Book excerpt: While perturbative QCD methods fully describe experimental results at high energies, and chiral perturbation theory is the low energy effective theory of the strong interactions, a form of duality is observed connecting these two regimes. In these intermediate kinematics, a wide variety of reactions are observed which can be described simultaneously by single particle (quark) scattering, and by exclusive resonance (hadron) scattering. The contributions in this proceedings volume discuss recent and existing results, and aim to foster current and future research, investigating the phenomenon of quark-hadron duality. This unique volume contains research work by scientists from different arenas of hadronic physics, dealing with different manifestations of quark-hadron duality. Sample Chapter(s). Book excerpt: The duality between partonic and hadronic descriptions of physical phenomena is one of the most remarkable features of strong interaction physics. A classic example of this is in electron-nucleon scattering, in which low-energy cross sections, when averaged over appropriate energy intervals, are found to exhibit the scaling behavior expected from perturbative QCD. We present a comprehensive review of data on structure functions in the resonance region, from which the global and local aspects of duality are quantified, including its flavor, spin and nuclear medium dependence. To interpret the experimental findings, we discuss various theoretical approaches which have been developed to understand the microscopic origins of quark-hadron duality in QCD. Examples from other reactions are used to place duality in a broader context, and future experimental and theoretical challenges are identified.

Book excerpt: In this study, we examine the interference $\gamma Z$ box corrections to parity-violating elastic electron-proton scattering in the light of the recent observation of quark-hadron duality in parity-violating deep-inelastic scattering from the deuteron at low $Q^2$. Using the similarity of electromagnetic and $\gamma Z$ structure function moments and those extracted from leading twist parton distributions down to $Q^2 \approx 1$~GeV$^2$, we find that duality constrains the $\gamma Z$ box correction to $\Re \square_{\gamma Z}^V = (5.4 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-3}$ at the kinematics of the Q-weak experiment. Within the same model we also provide estimates of the $\gamma Z$ corrections for future experiments, such as MOLLER at Jefferson Lab and MESA at Mainz.

Book excerpt: The duality between the partonic and hadronic descriptions of electron--nucleon scattering is a remarkable feature of nuclear interactions. When averaged over appropriate energy intervals the cross section at low energy which is dominated by nucleon resonances resembles the smooth behavior expected from perturbative QCD. Recent Jefferson Lab results indicate that quark-hadron duality is present in a variety of observables, not just the proton F2 structure function. An overview of recent results, especially local quark-hadron duality on the neutron, are presented here.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines the γZ box contribution to the weak charge of the proton. Here, by combining recent parity-violating electron-deuteron scattering data with our current understanding of parton distribution functions, the author shows that one can limit this model dependence. The resulting construction is a robust model of the γγ and γZ structure functions that can also be used to study a variety of low-energy phenomena. Two such cases are discussed in this work, namely, the nucleon’s electromagnetic polarizabilities and quark-hadron duality. By using phenomenological information to constrain the input structure functions, this important but previously poorly understood radiative correction is determined at the kinematics of the parity-violating experiment, QWEAK, to a degree of precision more than twice that of the previous best estimate. A detailed investigation into available parametrizations of the electromagnetic and interference cross-sections indicates that earlier analyses suffered from the inability to correctly quantify their model dependence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At high enough energies asymptotic freedom guarantees the deep inelastic scattering cross sections to be calculated as nearly free electron-quark scattering. However, confinement guarantees that the experimentally observed final states particles are hadrons. Low-energy quark hadron duality suggests that the hadronic cross sections, when averaged over an appropriate energy range, nevertheless coincide with the naive leading-twist quark-gluon calculations. Deep inelastic inclusive scattering shows that scaling at modest Q2 and v already arises from very few resonance channels. This is reflected by the striking agreement (10%) between data in the nucleon resonance region and the deep inelastic (W24GeV2) region for the Q2>0.5 (GeV/c)2, known as the Bloom-Gilman duality. Electron-hadron scattering allows for further investigation of quark-hadron duality by virtue of its ability to select resonances, by tagging with either spin or flavor.

Book excerpt: Quark-hadron duality addresses some of the most fundamental issues in strong interaction physics, in particular the nature of the transition from perturbative to nonperturbative QCD. In this talk I summarize recent developments in quark-hadron duality in lepton-hadron scattering, and outline how duality can be studied at future high-luminosity facilities such as the electron-ion collider. In its broadest form, quark-hadron duality postulates that physical quantities calculated in a quark-gluon basis should be identical to those evaluated in a hadronic basis. The phenomenon of duality shows up in many physical processes, such as ee− annihilation into hadrons, or semi-leptonic decays of heavy mesons. One of the more intriguing examples, initially observed some 30 years ago by Bloom and Gilman [1], is in inclusive inelastic electron-nucleon scattering.

Book excerpt: While quark-hadron duality is well-established experimentally, the current theoretical understanding of this important phenomenon is quite limited. To expose the essential features of the dynamics behind duality, we use a simple model in which the hadronic spectrum is dominated by narrow resonances made of valence quarks. We qualitatively reproduce the features of duality as seen in electron scattering data within our model. We show that in order to observe duality, it is essential to use the appropriate scaling variable and scaling function. In addition to its great intrinsic interest in connecting the quark-gluon and hadronic pictures, an understanding of quark-hadron duality could lead to important benefits in extending the applicability of scaling into previously inaccessible regions.

Book excerpt: The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) experiment BONuS used a novel spectator-tagging technique to measure the inclusive electron-free neutron scattering cross section and extract the F2 structure function. This data was used to reconstruct moments of F2 in the three prominent resonance region and the moments integrated over the entire resonance region. Comparisons of the experimental results with moments obtained from global parton distribution function parametrization seem to suggest that the quark-hadron duality hypothesis holds locally for the neutron in the second and third resonance regions down to Q2 of 1 GeV2; with up to 20% violations observed in the first resonance region.
