Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1986 and 1990, a large database was compiled at AEDC from the results of a series of wind tunnel experiments investigating the aerodynamics of flow over open cavities. The database, known as the Weapons Internal Carriage and Separation (WICS) database, covered four experiments that were completed in the AEDC wind tunnels. The initial database documentation focused on the test and data, but included very little analysis of the results. The purpose of the present work is to report analysis of the cavity acoustics and trajectory data. In addition, an updated engineering mathematical model for cavity aeroacoustics is presented.

This book was released on 1962 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theory is developed for the resonant frequencies and pressure amplifications of a rectangular cavity of arbitrary dimensions in a flow field. An intermediate step involves the derivation of radiation impedance for a cavity at all Mach numbers, using the concepts of retarded pot ntial t eory. Experim ntal results are given for small cavities tested in the subsonic regime and for cavities up to 8 in. in length at supersonic Mach numbers from 1.75 to 5 0. Comparisons are drawn between theoretical and experimental frequency and amplitude response, indicating that the theory developed gives very good definition of the problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vibro-Acoustics of Lightweight Sandwich Structures introduces the study of the coupled vibration and acoustic behavior of lightweight sandwich structures in response to harmonic force and sound pressure. This book focuses on the theoretical modeling and experimental investigation of lightweight sandwich structures in order to provide a predictive framework for vibro-acoustic characteristics of typical engineering structures. Furthermore, by developing solution tools, it concentrates on the influence of key systematic parameters leading to effective guidance for optimal structure design toward lightweight, high-stiffness and superior sound insulation capability. This book is intended for researchers, scientists, engineers and graduate students in mechanical engineering especially in structural mechanics, mechanics and acoustics. Fengxian Xin and Tianjian Lu both work at the School of Aerospace, Xi’an Jiaotong University.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a unified approach to acoustics and vibration suitable for use in advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate courses on vibration and fluids. The book includes thorough treatment of vibration of harmonic oscillators, coupled oscillators, isotropic elasticity, and waves in solids including the use of resonance techniques for determination of elastic moduli. Drawing on 35 years of experience teaching introductory graduate acoustics at the Naval Postgraduate School and Penn State, the author presents a hydrodynamic approach to the acoustics of sound in fluids that provides a uniform methodology for analysis of lumped-element systems and wave propagation that can incorporate attenuation mechanisms and complex media. This view provides a consistent and reliable approach that can be extended with confidence to more complex fluids and future applications. Understanding Acoustics opens with a mathematical introduction that includes graphing and statistical uncertainty, followed by five chapters on vibration and elastic waves that provide important results and highlight modern applications while introducing analytical techniques that are revisited in the study of waves in fluids covered in Part II. A unified approach to waves in fluids (i.e., liquids and gases) is based on a mastery of the hydrodynamic equations. Part III demonstrates extensions of this view to nonlinear acoustics. Engaging and practical, this book is a must-read for graduate students in acoustics and vibration as well as active researchers interested in a novel approach to the material.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research presented in this report has been directed to study the effects of mass injection into the flow upstream of a cavity to understand the weapon bay cavity's flow field and its aeroacoustics. The objective also was to control the development of upstream boundary layer, and therefore, to control the development of the shear layer over the cavity. Control of the shear layer has enabled us to significantly reduce or to fully eliminate the weapons bay's aeroacoustic interactions. This study was performed in a wind tunnel at several nominal Mach numbers between 0.5 to 1.8 and at unit Reynolds numbers up. (AN).

Measurements were performed for a number of injection distributions. The large amplitude oscillations measured without mass injection was successfully and totally eliminated with proper mass injection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The manipulation of cells and microparticles within microfluidic systems using external forces is valuable for many microscale analytical and bioanalytical applications. Acoustofluidics is the ultrasound-based external forcing of microparticles with microfluidic systems. It has gained much interest because it allows for the simple label-free separation of microparticles based on their mechanical properties without affecting the microparticles themselves. Microscale Acoustofluidics provides an introduction to the field providing the background to the fundamental physics including chapters on governing equations in microfluidics and perturbation theory and ultrasound resonances, acoustic radiation force on small particles, continuum mechanics for ultrasonic particle manipulation, and piezoelectricity and application to the excitation of acoustic fields for ultrasonic particle manipulation. The book also provides information on the design and characterization of ultrasonic particle manipulation devices as well as applications in acoustic trapping and immunoassays. Written by leading experts in the field, the book will appeal to postgraduate students and researchers interested in microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip applications.
