Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material in this volume provides the basic theory necessary to understand the principles behind imaging the subsurface of the Earth using reflection and refraction seismology. For reflection seismology, the end product is a "record section" from a collection of "wiggly traces" that are recorded in the field from which information about the properties of subsurface structure and rock can be derived. For the most part, the principles of imaging are the same regardless of the depth to the target; the same mathematical background is necessary for targeting a shallow water table as for investigating the base of the earth's continental "crust" at a depth of 30-50 km.

Book excerpt: Fourier Transforms and Convolutions for the Experimentalist provides the experimentalist with a guide to the principles and practical uses of the Fourier transformation. It aims to bridge the gap between the more abstract account of a purely mathematical approach and the rule of thumb calculation and intuition of the practical worker. The monograph springs from a lecture course which the author has given in recent years and for which he has drawn upon a number of sources, including a set of notes compiled by the late Dr. I. C. Browne from a series of lectures given by Mr. J . A. Ratcliffe of the Cavendish Laboratory. The book begins with an introduction to Fourier Transform. It provides a definition o Fourier Transform, describes its applications, and presents the formal mathematical statement of the transform. Separate chapters discuss the elementary transform, extended functions, and direct applications of Fourier transforms. The final two chapters deal with limitations, products, and convolutions; and the differentiation of Fourier transforms.

Book excerpt: Correlation Theory of Stationary and Related Random Functions is an elementary introduction to the most important part of the theory dealing only with the first and second moments of these functions. This theory is a significant part of modern probability theory and offers both intrinsic mathematical interest and many concrete and practical applications. Stationary random functions arise in connection with stationary time series which are so important in many areas of engineering and other applications. This book presents the theory in such a way that it can be understood by readers without specialized mathematical backgrounds, requiring only the knowledge of elementary calculus. The first volume in this two-volume exposition contains the main theory; the supplementary notes and references of the second volume consist of detailed discussions of more specialized questions, some more additional material (which assumes a more thorough mathematical background than the rest of the book) and numerous references to the extensive literature.

Book excerpt: Mathematics for Electronic Technology is a nine-chapter book that begins with the elucidation of the introductory concepts related to use of mathematics in electronic engineering, including differentiation, integration, partial differentiation, infinite series, vectors, vector algebra, and surface, volume and line integrals. Subsequent chapters explore the determinants, differential equations, matrix analysis, complex variable, topography, graph theory, and numerical analysis used in this field. The use of Fourier method for harmonic analysis and the Laplace transform is also described. The material in this book will be very helpful to undergraduates taking an electronic engineering course.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analogues for the Solution of Boundary-Value Problems considers the simulation of integral methods of solving boundary-value problems. This book is organized into 11 chapters. After the introduction provided in Chapter I, the formulation of some important engineering problems that reduce to the solution of partial differential equations is reviewed in Chapter II. Chapter III covers the mathematical methods for the solution of problems, such as the thermal problem of electrode graphitization and underground coal gasification. The theory of the physical processes of electrical simulation and principles involved in the construction of analogues is elaborated in Chapter IV, while the measurements in electrical analogues is deliberated in Chapter V. Chapters VI to VIII describe the construction of network analyzers and star-integrating networks. The methods of physical simulation for the solution of certain boundary-value problems are analyzed in Chapter IX. Chapters X and XI are devoted to future improvements and developments in analogues for the solution of boundary-value problems. This publication is intended for college students and specialists engaged in solving boundary-value problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are all familiar with impact. Lesser impacts such as hammering a nail, cracking an egg or stubbing a toe are part of everyday life. More violent impacts such as those caused by car crashes or bullets are fortunately less common but are still well enough known to be taken for granted. Very violent impacts such as meteorites striking the earth are outside our personal experience but we are aware of them. Despite this, impacts remain mysterious. They occur too quickly for us to follow what is happening and the evidence they leave behind is often ambiguous. Over the last thirty years improvements in high speed instrumen tation and developments in computing have made them more comprehensible and an increasing amount of attention is being paid to the subject which is an area of expanding scientific and engineering research. A multi-disciplinary approach is not yet established and information is scattered in many places and expressed in a variety of jargons. In applied mathematics, impacts have provided interesting theoretical problems with elegant solutions but it has been difficult to check results experimentally. Impacts can change the behaviour of materials but similar changes can sometimes be produced in other ways and the underlying mechanisms are not clear. Empirical solutions to engineering problems have worked reasonably well but it is hard to know what to do if things go wrong.

Book excerpt: In virtually all types of experiments in which a response is analyzed as a function of frequency (e. g. , a spectrum), transform techniques can significantly improve data acquisition and/or data reduct ion. Research-level nuclear magnet ic resonance and infra-red spectra are already obtained almost exclusively by Fourier transform methods, because Fourier transform NMR and IR spectrometers have been commercially available since the late 1960·s. Similar transform techniques are equally valuable (but less well-known) for a wide range of other chemical applications for which commercial instruments are only now becoming available: for example, the first corrmercial Fourier transform mass spectrometer was introduced this year (1981) by Nicolet Instrument Corporation. The purpose of this volume is to acquaint practicing chemists with the basis, advantages, and applica of Fourier, Hadamard, and Hilbert transforms in chemistry. For tions almost all chapters, the author is the investigator who was the first to apply such methods in that field. The basis and advantages of transform techniques are described in Chapter 1. Many of these aspects were understood and first applied by infrared astronomers in the 1950·s, in order to improve the otherwise unacceptably poor signal-to-noise ratio of their spec tra. However, the computations required to reduce the data were painfully slow, and required a 1 arge computer.
