Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geomechanical behaviour of natural fractured media (NFM) is governed by existing planes of weakness. These planes of weakness can be open fractures, partially closed joints, or cemented veins, and they are classified in groups, joint sets, based on the similarities among them. Some joint sets exhibit cohesion due to infill material emplaced along the walls of the fractures. The geometry of the joint sets in combination with the rigidity of the intact rock allows for shear events to occur when the rock mass is stimulated by hydraulic fracturing. A methodology is produced to create an analogue cohesive fracture within a transparent rock analogue, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), and an experimental technique to measure the cohesion or fracture toughness is developed in this study. The methodology is produced to create the cohesive interface is applied by creating cohesive cube specimens to study the interaction the interaction between the hydraulic fracture and the fracture media. The cohesive interface was achieved using the thermal bonding properties of PMMA where two blocks of the material were fused together at 149°C (300°F) under different applied stresses - 6, 12, and 24kPa - and different time intervals - 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours. The specimens were rectangular plates with a circular hole at their center and along the interface. This hole serves as fracture initiation point when subjected to uniaxial load perpendicular to the interface during the fracture toughness test. This test created a controlled fracture where the fracture length increases proportionally to the load increment. Measurements for the fracture length were taken at different load input levels. This information, along with the specimen geometry, and the load and displacement record, served to calculate the fracture toughness of each specimen using Griffith's principles. The ultimate load approach and the mid-point approach were used to analyze the results from this test. The ultimate load approach provided lower coefficient of variability in the scenarios of thick 25mm specimens than for the thin ones; while the mid-point approach provided lower coefficient of variability for the thin 12mm specimens than the ultimate load approach. This is because the mid-point approach truncates the results to minimize the buckling effect. The thick time variable specimens resulted in low coefficient of variability using both approaches. The time variable testing was stopped at a maximum load close to that corresponding to the midpoint approach. Validation of the compressive test was completed by using the standard Compact Tension (CT) procedure where one of the time variable scenarios was tested. This served to prove that the methodology for creating the annealed surface is reliable and it delivers a weakly bonded interface. Nevertheless, more CT testing is recommended to form a relationship between the uniaxial compression test and the standard CT methodology. Furthermore, an experimental procedure is explained for the hydraulic fracturing emulation using a cohesive cube within a costume made set up.

Book excerpt: As engineering materials and structures often contain a metal or metallic alloy bonded to a ceramic, the resultant interface must be able to sustain mechanical forces without failure. They also play an important role in oxidation or reduction of materials. The workshop on 'Bonding, Structure and Mechanical Properties of Metal/Ceramic Interfaces' was held in January 1989 within the Acta/Scripta Metallurgica conference series. It drew together an international collection of 70 scientists who discussed a wide range of issues related to metal-ceramic interfaces. The sessions were divided into 7 categories: structure and bonding, chemistry at interfaces, formation of interfaces, structure of interfaces, thermodynamics/atomistics of interface fracture, mechanics of interface cracks, and fracture resistance of bimaterial interfaces. Within these headings attention was paid to grain boundaries, the influence of chemical processes on the behaviour of interfaces, diffusion bonding, characterization of fracture, and crack propagation by fatigue and by stress corrosion. The book presents a useful reference source for materials scientists, physicists, chemists, and mechanical engineers who are concerned with the roles and properties of interfaces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chicken bone you nibbled yesterday and threw away was a high-tech product! Not only that: it was a superlative light-weight design, functionally adapted to its mechanical requirements. No engineer in the world has, as yet, been able to copy this structural member, which is excellently optimized in its external shape and its internal architecture as regards minimum weight and maximum strength. The tree stem on which you recently carved your initials has also, by life-long care for its body, steadily improved its internal and external structure and adapted optimally to new loads. In the course of its biomechanical self-optimization it will heal up the notch you cut as speedily as possible, in order to repair even the smallest weak point, which might otherwise cost it its life in the next storm. This book is dedicated to the understanding of this biomechanical optimization of shape. It is the synthesis of many years of extensive research using the latest computer methods at the Karlsruhe Research Centre to help understand the mechanism of biological self-optimization (adaptive growth) and to simulate it by computer. The method newly developed for this purpose was called CAO (Computer-Aided Optimization). With this method, it is possible to predict the growth of trees, bones and other biological structures from the tiger's claw to the sea urchin's skeleton.

Book excerpt: A plate composed of two dissimilar materials, bonded together along a straight line with a center crack was studied. This problem represents an idealization of an adhesive joint or a composite structure with an interfacial flaw or crack caused by faulty joining techniques. Common examples are imperfections, voids, or broken bonds on the composite interface. Combined with the finite element technique, the strain energy method and the J-integral method have been extended to a bi-material problem to calculate the value of the strain energy rate. A general relationship between strain energy rate and total stress intensity factor is then derived using the crack closure technique. The ratio of stress intensity factors was also examined. The numerical analysis concentrated on three categories of composite materials with moduli ratio 1, 20, and 120. These results provide a complete crack-tip stress analysis and are needed for the study and understanding of the fracture mechanics of bi-material problems. Lastly, the compliance method was employed for experimental verification of the numerical results. An aluminum alloy-epoxy bi-material plate with a moduli ratio equal to 20 was examined. This study has yielded useful results in terms of the analytical tools to guide further experimental fracture studies of adhesive joints and composite materials. (Author, modified-PL).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text book provides the theoretical background of rock fracture mechanics and displacement discontinuity methods used for the modelling of geomechanical problems. The computer program FRACOD is used to analyse the fracture problems, assessing fracture initiation and propagation in tension (Mode I), shear (Mode II) and mixed mode I and II of solid intact or jointed geomaterials. The book also presents the fundamentals of thermo-mechanical coupling and hydro-mechanical coupling. Formulations of multiple regional mechanical, thermal and hydraulic functions, which allow analyses of fracture mechanics problems for structures made of brittle, rock-like materials, are provided. In addition, instructive examples of code verification and applications are presented. Additional material: The 2-D version of the FRACOD program, a manual on the program and a wealth of verification examples of classical problems in physics, mechanics and hydromechanics are available at http://extras.springer.com. A large number of applications related to civil, mining, petroleum and environmental engineering are also included. - The first textbook available on modelling of rock fracture propagation - Introduces readers to the fundamentals of rock fracturing - Uses a modern style of teaching with theory, mathematical modelling and applications in one package - The basic version of the FRACOD software, manual, verification examples and applications are available as additional material - The FRACOD program and manual enable the readers to solve fracture propagation problems on their own --------------------------- Ki-Bok Min, Department of Energy Resources Engineering, College of Engineering, Seoul National University, Korea “Challenging rock engineering applications require extreme conditions of stress, temperature and hydraulic pressure resulting in rock fracturing to a various extent. The FRACOD is one of few computer codes available in engineering rock mechanics that can simulate the initiation and propagation of fractures often interacting with natural fractures. Its capability has been significantly enhanced to include the hydraulic and thermal fracturing with concerted interaction from multi-national research and industry partners. My experience with the FRACOD is very positive and I am certain that its already-excellent track record will expand further in the future."
