Book excerpt: "Tatiana Reinoza examines how geography, immigration, and art all converged as deepening interests for Latinx graphic artists, specifically those working in different forms of printmaking. By highlighting the work of four artists, based out of four distinct studios in East LA, Tempe, Austin, and East Harlem, she is able to uncover how their work these past three decades has transcended the more defined lines of scholarship that focus on specific ethnic groups (Chicano, Puerto Rican, etc.). She makes a case for how spatial projects allow for a more collective critique of anti-immigrant discourse, visualize immigrant lives, and articulate the ways in which printmaking has been historically complicit in the colonizing of the Americas"--

Book excerpt: The design of mechanical components for various engineering applications requires the understanding of stress distribution in the materials. The need of determining the nature of stress distribution on the components can be achieved with experimental techniques. Applications and Techniques for Experimental Stress Analysis is a timely research publication that examines how experimental stress analysis supports the development and validation of analytical and numerical models, the progress of phenomenological concepts, the measurement and control of system parameters under working conditions, and identification of sources of failure or malfunction. Highlighting a range of topics such as deformation, strain measurement, and element analysis, this book is essential for mechanical engineers, civil engineers, designers, aerospace engineers, researchers, industry professionals, academicians, and students.

Book excerpt: Screen printing is simple enough for a child or beginner, but it is also a favorite printing process of experienced artists and craftspeople. It allows for a wide range of creative possibilities. It is less inhibiting than other printing processes. And, contrary to most other methods of printing, it does not require the user to make the mental translations of a reversed image. The extreme versatility of the medium has opened completely new possibilities for design and expression in both serigraphy (art prints) and textile designs. The Schwalbachs' book clearly explains how to employ silk-screen printing in both of these areas: producing a serigraph and making a fabric print. It also sets down all of the steps involved in constructing a printing board and frame, keying the screen, preparing inks or dyes, and printing the color runs — plus a list of various problems that might turn up and their solutions. Other facets discussed include the best ways of cleaning up, handling the completed print, and working with different resists — paper, blockout, washout, photo-emulsion. There is even a special print project for the beginner, using a cardboard frame and school tempera paint. Nearly 200 diagrams and photographs, including 19 in full color, make a clear text even clearer and offer examples of completed prints. The Schwalbachs taught silk-screen printing for many years at the University of Wisconsin. They know how to communicate the essence of this craft in the best manner possible. With their book as a guide, anyone can quickly master the techniques of silk-screening printing.

Book excerpt: Graphic designers who wish to work with print finishes like blind embossing and phosphorescent ink constantly face the same problem: there are no compelling examples of the available techniques. They must either turn to existing books, which only present them in photographs and make it impossible to experience their tactile qualities, or to samples in advertising brochures put out by individual printing presses, which are so focused on the technology that their visual and haptic appeal is lost. This is where extra comes in: it uses sensuously experienced examples to present the most important finishing techniques practically and theoretically, in variants and experimental combinations. Thirty internationally renowned designers created pages especially for this book as a basis for explaining the special design and technical features of each technique, with an in-depth exploration of its possible uses. Additional articles deal with general issues such as planning and costing a finish or its mode of operation. With its large amount of information, its easy-to-navigate structure, and a glossary, this book is an indispensable reference work on print finishing. At the same time, its experimental character and high-quality design make it a source of inspiration for everyone with an interest in the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology provides an overview of the history and theory of Chicano/a art from the 1960s to the present, emphasizing the debates and vocabularies that have played key roles in its conceptualization. In Chicano and Chicana Art—which includes many of Chicano/a art's landmark and foundational texts and manifestos—artists, curators, and cultural critics trace the development of Chicano/a art from its early role in the Chicano civil rights movement to its mainstream acceptance in American art institutions. Throughout this teaching-oriented volume they address a number of themes, including the politics of border life, public art practices such as posters and murals, and feminist and queer artists' figurations of Chicano/a bodies. They also chart the multiple cultural and artistic influences—from American graffiti and Mexican pre-Columbian spirituality to pop art and modernism—that have informed Chicano/a art's practice. Book excerpt: "Self Help Graphics at Fifty celebrates the ongoing legacy of an institution which had profound aesthetic, economic, and political impact on the formation of Chicanx and Latinx art in the United States. Officially launched in 1973 during the Chicano Movement by Italian-American Franciscan nun and artist Sister Karen Boccalero and queer Mexican artists Carlos Bueno and Antonio Ibaänez, Self Help Graphics served on the cultural front of the movement. The institution's commitments to art, dignity for all, and pride in ethnic heritage appear in every aspect of programming, including the Dâia de los Muertos festival; the Barrio Mobile Art Studio, which brings art education to underserved schools; and the printmaking program, which offers an accessible medium infused with activist aims. Looking at the multiple genealogies of art that intersect in East Los Angeles, Self Help Graphics at Fifty bears witness to the organization's influential role in US and global art histories"--

Book excerpt: Guy Grey-Smith (1916-1981) remains one of the most important Australian artists of his generation. His artwork has been collected by every major public gallery in the country. Based in Western Australia, Grey-Smith exhibited nationally, participated in key international exhibitions, received Queens Honors Awards, and was a spirited contributor and active participant in the national arts scene. Granted access for the first time to Guy Grey-Smith's notebooks, war-time sketches, correspondence, and estate, author Andrew Gaynor draws a fascinating portrait of a country boy whose life was first liberated, then stalled, by the brutality of war. Teaching himself to draw while interned in prisoner of war camps, Grey-Smith went on to create some of the most enduring and powerful images of the Australian landscape, redolent with color, texture, and an unmistakable life force. He studied under the modernist sculptor Henry Moore at the Chelsea School of Art, London. Although primarily a painter, Grey-Smith also produced sculptures, pen and ink drawings, etchings, and wood blocks. This is the first book about this outstanding Australian artist and his remarkable 35-year career.
