Book excerpt: Gasoline compression ignition concepts with the majority of the fuel being introduced early in the cycle are known as partially premixed combustion (PPC). Previous research on single- and multi-cylinder engines has shown that PPC has the potential for high thermal efficiency with low NOx and soot emissions. A variety of fuel injection strategies has been proposed in the literature. These injection strategies aim to create a partially stratified charge to simultaneously reduce NOx and soot emissions while maintaining some level of control over the combustion process through the fuel delivery system. The impact of the direct injection strategy to create a premixed charge of fuel and air has not previously been explored, and its impact on engine efficiency and emissions is not well understood. This paper explores the effect of sweeping the direct injected pilot timing from -91° to -324° ATDC, which is just after the exhaust valve closes for the engine used in this study. During the sweep, the pilot injection consistently contained 65% of the total fuel (based on command duration ratio), and the main injection timing was adjusted slightly to maintain combustion phasing near top dead center. A modern four cylinder, 1.9 L diesel engine with a variable geometry turbocharger, high pressure common rail injection system, wide included angle injectors, and variable swirl actuation was used in this study. The pistons were modified to an open bowl configuration suitable for highly premixed combustion modes. The stock diesel injection system was unmodified, and the gasoline fuel was doped with a lubricity additive to protect the high pressure fuel pump and the injectors. The study was conducted at a fixed speed/load condition of 2000 rpm and 4.0 bar brake mean effective pressure (BMEP). The pilot injection timing sweep was conducted at different intake manifold pressures, swirl levels, and fuel injection GTP-15-1067, Dempsey 2 pressures. The gasoline used in this study has relatively high fuel reactivity with a research octane number of 68. The results of this experimental campaign indicate that the highest brake thermal efficiency and lowest emissions are achieved simultaneously with the earliest pilot injection timings (i.e., during the intake stroke).

Book excerpt: In-cylinder strategies such as advanced fuel injection schedules and optimal piston bowl designs are often utilized in diesel combustion for to improve efficiency and/or reduce emissions. The large design space for injection schedules makes choosing the optimal schedule for an engine particularly challenging. Additionally, experimental in-engine studies of advanced injection schedules are time-consuming and costly. Gas jet experiments can provide a good approximation for the behavior of diesel jets and more tests can be conducted in a shorter period of time without incurring the costs of an engine research facility. The goal of this work is to gain a further understanding of some of the fundamental fluid mechanics of multiple injections, jet-jet interactions, and jets impinging on surfaces.Gas jet experiments are conducted using z-schlieren and acetone tracer planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF). Three studies are conducted focusing on free jets, multiple jet interactions, jet-jet interaction, and bowl geometry effects. The first study is a comparison of penetration results for helium gas jets with penetration results for vaporizing and non-vaporizing sprays, which shows that by non-dimensionalizing the results of gas jet experiments, the penetration curve follows a similar trend to the non-dimensionalized penetration curve for vaporizing and non-vaporizing liquid sprays. The second study explores the fluid mechanic interactions between multiple injections and the effects of injection duration and dwell. The schlieren results of the multiple-injection studies showed that before the end of injection (EOI) the non-dimensional jet-tip penetration was not significantly different for the first and second injection, however, the average dispersion half angle during the quasi-steady portion of injection was higher for the first injection than for the second injection. There are two multiple-injection cases where the average dispersion half angle of the second injection is higher than that of the first injection by a statistically significant amount. These differences in jet dispersion angle are indicative of differences in mixing and entrainment during the first and second injections. Future studies with acetone-PLIF will allow the concentration to be quantified and differences in the jet composition for the first and second injections in multiple-injection schemes to be compared. The last study focuses on the effects of piston bowl geometry and the angle between interacting jets. The effects of the geometry on fluid recirculation and mixing are studied using schlieren and PLIF with jets of acetone vapor and air and two different piston bowl designs. The results showed that a deeper bowl and wider angle between the jets allows for improved mixing and air utilization.

Book excerpt: Diesel engines, also known as CI engines, possess a wide field of applications as energy converters because of their higher efficiency. However, diesel engines are a major source of NOX and particulate matter (PM) emissions. Because of its importance, five chapters in this book have been devoted to the formulation and control of these pollutants. The world is currently experiencing an oil crisis. Gaseous fuels like natural gas, pure hydrogen gas, biomass-based and coke-based syngas can be considered as alternative fuels for diesel engines. Their combustion and exhaust emissions characteristics are described in this book. Reliable early detection of malfunction and failure of any parts in diesel engines can save the engine from failing completely and save high repair cost. Tools are discussed in this book to detect common failure modes of diesel engine that can detect early signs of failure.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on gasoline compression ignition (GCI) which offers the prospect of engines with high efficiency and low exhaust emissions at a lower cost. A GCI engine is a compression ignition (CI) engine which is run on gasoline-like fuels (even on low-octane gasoline), making it significantly easier to control particulates and NOx but with high efficiency. The state of the art development to make GCI combustion feasible on practical vehicles is highlighted, e.g., on overcoming problems on cold start, high-pressure rise rates at high loads, transients, and HC and CO emissions. This book will be a useful guide to those in academia and industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combustion has played a central role in the development of our civilization which it maintains today as its predominant source of energy. The aim of this book is to provide an understanding of both fundamental and applied aspects of low-temperature combustion chemistry and autoignition. The topic is rooted in classical observational science and has grown, through an increasing understanding of the linkage of the phenomenology to coupled chemical reactions, to quite profound advances in the chemical kinetics of both complex and elementary reactions. The driving force has been both the intrinsic interest of an old and intriguing phenomenon and the centrality of its applications to our economic prosperity. The volume provides a coherent view of the subject while, at the same time, each chapter is self-contained.

This book was released on 1944 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: An investigation has been made of the effectiveness of water injection into the combustion end zone of a spark-ignition engine cylinder for the suppression of knock. Pressure-time recoreds obtained show that injection of water at 60° B.T.C. on the compression stroke at a water-fuel ratio of 0.3 rendered M-3 fuel as good as S-3 fuel from an antiknock consideration. The optimum crank angle for injection of water into the end zone was found to be critical. As the injection angle was increased beyond the optimum, the quantity of water required to suppress knock increased to 3.6 water-fuel ratio at 132° B.T.C. The water quantity could not be increased beyond 3.6 water-fuel ration because of injection-pump limitations; however, a further increase in the injection angle up to the earliest angle obtainable, which was 20° A.T.C. on the intake stroke, continuously increased the knock intensity. The engine operating conditions of the tests did not simulate those encountered in flight, especially with regard to the operating speed of 570 rpm. For this reason the results should only be regarded as of theoretical importance until further investigation has been made.
