This book was released on 1970 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phase relationships in the Ti-V-C system were experimentally investigated by means of X-ray, melting point, DTA, and metallographic methods on heat-treated and melted specimens, and a phase from 1400C through the melting range established. The solid state equilibria are characterized by the monocarbide phases, and a limited Ti-exchange in V2C (15 At. % at 1400C); a wide two-phase equilibrium is formed between the carbon-deficient monocarbide solid solution and the metal phase. The V2C-solid solution is terminated by a three-phase equilibrium, V2C + (V, Ti)C1-x + (V, Ti)-ss, in the ternary. Four isothermal reactions occur in the system, of which three correspond to pseudobinary eutectic reactions, and the fourth to a ternary eutectic between metal, subcarbide, and monocarbide. The monocarbide solid solution has a minimum melting point of 2625C at a composition Ti-V-C (6-50-44 At.%). (Author).

Book excerpt: The ternary alloy systems Ti-Nb-C, Ti-Ta-C, and Ti-Mo-C were investigated by means of X-ray, melting point, DTA, and metallographic techniques and phase diagrams for all three systems from 1500C through the melting range were established. The solid state phase relationships in all three systems are similar. The cubic monocarbides are completely miscible, whereas the subcarbides, Nb(Ta, Mo)C2 show limited solubility and are terminated by three-phase equilibria Me + Me2C + MeC1-x in the ternary. The sublattice order- disorder transition in the subcarbides are lowered by titanium substitutions. The monocarbide solutions in all three systems show a regular melting behavior. The phase relationships of the three systems are discussed and the differences in particular equilibria related to the thermodynamic properties of the phases in the boundary systems.

Book excerpt: The thermodynamic fundamentals relating phase equilibria in binary and ternary systems to the thermodynamic properties of the phases are reviewed and discussed. Considered in detail are partition equilibria in ternary systems and the role of the three-phase equilibrium in the determination of the relative stabilities of stable as well as hypothetical phases. Sample calculations carried out on selected ternary metal-carbon and a metal silicate system demonstrate the application of the equations for extracting thermodynamic data from phase diagrams and also for the prediction of phase equilibria.

This book was released on 1970 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The solid state and solid-liquid equilibria of the Nb-Ta-C system was determined by melting point determinations, X-ray and chemical analysis, metallography, and differential thermal analysis for temperatures above 1500C. The ternary system has a complete solid solution of monocarbides and also of subcarbides if the differences in carbon atom ordering is disregarded. Eutectic troughs in both the metal-rich and carbon-rich regions of the ternary are present. Calculated tie-line distributions agree well with experimental results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ternary alloy system tantalum-hafnium-nitrogen was investigated by means of melting point, X-ray, differential thermal analytical, and metallographic techniques. Also investigated were the two binary systems of tantalum-nitrogen and hafnium-nitrogen. In the ternary system, seven isothermal reactions occur: Three, Class II-type four-phase reactions and four limiting tie line reactions are observed. The observed phase relationships established during the course of this investigation are discussed, and isothermal sections from 1000C to 3200C as well as an isometric view of the ternary system are presented. In addition to the ternary system, phase diagrams for the two binary systems of tantalum-nitrogen and hafnium-nitrogen are also presented. (Author).

Book excerpt: This advanced comprehensive textbook introduces the practical application of phase diagrams to the thermodynamics of materials consisting of several phases. It describes the fundamental physics and thermodynamics as well as experimental methods, treating all material classes: metals, glasses, ceramics, polymers, organic materials, aqueous solutions. With many application examples and realistic cases from chemistry and materials science, it is intended for students and researchers in chemistry, metallurgy, mineralogy, and materials science as well as in engineering and physics. The authors treat the nucleation of phase transitions, the production and stability of technologically important metastable phases, and metallic glasses. Also concisely presented are the thermodynamics and composition of polymer systems. This innovative text puts this powerful analytical approach into a readily understandable and practical context, perhaps for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INFORMATION concerning phase equilibria, such as can be represented by equilibrium diagrams is important in a number of fields of scientific study, and especially in metallurgy, ceramics, and chemistry. Materials of interest in these fields range through single-component to multi-component sys tems, the latter often being very complex. While many industrially im portant systems can be represented adequately by binary equilibrium diagrams, ternary diagrams provide a basis for studying a wide range of the more complex systems, such as are encountered in certain industrial alloys, and in slags and ceramics. A number of texts dealing with ternary systems are already available (see for example references 2-8). Some of these are very comprehensive and include many diagrams, and their use will take the student of the sub ject to an advanced and detailed level of understanding. The present mono graph is intended primarily as an introductory text, which it is hoped will prove useful for undergraduate and postgraduate students of metallurgy and ceramics, in particular. Special attention is given to the requirement of the metallurgist and ceramist to use phase diagrams as a means of under standing phase changes that occur during heating and cooling, as in solidi fication and heat treatment of alloys. This aspect is emphasized in terms of the principles of solidification reactions in relation to solid state constitu tion, particularly making use of liquidus and solidus projections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase equilibrium knowledge is required for the design of all sorts of chemical processes that may involve separations, reactions, fluids flow, particle micronization, etc. Indeed, different phase behavior scenarios are required for a rational conceptual process design. The aim of this chapter is to present the possible fluid mixture phase behavior that can be found in binary, ternary, and multicomponent systems. Moreover, representation of phase behavior in terms of phase diagrams is discussed. Dealing with phase diagrams of complex mixtures is not an easy task for beginners; however, very simple concepts are behind the rules for their construction. Phase diagrams are essential tools for phase equilibrium engineering as they provide valuable hints to understand the process and to assess the feasible and optimum operating regions. In this chapter, the “phenomenological” meaning of each phase behavior and its relation with molecular properties is discussed. A special attention is given to binary system phase behavior. Even though, in practice we rarely found such simple mixtures, they furnish a great deal of information for the understanding of multicomponent systems.

This book was released on 1970 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crystal structure of Ta2VC2 was determined from X-ray powder photographs. The phase is stable from room temperature to above 2600C. The homogeneity range of 1650C varies between the limits (Ta1.80 to 2.04, V1.20 to 0.96)C1.74 to 1.80; the phase is thus substantially deficient in carbon.
