Book excerpt: Mathematics Research Center Symposia and Advanced Seminar Series: Transition and Turbulence covers the lectures presented at the Symposium on Transition and Turbulence in Fluids, held in Madison, Wisconsin on October 13-15, 1980 under the auspices of the Mathematics Research Center of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The book focuses on the relation between transition and turbulence in fluids and the importance of this relation for the understanding of many real fluid motions. The selection first elaborates on transition in flow between rotating concentric cylinders, observations in the Taylor experiment, and transition to turbulence in thermal convection with and without rotation. Discussions focus on low aspect ratio convection layers, random convection in a rotating layer, unsteady flows at high Reynolds numbers, transition to oscillatory motion, and experimental observations. The text then tackles instability and turbulence in jets, instability and transition in pipes and channels, and transition to turbulence in boundary layers. The book ponders on coherent structures in turbulence; interactions between large-scale coherent structures and fine-grained turbulence in free shear flows; and vortex interactions and coherent structures in turbulence. Topics include atomic and molecular representations, vortices in uniform strain, vortex pairs, numerical computations applied to a simple problem, agglomeration of large-scale structures and subharmonic formation, retrieving phase information, and dynamical equations. The selection is highly recommended for researchers interested in pursuing further studies on transition and turbulence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stability of a viscous fluid between two concentric rotating cylinders with an axial flow is investigated. Two methods of solution are employed to study this problem, when both cylinders are rotating in the same direction and when the gap between the cylinders is small. Results are given for small amounts of axial flow which indicate that the critical Taylor number increases with increasing amounts of axial flow. The results are compared with previous experimental and theoretical results. The problem when both cylinders are rotating in opposite directions is studied in the small gap case and results are obtained for small amounts of axial flow. These results indicate that the Taylor number increases with increasing amounts of axial flow. (Author).

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation has been carried out on the flow transitions around a smooth circular cylinder in the initial stage of the critical Reynolds number region, where drag coefficient starts to decrease. In this Reynolds number region, intermitent reattachment of the separated boundary layer was found, while only initial separation position excursion was observed in the subcritical region. Large spanwise variations in the surface pressure and wake velocity observed in the first critical subregion were associated with local wake width pulsations caused by spanwise phase variations in the unsteady flow reattachment.

Book excerpt: The ion technique is applied to a variety of experiments in Couette flow: determination of the critical Taylor number; determination of wavenumber and waveform of the vortices; establishment of the laws that the square of the amplitude and the amplification factor both vary as the difference between the Taylor number and the critical Taylor number; and finally certain studies ofte growth and decay of vortices as the Taylor number is changed. The experimental data are compared with the results of integration of the exact equations for the linear stability problem by means of a high-speed computer. These theoretical values were obtained by P.H. Roberts and are presented in an appendix to this paper. (Author).

Book excerpt: Seldom does a physical system, particularly one as apparently simple as the flow of a Newtonian fluid between concentric rotating cylinders, retain the interest of scientists, applied mathematicians and engineers for very long. Yet, as this volume goes to press it has been nearly 70 years since G. I. Taylor's outstanding experimental and theoretical study of the linear stability of this flow was published, and a century since the first experiments were performed on rotating cylinder viscometers. Since then, the study of this system has progressed enormously, but new features of the flow patterns are still being uncovered. Interesting variations on the basic system abound. Connections with open flows are being made. More complex fluids are used in some experiments. The vigor of the research going on in this particular example of nonequilibrium systems was very apparent at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Ordered and Turbulent Patterns in Taylor Couette Flow," held in Columbus, Ohio, USA May 22-24, 1991. A primary goal of this ARW was to bring together those interested in pattern formation in the classic Taylor Couette problem with those looking at variations on the basic system and with those interested in related systems, in order to better define the interesting areas for the future, the open questions, and the features common (and not common) to closed and open systems. This volume contains many of the contributions presented during the workshop.
