Book excerpt: In the second part of this dissertation, a spherical chamber was designed and validated to measure the laminar burning velocity (LBV) of a promising biofuel: 2,4-Dimethyl-3-pentanone, (DIPK), for homogenous charge compression ignition engines. LBV measurements were carried out with various diluent species (N2, Ar, and He) in order to provide several data points for development and validation of DIPK chemical kinetic mechanisms. It has been found that DIPK does not only have higher temperature and pressure sensitivities (compared to iso-octane), but additionally enabled a faster laminar burning velocity which leads to higher rate of heat release in reciprocating engines.

Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2006 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: 1, mit Ausgezeichnung bestanden, Vienna University of Technology (Insitut für Photonik), language: English, abstract: In this PhD thesis different fundamental aspects and the practical usability of a laser ignition system as a new, innovative and alternative ignition approach for internal combustion engines were investigated in great detail mainly experimentally. Ignition experiments in combustion chambers under high pressures and elevated temperatures have been conducted. Different fuels were investigated. Also the minimum breakdown energy in dependence of the initial temperature and pressure with the help of an aspheric lens with a high numerical aperture was studied. High-speed Schlieren diagnostics have been conducted in the combustion chamber. The different stages like the ignition plasma within the first nanoseconds via the shock wave generation to the expanding flame kernel were investigated. With the help of multi-point ignition the combustion duration could be reduced significantly. The controlled start of auto-ignition of n-heptane-air mixtures by resonant absorption of Er, Cr: YSGG laser radiation at 2.78 μm by additionally introduced water has been proven in combustion chamber experiments as a completely new idea. Beside experiments in the combustion chambers and long term tests under atmospheric conditions, various tests in SI engines up to 200 h, have been made. Different sources of contamination of the window surface have been identified. First experiments with a longitudinally diode-pumped, fiber-coupled and passively Q-switched solid-state laser α-prototype system with maximum pulse energy of 1.5 mJ at about 1.5 ns pulse duration were performed which allowed to ignite the engine successfully over a test period of 100 h. In cooperation with Lund University in Sweden, experiments have been performed on another engine test bed running in HCCI mode revealing the las

Book excerpt: Gasoline fuel is the most convenient energy source for light-duty vehicles in energy density and refueling time. However, the emission regulations for internal combustion engines force the industry to exploit innovative combustion technologies. The spark-ignition engine was forced to be cleaner and more efficient, changing from regular combustion engines to a more advanced internal combustion engine and electrification. The current scenario shows that automotive companies and researchers are exploring hybrid powertrains with advanced internal combustion engine technologies with electrification or pure electric vehicles. The Dual Mode, Turbulent Jet Ignition (DM-TJI) system is one of the promising advanced combustion systems, powered by active air/fuel scavenging pre-chamber ignition systems. The distributed ignition sites created by the pre-chamber flames improve the combustion engine's efficiency, simultaneously mitigating combustion knock at a high engine compression ratio and enabling lean-burn or high level of external EGR dilution operation. This study analyzes the performance of a single-cylinder DM-TJI metal engine with gasoline and alternative fuels. The first part of the study presents the experimental investigations on three pre-chamber nozzle orifice diameters at various engine speeds and 10 bar engine load. The combustion parameters for each tested orifice diameter are presented for the incremental engine speeds. A numerical analysis was conducted using the GT-Power model simulation tool to support the experimental result. The DM-TJI engine's maximum gross indicated efficiency was examined and found to be 44.56%, with a higher EGR dilution rate of 45%. This orifice diameter study reported on the first published results of the desertion. Additional experimental data were collected for the selected orifice diameter at a wide range of engine operating test matrices. A predictive engine model was introduced with experimental data validation. The experimental data and predictive model generated the engine performance and fuel map for a real-world fuel economy study. Conventional and hybrid powertrain vehicles were developed with GT-Suite commercial software. Each powertrain model was calibrated in terms of components (battery, electric motors) capacity, internal combustion engine operative points, energy management strategy, and gear ratios with chassis dynamometer measured data of the vehicle drive cycle. A selected U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) driving schedule was implemented on the GT-Suite powertrain. The DM-TJI engine drive cycle fuel economy is compared to an industry-based conventional vehicle with the same powertrain except for the engine map. The results show the DM-TJI engine fuel economy improvement between 10.5%-17.29% and CO2 emissions reductions between 9.51%-14.75% for the selected driving schedule. Mild and parallel hybrid powertrain further improve the fuel economy by 9.23% and 29.88%, respectively, compared to the conventional powertrain of the DM-TJI engine. The CO2 emission was reduced by 23%. Finally, the single-cylinder DM-TJI metal engine performance under different alternative fuels was studied. An experimental test was carried out at stoichiometric conditions with different fuels, engine speed, engine load, and EGR dilution rates. Compared to gasoline fuel, E80 ethanol blend fuel produces 4.47% less CO2 and 25.75% less CO emission, and methane fuel produces 27.91% less CO2 and 57.85% less CO emission. E80 ethanol blend has the highest indicated efficiency of 45.61% with 45% EGR dilution. Methane fuel has a maximum indicated efficiency of 45.03% with 38.5% EGR dilution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spark plugs have been igniting combustible mixtures like those found in automotive engines for over a century, and the principles of the associated ignition techniques using thermal plasma (inductive or capacitive sparks) have remained relatively unchanged during that time. However, internal combustion engines are increasingly operating with boosted intake pressures (i.e. turbo- or super-charged) in order to maintain power output while simultaneously reducing engine size and weight, and they are also operating with increased recirculated exhaust gas dilution to reduce the production of harmful nitrogen oxides. This “downsizing” to increase fuel economy compounded with diluting to decrease emissions leads to challenges in both obtaining traditional ignition and promoting sufficiently fast combustion under this operating paradigm. In conjunction with appropriate electrode design, transient non-thermal plasma can exploit certain non-equilibrium chemistry and physics to bypass these challenges and ultimately promote more reliable ignition and faster combustion. Applied and fundamental experimental investigations of two different advanced ignition techniques are presented: 1) corona discharges igniting gasoline/air/exhaust mixtures in a boosted direct- injection single cylinder research engine and 2) repetitively pulsed nanosecond discharges igniting methane/air mixtures in a constant volume chamber. The engine experimental results show significant decreases in fuel consumption and nitrogen oxide emissions under boosted operation, and both experiments demonstrate more robust ignition and faster flame development. The constant volume chamber results in particular raise important questions about the relative contributions of chemistry and transport to the experimentally observed combustion enhancement. These results highlight the critical importance of electrode design in advanced ignition techniques—the shape and position of electrodes greatly influences the hydrodynamics of developing flame kernels into fuel-air charges. While this work demonstrates that non-thermal plasma ignition is a promising solution to both increase fuel economy and decrease emissions of future automotive engines, much work remains to be done to understand the beneficial coupling between the detailed non-thermal plasma chemistry and the hydrodynamics associated with these real ignition devices.

Book excerpt: Wide adoption of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) powered by spark ignition (SI) engines that require high-octane gasoline has triggered an increase in fuel costs incurred by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). Most current United States Air Force (USAF) vehicles are fueled with JP-8, a low-octane kerosene-like fuel that is well suited for turbine engines. A relaxation in octane requirement is required to fuel current SI engines with a low-octane fuel like JP-8 and avoid destructive end-gas knock. In this thesis, a two-phase octane requirement study is conducted using a Rotax 914 four-cylinder turbocharged SI engine. In phase one, net indicated mean effective pressure (IMEPn) is characterized at typical cruise speeds as fuel octane number (ON) is varied on-the-fly using a dual port-fuel-injection (PFI) system. IMEPn is compared among dual-PFI blends from 20 to 87 ON, neat n-heptane, neat JP-8, and JP-8/iso-octane blends. A JP-8/iso-octane demonstration is conducted to show the volume proportion of JP-8 that could be used to sustain flight. Results for typical cruise operation using JP-8/iso-octane blends show that a maximum volume flow proportion of 88% JP-8 at low-load cruise, and 40% at high-load cruise could be used to sustain flight. Although an impractical configuration, these results reveal that low-load neat JP-8 cruise is a possibility if the octane requirement of the Rotax 914 can be relaxed. The second phase of testing focuses on achieving full-load takeoff performance on 87 ON, since high-load operation is impractical with JP-8. The effects of intake air temperature (IAT), equivalence ratio, ignition timing, and dual-simultaneous ignition on knock are investigated. The combination of delayed combustion phasing with dual-simultaneous-ignition and increased equivalence ratio enables greater maximum IMEPn on 87 ON than the base configuration on 100 ON. To offset the additional fuel used for takeoff, a cruise fuel consumption study is conducted to characterize the reduction in indicated specific fuel consumption (ISFC) with an optimized fuel-lean, dual-simultaneous-ignition, and advanced ignition timing configuration compared to base conditions. The ISFC reduction in the optimized cruise configuration can directly offset the additional fuel used in the optimized 87 ON take-off configuration for flights as short as 4 hours. The 87 ON optimized cruise and take-off configurations can be combined to allow up to 3.5 additional hours of cruise.

Book excerpt: The light-duty vehicle fleet is expected to undergo substantial technological changes over the next several decades. New powertrain designs, alternative fuels, advanced materials and significant changes to the vehicle body are being driven by increasingly stringent fuel economy and greenhouse gas emission standards. By the end of the next decade, cars and light-duty trucks will be more fuel efficient, weigh less, emit less air pollutants, have more safety features, and will be more expensive to purchase relative to current vehicles. Though the gasoline-powered spark ignition engine will continue to be the dominant powertrain configuration even through 2030, such vehicles will be equipped with advanced technologies, materials, electronics and controls, and aerodynamics. And by 2030, the deployment of alternative methods to propel and fuel vehicles and alternative modes of transportation, including autonomous vehicles, will be well underway. What are these new technologies - how will they work, and will some technologies be more effective than others? Written to inform The United States Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission standards, this new report from the National Research Council is a technical evaluation of costs, benefits, and implementation issues of fuel reduction technologies for next-generation light-duty vehicles. Cost, Effectiveness, and Deployment of Fuel Economy Technologies for Light-Duty Vehicles estimates the cost, potential efficiency improvements, and barriers to commercial deployment of technologies that might be employed from 2020 to 2030. This report describes these promising technologies and makes recommendations for their inclusion on the list of technologies applicable for the 2017-2025 CAFE standards.
