Book excerpt: Hydrogenated amorphous Silicon (a-Si:H) Thin Film Transistor (TFT) has many advantages and is one of the suitable choices to implement Active Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode (AMOLED) displays. However, the aging of a-Si:H TFT caused by electrical stress affects the stability of pixel performance. To solve this problem, following aspects are important: (1) compact device models and parameter extraction methods for TFT characterization and circuit simulation; (2) a method to simulate TFT aging by using circuit simulator so that its impact on circuit performance can be investigated by using circuit simulation; and (3) novel pixel circuits to compensate the impact of TFT aging on circuit performance. These challenges are addressed in this thesis.

Book excerpt: We developed an AIM-Spice model for Organic Thin Film Transistor (OTFT) circuit simulation based on amorphous-silicon approach. The OTFT developed in this research is made using P3HT (poly-3-hexylthiophene) and is fabricated by using photolithography and spin coating process. The P3HT OTFT is tested by source meters which are controlled by Labview to get drain/source current vs. drain/source voltage curve and drain/source current vs. gate/source voltage curve. These results are used in the model parameters calculation by fitting the parameters to the behavior of our polymer device.

Book excerpt: The ability to scale CMOS while keeping power density roughly constant represents a significant limitation to meeting late stage International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS) 1 specifications. Neuronal computational systems provide an alternative to binary systems, and by design are extremely power efficient due to massive parallelism. One way to achieve the high level of interconnectivity and low power density seen in the nervous system is to use amorphous silicon devices in the interconnect layers of a CMOS stack. The aim of this work is to correlate amorphous silicon TFT electrical characteristics to physical characterization results. Device materials and processing conditions were varied to find trends in the extracted parameters. An optimum in the experiment space was found, and the device was modeled using AIM-SPICE. An example neuromorphic circuit was simulated using this model, which showed low power dissipation. The feasibility of using amorphous silicon in neuromorphic applications is thus demonstrated.

Book excerpt: Although this is the 16th volume in a long-standing and successful series, the focus is no longer limited to hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). The distinction between short- and medium-range order, and between homogeneous and heterogeneous semiconductor materials, is indeed too difficult to maintain. Instead, the volume covers amorphous and microcrystalline silicon from materials physics to new applications. Papers from a joint session with a symposium on Flat-Panel Display Materials and Large-Area Processes are included. The volume also features special focused sessions on heterogeneous materials, color sensors and radiation imaging, and parameter extraction and device modelling. Topics include: amorphous and polycrystalline thin-film transistors; solar cells; color and X-ray sensors, novel devices, luminescence and sensitization; device modelling and parameter extraction; growth, alloys and clathrates; metastability, hydrogen, atomic and electronic structure; defects and charge transport; and heterogeneous silicon - formation, properties and devices.

It proposes the novel Inkjet-Configurable Gate Array (IGA) concept as a design-manufacturing method for the direct mapping of digital functions on top of new prefabricated structures. The thesis begins by providing details on the generation of the IGA bulk, and subsequently presents Drop-on-Demand configurable methodologies for the metallization of IGAs. Lastly, it demonstrates IGAs’ suitability for personalization and yield improvement, and reports on the integration of various circuits into IGA bulk. In addition to highlighting novel results, the thesis also offers a comprehensive introduction to printed electronics, from technology development, to design methods, tools and kits.

Book excerpt: Thin-film transistors (TFTs) are the key element in the low cost large area electronics such as flat panel displays and sensor arrays. TFTs based on amorphous and polycrystalline silicon are the current industrial standard. However, amorphous silicon transistors are limited by the low charge carrier mobility and device stability, whereas polycrystalline silicon transistors are still relatively expensive due to the needs for additional annealing and/or crystallization steps. Microcrystalline silicon transistors have recently emerged to combine the distinctive advantages of both technologies with the exclusion of their disadvantages. In this thesis, transistors with distinctively high charge carrier mobilities exceeding 50 cm2/Vs were realized, which are more than 50 times higher than amorphous silicon transistors. Several aspects were investigated following the realization of transistors with high charge carrier mobility. These include the correlation of the material properties with the device properties, the influence of contact effects and post-fabrication thermal annealing on the transistor performances. In addition to these, inverter circuits based on microcrystalline silicon transistors were realized and the influence of the transistor parameters on the performance of the inverters were investigated.

Book excerpt: The recent developments of high resolution flat panel imagers have prompted interests in fabricating smaller on-pixel transistors to obtain higher fill factor and faster speed. This thesis presents fabrication and modeling of short channel amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) vertical thin film transistors (VTFT). A variety of a-Si:H VTFTs with different channel lengths, from 100 nm to 1 [mu]m, are successfully fabricated using the discussed processing steps. Different structural and electrical characteristics of the fabricated device are measured. The results of I-V and C-V characteristics are comprehensively discussed. The 100 nm channel length transistor performance is diverged from regular long channel TFT characteristics, as the short channel effects become dominant in the device, giving rise to necessity of having a physical model to explain such effects. An above threshold model for a-Si:H VTFT current characteristics is extracted. The transport mechanisms are explained and simulated for amorphous silicon material to be used in the device model. The final model shows good agreement with experimental results. However, we used numerical simulation, run in Medici, to further verify the model validity. Simulation allows us to vary different device and material parameters in order to optimize fabrication process for VTFT. The capacitance behavior of the device is extensively studied alongside with a TFT breakdown discussion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work takes advantage of high-resolution silicon stencil masks to build air-stable complementary OTFTs using a low-temperature fabrication process. Plastic electronics based on organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) pave the way for cheap, flexible and large-area products. Over the past few years, OTFTs have undergone remarkable advances in terms of reliability, performance and scale of integration. Many factors contribute to the allure of this technology; the masks exhibit excellent stiffness and stability, thus allowing OTFTs with submicrometer channel lengths and superb device uniformity to be patterned. Furthermore, the OTFTs employ an ultra-thin gate dielectric that provides a sufficiently high capacitance to enable the transistors to operate at voltages as low as 3 V. The critical challenges in this development are the subtle mechanisms that govern the properties of aggressively scaled OTFTs. These mechanisms, dictated by device physics, are well described and implemented into circuit-design tools to ensure adequate simulation accuracy.
