The measured mass flows are correlated with inviscid flow as a measure of the canopy's accommodation of the air mass available at the mouth inlet under specific operation conditions. In conjunction with the actual measurements of mass flow, the pressure distributions on the internal and external canopy surfaces were determined. These measurements were made on models with suspension lines as well as on models without suspension lines so that suitable estimates of suspension line effects could be made. Measurements were made at Mach 0.8, 1.2, and 3.0. In addition, several tests were conducted in the wake of an ogive cylinder located at two upstream positions. (Author).

A pressurized subsonic wind tunnel served as the flow facility. The average approach flow velocity was 134 feet per second. The measurements were made in the Reynolds number range of one million to ten million, where the Reynolds number is based on the ribbon width of 2.1 inches and on the velocity and temperature of the flow in the slots between the ribbons. The pressure ratio applied to the ribbon was varied from 1.4 to 26.3. Using a transient energy balance, local and average heat transfer data were obtained and compared with available analyses.

Comparison of flight results indicates that theoretical snatch force values were never exceeded when the deployment techniques of these tests were used. Opening loads showed no definite trend with Mach number. Values for filling times compared favorably with generally accepted empirical curves based on 15-percent geometric porosity. Canopy stability was good when Mach numbers were below 1.4 for the modified-ringsail and disk-gap-band configurations.

Wind tunnel studies are described in which the validity of the assumptions has been checked by means of models of a modified guide surface canopy combined with a shock producing cone. A configuration was found according to which 4 inch textile models function satisfactorily up to Mach numbers of 4.5. The results of further supersonic wind tunnel tests are shown in which a 4 ft supersonic guide surface parachute, built in accordance with the established aerodynamic parameters, functioned satisfactorily. This parachute collapsed due to structural weakness at a Mach number of 2.8 after being exposed to supersonic flow for approximately 90 minutes. The concept of the wake producing cone in conjunction with ribbon parachute canopies was also tried, but no satisfactory configuration was found. (Author).

The parachutes were forcibly deployed from an air-launched test vehicle at altitudes from 55,000 feet to 70,000 feet and at Mach numbers between 0.92 and 1.52. Opening shock, steady-state drag performance, and canopy-porosity effects are evaluated with respect to Mach number and dynamic pressure. The conical canopy design appears to function far better than the flat canopy at supersonic deployment speeds. The relatively high-porosity conical design improves the parachute stability, with the added benefit of a low opening shock. The drag efficiency of the conical canopy is equivalent to that of the flat canopy having 50-percent-lower porosity. Riser elasticity and length also appear to be important parameters affecting the parachute stability. Reducing the weight of the test vehicle by a factor of one-third had a negligible effect on the stability and drag characteristics of the parachute.

The design, fabrication, and packing of the parachute system are discussed. Low altitude drop tests were made with F-4 and A-4 aircraft at Mach numbers from 0.57 to 1.22, and rocket-boosted tests were made at Mach numbers from 1.62 to 1.70, the latter corresponding to a maximum dynamic pressure of 2720 psf (130 kN/m2). The maximum measured snatch load, reefed stage opening shock, and second stage opening shock were approximately 65 klb (289 kN), 165 klb (734 kN) and 150 klb (667 kN), respectively. The measured load data and sequence of parachute function times are relatively consistent and repeatable. There is no discernible effect of Mach number on the steady state drag area of the reefed parachute at Mach numbers from 0.7 to 1.50.
