Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical magnesium alloys are a combination of aluminium, magnesium, manganese and zinc. Magnesium combined with lithium forms ultralight alloys that have many uses. Since it is a reasonable material, it offers great possibilities and is constantly tested at various angles of applications and properties. Magnesium, previously used for military purposes, seems to fit perfectly to the requirements of the currently prevailing technology. Low density with appropriate mechanical properties (strength, high operating temperature), good foundry properties (high castability and low shrinkage), vibration damping ability and cost-effectiveness of recycling seem to be an ideal response to market needs. All things considered, magnesium alloys are the perfect material used in various industries starting from the automotive industry, through sport, electronics up to the space industry and defence. This book is written by experts in various areas of magnesium science and technology. It gives a general idea of modern advancements in theory and practical purposes of magnesium alloys. The book reports fundamental aspects of corrosion types and details about magnesium alloys designed to work in elevated temperatures and superplastic behaviour. Fundamentals, broad experience, theory as well as complex technological aspects make this work helpful for engineers and scientists from all over the world.

Book excerpt: A brief review is presented of progress in the development of Mg-Li-base alloys. By virtue of the Li, which has a specific gravity of 0.53, they have lower densities than any commercial Mg alloy. Li markedly improves the ductility and workability of magnesium. Since they have approximately the same modulus of elasticity as Mg alloys, about 6.5 million psi, the alloys have a high ratio of elastic modulus to weight, making possible rigid, light structures. No Mg-Li alloys are in commercial production. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS). Magnesium, with its very rich reserves within the Earth, is an important engineering material, but has not yet been fully developed and utilized. Given its low density, magnesium has a higher specific strength and stiffness than many other engineering materials: including aluminum, steel and polymer-based composites. Magnesium also offers other attractive properties: such as a high damping capacity, electromagnetic shielding, dimensional stability, and good machinability and recyclability. As a relatively new structural material, magnesium and its alloys have demonstrated a significant potential for applications in many industries: including automobile, 3C (computer, communication and consumer) products, transportation, power-tools/equipment and new energy sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnesium alloys have been attractive to designers due to their low density (two thirds that of aluminium), the sixth most abundant on earth, is ductile and the most machinable of all the metals. This has been a major factor in the widespread use of magnesium alloy castings and wrought products, powder metallurgy components, sacrificial anodes for the protection of other metals, tools. The present book, "New Features on Magnesium Alloys", gives us an overview in some special areas of magnesium alloys concerning technological applications and eco-friendly requirements. Each chapter brings us a new facet relating to the magnesium alloy application: magnesium alloys quasicrystals used to magnesium alloys reinforcement; rare earth metals as alloying components in magnesium implants for orthopaedic applications; magnesium alloys surface treatment by applying physical vapor deposition processes; casting magnesium alloys subjected to laser treatment; ductility enhancement on special magnesium alloys; welding and joining processing of magnesium alloys; transport application of magnesium and its alloys.
