Book excerpt: Abstract: Analytic models predict the possibility of extending the range of performance parameters of Pulsed Plasma Thrusters (PPT) by using propellants other than the traditionally used Teflon. A theoretical and experimental effort was initiated at The Ohio State University to investigate the use of alternative propellants for PPT. Analytical and numerical calculations (MACH2) indeed indicate a significant broadening of the obtainable range of specific impulse and thrust-to-power ratios when alternative propellants such as lithium or water are utilized. Consequently, in an effort to investigate changes in physical phenomena and thruster performance experimentally, a hybrid thruster was designed and built, facilitating the use of alternatively water or Teflon. The thruster design includes a unique water propellant feed system, allowing the supply of the water propellant without detrimentally affecting the inherent simplicity of the PPT system. ii The thruster operation and performance was investigated by several different diagnostic methods, including current and voltage measurements, Langmuir probes, and magnetic field probes. Furthermore, impact pressure measurements in the plume of the thruster allowed new insight into the plume structure and the accurate evaluation of impulse bits. Employment of the diagnostic methods for Teflon and water propellant enabled the unambigous identification of propellant related effects such as reduced electron temperature and higher exhaust velocites in the case of water propellant. The electromagnetic nature of the water thruster was clearly identified. For 30 J discharge energy, the water thruster requires only 5% of the mass bit of a Teflon thruster to produce an impulse bit 30% of the magnitude of the Teflon thruster, suggesting greatly increased propellant efficiencies. In agreement with the plasma diagnostic results, a specific impulse for the water thruster of up to 8000 s and efficiencies of up to 16% were evaluated.

Book excerpt: This final report presents the results of a three-year theoretical and experimental investigation into the fundamentals of gas-fed pulsed plasma thrusters (GF-PPTs). The primary goals were to deepen the basic understanding of how the performance of these devices can be optimized and scaled down to low pulse energies for application as efficient high-specific electric thrusters on small spacecraft. This final report gives a detailed overview of previous research, discusses the electromagnetic nature of the acceleration process, the effect of capacitance, electrode geometry, inductance-per-unit length, and discharge initiation on performance, and presents theoretically derived and experimentally verified performance scaling laws.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulsed plasma plume diagnostic studies performed in the past have shown that considerable uncertainty exists because of the degree of backscatter encountered in ground test facilities. The large level of backscatter is attributable to the extremely high mass expulsion rate characteristic of solid propellant pulsed plasma thrusters (30 to 40 g/s on the average). The study reported upon herein had the objective of obtaining a suitable analytic model and computational scheme for calculation of the plume characteristics of a 23 mN-s pulsed plasma thruster. The calculated results were compared to experimental measurements of electron number density and temperature, obtained using specially designed Langmuir probes, only up to the point in the time when backscatter of plume effluents off the vacuum chamber walls became significant. A secondary objective of the program was to design a suitable driver circuit for the Langmuir Sangmuir probes so that a voltage ramp could be pulsed for one microsecond at any given time subsequent to thruster discharge initiation and the volt-ampere characteristic could be displayed on an XY oscilloscope.

Book excerpt: The work performed in this 2-year effort involved two tasks: one dealing with issues related to laser energy absorption in a pulsed thruster and the other dealing with issues related to laser energy absorption in a CW thruster. For the pulsed studies, the first year's effort involved theoretical and experimental investigations of the threshold requirements for achieving laser-induced gas breakdown at short wavelengths (

Book excerpt: This paper summarizes preliminary experimental and theoretical research that was directed towards the study of quasisteady-state power flow in a large, un-optimized, multi-megawatt coaxial plasma thruster. The report addresses large coaxial thruster operation and includes evaluation and interpretation of the experimental results with a view to the development of efficient, steady-state megawatt-class magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) thrusters. Book excerpt: The basic idea that motivated this research effort is the prospect that a series of time z-pinch plasma implosions could be used to sequentially propel a projectile to high velocities. Such a process would provide a new type of electrically driven gun with the potential for achieving projectile velocities well above those attainable by chemical guns. The concept in its earliest form appears to have the attractive feature of being potentially rep-ratable. The current flows axially along sections of the accelerator instead of perpendicular to the projectile path as in a rail gun, i.e., plasma pressure propels the projectile, not the jxB force. The primary objective of this research was to design a test module which, if built, could be used to investigate the effectiveness of such z-pinch implosions for projectile propulsion. Other objectives were to examine background experimental information on z-pinch implosions and to explore a range of parameters using a lumped-parameter computer model for the implosions and their driving circuits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work presented in this report is an investigation of the plasma flow on a Teflon Pulsed Plasma Thruster (PPT), and the resulting plume. The long range goal is a theoretical model of the flow, both between and beyond the thruster electrodes, that could aid in the improvement of performance, and also predict the contamination potential of the device. The overall model required consists of an internal portion interfaced with an external portion at the exit plane of the electrodes. Most of this report deals with the internal portion of the model. Specifically, the physics of the discharge and plasma acceleration between the electrodes are discussed, and a mathematical model is developed which appears to be consistant with the available experimental data. The investigation shows the necessity of certain additional information without which the model cannot be properly exercised. The validity of certain assumptions of magnetohydrodynamic theory is demonstrated for the nontypical plasma produced by the PPT, and logical consequences of the assumptions are considered vis a vis recently obtained electromagnetic data. A major difficulty in the modeling of the internal flow is the selection of the proper boundary conditions to be applied to the solution domain. These include conditions at the electrodes, the insulator, the ablating Teflon surfaces, and the interface with the vacuum ahead of, and behind, the plasma blobs. Keywords include: Pulsed plasma; Plume modeling; Teflon pulsed plasma.

Book excerpt: A study was carried out to determine an appropriate space experiment for the millipound pulsed plasma thruster. The objectives of the experiment were: (1) Verification of ground based measurements related to thruster performance, plume and plume effects characterization, and electromagnetic compatibility; (2) Make such measurements that cannot be accurately made in ground based facilities; (3) Demonstrate the operation of the PPT in the space environment and its compatibility with typical space craft systems. Three vehicle options were considered in the study, and a cost analysis based on 1981 dollars was carried out. (Author).
