Book excerpt: Recent experimental investigations of deep inelastic scattering, baryon form factors and high momentum transfer nuclear reactions have revealed many unexpected phenomena that suggest deep relationships between nucleon structure, hadronic spectroscopy and quantum chromodynamics. The proceedings of this summer school will help young researchers understand these topics and appreciate the importance of existing and expected data. This volume is the first of a series on the summer schools and workshops at the Institute for Nuclear Theory, which was opened at the University of Washington following the recommendation of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee. The formation of this national institute was a response by the nuclear physics comunity to the shortage of nuclear theorists vis-a-vis experimentalists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of important lecture and original articles and commentaries by Martin Perl, discoverer of the tau lepton and the third generation of elementary particles, and this year's Nobel Prize winner. This book contains a fascinating and realistic picture of experimental science based on the high energy physics research work carried out by him. Using reprints of his articles with his commentaries, the author presents the various aspects of experimental research in science: the pleasures and risks of experimental work; the pain and frustration with experiments that are useless or fail; the dreaming about experiments that were not carried out; the constant search for innovation and creativity in the work; and the special joy of discovery. The articles and commentaries range from the early days of bubble chambers and spark chambers in the 1950's to the author's present research, experiments at an electron-positron collider and a search for free quarks. The book is for the general reader as well as the scientist.

Book excerpt: Our current understanding of elementary particles and their interactions emerged from break-through experiments. This book presents these experiments, beginning with the discoveries of the neutron and positron, and following them through mesons, strange particles, antiparticles, and quarks and gluons. This second edition contains new chapters on the W and Z bosons, the top quark, B-meson mixing and CP violation, and neutrino oscillations. This book provides an insight into particle physics for researchers, advanced undergraduate and graduate students. Throughout the book, the fundamental equations required to understand the experiments are derived clearly and simply. Each chapter is accompanied by reprinted articles and a collection of problems with a broad range of difficulty.

Book excerpt: The discovery of the two families of heavy-quark-antiquark bound states, the &Ugr; and &PSgr; quarkonium spectroscopies, has played a crucial role in unravelling the nature of strong interactions. The articles collected together in this volume are concerned with the connection between quarkonia and quantum chromodynamics. They deal with potential models, spin-dependent forces, next-to-leading order QCD corrections for decay widths and energy level differences, hadronic transitions and the quark-antiquark interaction in QCD, based on perturbation theory, lattice gauge theory and QCD sum rules. Finally, a brief guide is given to the existing literature on possible new quarkonium systems which have been conjectured in connection with gluonic degrees of freedom, and with expectations for new heavy particles with colour, such as the top quark and scalar quarks.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the invited lectures and seminars presented at the Banff Summer Institute on Particles and Fields held at the Banff Center in Banff, Canada, from 25 August to 3 September, 1977. The town is situated in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, and the observant reader may notice references in this volume to the bears which roam near the town. The subject matter of the school was recent advances in particle physics and field theory. Lectures were given on such topics as extended objects, lattice gauge theories, quantum chromodynamics and Reggeon field theory. Experimental reviews were given of recent work in charmed particle and neutrino physics. Summaries of the theoretical implications of these experiments were also given. The format of the talks included eight lecture series (of three to four hours each) given by Profs. Abarbanel, Appelquist, Feldman, Gilman, 't Hooft, Jackiw, Mann and Weinstein, seven one-hour seminars given by Profs. Caianiello, Fujii, Johnson, Lam, Phillips, Sherry and Tze, and several short contributed seminars (which do not appear in this volume). There were also small informal seminar groups held at the Center and, we hope, many physics conversations on the hiking trails where most of the participants spent their afternoons. Not included in these proceedings are the banquet speeches by E. Caianiello and S. D. Drell, as well as (for copyright reasons) a seminar by K. Johnson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During August 1980 a group of 85 physicists from 57 laboratories in 21 countries met in Erice for the 18th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. The countries represented were Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Colombia, Czechoslovakia, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Yugoslavia. The School was sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Public Education (MFI) , the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Technological Research (MRST) , the Regional Sicilian Government (ERS), and the Weizmann Institute of Science. The programme of the School was mainly devoted to a review of the very low energy corner where we are all working at present, and to a discussion of what the future could be for subnuclear physics before the end of this century. On the theoretical front, the highlight of this Course was the lectures by S. Adler on the non-local U(2) gauge theory. The non locality at the colour-level should disappear at the colour-singlet level -- where all particles we know of exist and should the- fore not scare those who do not like the idea of giving up this basic principle of quantum field theory: locality. On the other hand, the great dream of producing the world where we live, starting from the simplest symmetry group U(2), now seems to have a good chance of becoming a reality.

Book excerpt: In August 1978 a group of 80 physicists from 51 laboratories of 15 countries met in Erice to attend the 16th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. The countries represented at the School were: Austria, Denmark, Federal Republic of Germany, Finland, France, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, The United States of America, and Yugoslavia. The School was sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Public Education (MPI) , the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Technological Research (MRSI) , the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the Sicilian Regional Government, and the Weizmann Institute of Science. As usual, the Course was devoted to a review of the most out standing problems and results in Subnuclear Physics, with particular emphasis on the new aspects; there were mainly two: supersymmetry and electroweak interactions. In his famous lecture at Erice in 1967, Sid Coleman reviewed "All possible symmetries of the S matrix. " All but one, namely that which tells you: if you have a fermion you must have a boson. This is super symmetry , and this produces the superspace, i. e. an entity which has not only the Einstein-"bosonic" coordinates, but also "fermionic" coordinates. From superspace we get supergravity; and this means that one day we should be able to detect not only the graviton (with spin 2) but also the gravitino (spin 3/2). If we add "flavour", "colour", and "family" as other intrinsic degrees of freedom, we get extended supergravity.

Book excerpt: From 23 July to 10 August 1977 a group of 125 physicists from 72 laboratories of 20 countries met in Erice to attend the 15th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. The countries represented at the School were: Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Federal Republic of Germany, Finland, France, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Venezuela. The School was sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Public Education (MPI), the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Technologi cal Research (MRST) , the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the Regional Sicilian Government (ERS) and the Heizmann Institute of Science. The School was very exciting due to the impressive number of frontier problems which were discussed. Being the 15th year of the School, it was decided to review all outstanding "Whys". At various stages of my work I have enjoyed the collaboration of many friends whose contributions have been extremely important for the School and are highly appreciated. I would like to thank Dr.A. Gabriele, Ms.S. McGarry, Mr. and Mrs. S. Newman, Ms.P. Savalli and Ms.M. Zaini for the general scientific and administrative work. Finally, I would like to thank most warmly all those ~n Erice, Bologna and Geneva who helped me on so many occasions and to whom I feel very much indebted.
