-band mode cavities at a nominal frequency of 8.6 GHz. The surface resistance and the change of surface reactance for the three materials were measured from 1.3 K up to their respective transition temperatures. These data were compared to computer calculations based on the Mattis-Bardeen expressions for the surface resistance and reactance of superconductors. Evidence is also presented concerning the effect of thermal expansion of niobium on the resonant frequency of an X-band cavity as a function of temperature below 2K. The influence of trapped magnetic flux on the microwave surface resistance and reactance of niobium is also reported. (Modified author abstract).

Book Synopsis Handbook of Applied Superconductivity, Volume 2 by : B Seeber
Download or read book Handbook of Applied Superconductivity, Volume 2 written by B Seeber and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Applied Superconductivity, Two-Volume Set covers all important aspects of applied superconductivity and the supporting low-temperature technologies. The handbook clearly demonstrates the capabilities of superconducting technologies and illustrates how to implement these technologies in new areas of academic and industrial research and development. Volume One provides an introduction to the theoretical background of both low and high Tc superconductivity, followed by details of the basic hardware such as wires, tapes, and cables used in applications of superconductivity and the necessary supporting science and technology. Theoretical discussions are in most cases followed by examples of real designs, fabrication techniques, and practical instrumentation guidance. A final chapter examines materials properties at low temperatures. Volume Two provides examples of current and future applications of superconductivity. It covers medical systems for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), high field magnets for research, superconducting magnets for accelerators, industrial systems for magnetic separation, and transportation systems. The final chapters look to future applications in power and superconducting electronics. With fully referenced, peer-refereed contributions from experts in various fields, this two-volume work is an essential reference for a wide range of scientists and engineers in academic and industrial research and development environments.

Book Synopsis Exploring the Quantum by : Serge Haroche
Download or read book Exploring the Quantum written by Serge Haroche and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-08-11 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The counter-intuitive aspects of quantum physics have been long illustrated by thought experiments, from Einstein's photon box to Schrödinger's cat. These experiments have now become real, with single particles - electrons, atoms, or photons - directly unveiling the strange features of the quantum. State superpositions, entanglement and complementarity define a novel quantum logic which can be harnessed for information processing, raising great hopes for applications. This book describes a class of such thought experiments made real. Juggling with atoms and photons confined in cavities, ions or cold atoms in traps, is here an incentive to shed a new light on the basic concepts of quantum physics. Measurement processes and decoherence at the quantum-classical boundary are highlighted. This volume, which combines theory and experiments, will be of interest to students in quantum physics, teachers seeking illustrations for their lectures and new problem sets, researchers in quantum optics and quantum information.
