Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents the main results of the Collaborative Research Center SFB-TRR 75, which spanned the period from 2010 to 2022. Scientists from a variety of disciplines, ranging from thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and electrical engineering to chemistry, mathematics, computer science, and visualization, worked together toward the overarching goal of SFB-TRR 75, to gain a deep physical understanding of fundamental droplet processes, especially those that occur under extreme ambient conditions. These are, for example, near critical thermodynamic conditions, processes at very low temperatures, under the influence of strong electric fields, or in situations with extreme gradients of boundary conditions. The fundamental understanding is a prerequisite for the prediction and optimisation of engineering systems with droplets and sprays, as well as for the prediction of droplet-related phenomena in nature. The book includes results from experimental investigations as well as new analytical and numerical descriptions on different spatial and temporal scales. The contents of the book have been organised according to methodological fundamentals, phenomena associated with free single drops, drop clusters and sprays, and drop and spray phenomena involving wall interactions.

Book excerpt: The book provides design engineers an elemental understanding of the variables that influence pressure drop and heat transfer in plain and micro-fin tubes to thermal systems using liquid single-phase flow in different industrial applications. It also provides design engineers using gas-liquid, two-phase flow in different industrial applications the necessary fundamentals of the two-phase flow variables. The author and his colleagues were the first to determine experimentally the very important relationship between inlet geometry and transition. On the basis of their results, they developed practical and easy to use correlations for the isothermal and non-isothermal friction factor (pressure drop) and heat transfer coefficient (Nusselt number) in the transition region as well as the laminar and turbulent flow regions for different inlet configurations and fin geometry. This work presented herein provides the thermal systems design engineer the necessary design tools. The author further presents a succinct review of the flow patterns, void fraction, pressure drop and non-boiling heat transfer phenomenon and recommends some of the well scrutinized modeling techniques.

Book excerpt: The turbulence structure of convective beat transfer was studied experimentally in complex three-dimensional and separating turbulent boundary layers. Three test cases whose fluid dynamics have been well documented were examined. In case 1, time- and spatially-resolved surface heat transfer was measured in the nose region of a wing-body junction formed by a wing and a flat plate. Both the wing and the endwall were heated and held at a constant uniform temperature 20 C above ambient temperature. Heat flux rates were increased up to a factor of 3 over the heat flux rates in the approach boundary layer. The rms of the heat flux fluctuations were as high as 25% of the mean heat flux in the vortex-dominated nose region. Away from the wing, upstream of the time-averaged vortex center, augmentation in the heat flux is due to increased turbulent mixing caused by large-scale unsteadiness of the vortex. Adjacent to the wing the augmentation in heat flux is due to a change in the mean velocity field. In case 2, simultaneous surface heat flux and temperature profiles were measured at 8 locations in the spatially-developing pressure-driven three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer upstream of a wing-body junction. Mean heat transfer was decreased 10% by three-dimensionality. The turbulent Prandtl number in the near-wall region of logarithmic temperature variation was approximately 0.9 at all measurement locations in the three-dimensional boundary layer. Profiles of the skewness factor of temperature fluctuations and conditionally-averaged temperature signals during a sweep/ejection event suggest that the strength of ejections of hot fluid from the near-wall region are decreased by three-dimensionality.

Book excerpt: Two-phase flow with a free surface, non-isothermal boundary conditions and heat and mass transfer over the free surface must be understood for a save operation of cryogenic upper stages with restart capability. This work is a foundational research carried out with numerical and experimental means. A mathematical and numerical model were developed that allow to describe such systems under varying gravity levels. The reorientation of cryogenic parahydrogen upon a sudden gravity step reduction was investigated experimentally using the drop tower at ZARM, University of Bremen. Influencing the motion and final shape of the free surface could be realized with a precisely defined wall temperature gradient. Heat and mass transfer over the free surface in a microgravity environment could be investigated numerically based on the experimental results of the SOURCE-II sounding rocket experiment. A transient simulation was carried out to study the coupled system between superheated container wall, subcooled liquid, free surface configuration and three-phase contact angle.

Book excerpt: The static pressure drop and both the local and average heat transfer coefficients were measured for the horizontal annular flow of water and air in a tube with an inside diameter of one inch. A correlation for the heat transfer coefficients was obtained. The pressure drop data agreed well with the Lockhart-Martinelli correlation and the prediction of the Wrobel-McManus wave roughness theory. A theory based on an axisymmetric model with no liquid entrainment was developed to allow predictions of local heat transfer coefficients. In comparing the predictions with the measured coefficients, 85% of the predictions were within plus or minus 60% of the measured values from horizontal flow and substantially better agreement resulted when the theory was modified empirically to take into account liquid entrainment and circumferential temperature variations. The theory was applied to conditions beyond the scope of the experimental program to predict the effects of varying heat flux, tube temperature, and tube diameter on the coefficients.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work studies the relationship between target and sidewall surfaces of a multi-row, narrow impingement channel at various jet heights with one impingement hole per row. Temperature sensitive paint and constant flux heaters are used to gather heat transfer data on the target and side walls. Jet-to-target distance is set to 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9 jet diameters. The channel width is 4 jet diameters and the jet stream wise spacing is 5 jet diameters. All cases were run at Reynolds numbers ranging from 5,000 to 30,000. Pressure data is also gathered and used to calculate the channel mass flux profiles, used to better understand the flow characteristics of the impingement channel. While target plate heat transfer profiles have been thoroughly studied in the literature, side wall data has only recently begun to be studied. The present work shows the significant impact the side walls provide to the overall heat transfer capabilities of the impingement channel. It was shown that the side walls provide a significant amount of heat transfer to the channel. A channel height of three diameters was found to be the optimum height in order to achieve the largest heat transfer rates out of all channels.
