Book excerpt: The great stumbling block in the quest for fusion power using magnetic confinement devices is anomalous transport. It is conjectured that turbulent plasma fluctuations may be responsible for the degraded energy confinement observed in experiments. There exists a clear need for more detailed experimental studies of plasma microturbulence. We have started a set of experiments to measure electron temperature and density fluctuations using electron cyclotron emission (ECE). The ECE systems will employ auto-correlation and cross-correlation techniques to measure radiation from the Advanced Toroidal Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and also from the Texas Experimental Tokamak (TEXT) at the University of Texas. This set of experiments on a stellerator and a tokamak will allow a unique comparative study of the fluctuation physics in the two different magnetic configurations. This work is in support of the United States Department of Energy Tokamak Transport Initiative and involves a collaborative effort between Auburn University, Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Texas at Austin and ORNL. 3 refs.

Beam-heated plasmas with {bar n}{sub e} of 102° m{sup -3} and [tau]{sub E}* of ≈ 20 ms have been achieved. Thermal collapse of the plasmas is mitigated by wall conditioning and particle fueling. Confinement time scales positively with density and magnetic field, offsetting deterioration with power. Results fit the Large Helical Device (LHD) scaling and the drift wave turbulence scaling. Bootstrap currents observed during electron cyclotron heating agree with neoclassical theory in magnitude and parameter dependences. Fast reciprocating Langmuir probe measurements show that edge fluctuations in ATF have many similarities to those in the Texas Experimental Tokamak (TEXT). The location of {tilde B} instabilities has shifted outward in radius, consistent with the broader pressure profiles. 14 refs., 6 figs.

Book excerpt: Plasma edge feedback experiments on the Texas Experimental Tokamak (TEXT) have been successful in controlling the edge plasma potential fluctuation level. The feedback wave-launcher, consisting of electrostatic probes located in the shadow of the limiter, is driven by the local edge potential fluctuations. In general, the edge potential fluctuations are modified in a broad frequency band. Moreover, it is observed that the potential fluctuations can be reduced ((less-than or equal to)100 kHz) without enhancing other modes, or excited (10 to 12 kHz), depending on the phase difference between the driver and the launcher signal, and gain of the system. This turbulence modification is achieved not only locally but also halfway around the torus and has about 2 cm of poloidal extent. Experiments on the characterization of the global plasma parameters with the edge feedback are discussed. Effects of the edge feedback on the estimated fluctuation-induced radial particle flux as well as on the local plasma parameters are presented.

Book excerpt: The absorption of 60 GHz electron cyclotron waves, with the extraordinary mode and an oblique angle of propagation, has been investigated in the PLT tokamak in the regime of down-shifted frequencies. The production of energetic electrons, with energies of up to 300 to 400 keV, peaks at values of toroidal field (approx. =29 kG) for which the wave frequency is significantly smaller than the electron cyclotron frequency in the whole plasma region. The observations are consistent with the predictions of the relativistic theory of electron cyclotron damping at down-shifted frequency. Existing rf sources make this process a viable method for assisting the current ramp-up, and for heating the plasma of present large tokamaks.
