Book excerpt: Studies on ultimate limit states and nonlinear behaviors of bridges will greatly enhance the understanding of bridge engineers on the moment and shear distribution and the general performance of bridges under load. Described herein is an experimental and theoretical investigation of ultimate loads and nonlinear behaviors of two-span continuous composite curved multi-cell box-girder bridges with a single column as middle support and subjected to OHBDC design truck loadings. The curved bridges are modeled by using the finite element methods. The deck slab, webs, the bottom plate and diaphragms are modeled by 4-node shell elements while the shear connectors and the single middle column are modeled by 3-D beam elements. The existing software COSMOS/M is used for the analysis. A model test of a two-span continuous composite curved multi-cell box-girder bridge with a single column at the middle support is conducted to verify the finite element method. Idealized bridges with different parameters are also studied. Consideration is given to many of the variables that significantly influence ultimate loads and nonlinear behaviors of such bridges. Several rational suggestions are made to enhance the design of two-span continuous composite curved four-cell box-girder bridges.

During the construction stage, however, the behavior is not well understood. The usual practice of assuming the system to be non-composite during construction requires substantial top flange bracing to form a quasi-closed box section. Composite box girders with live loading, and girders during construction, have to be evaluated during the design of curved steel trapezoidal box girder bridges. Considering both cases, the design for construction loading is the least understood and is the most important. Stresses due to construction loading can reach up to 60-70 percent of the total design stress for a given cross section. A three-phase study was undertaken to investigate the behavior of curved trapezoidal box girders during construction.

Book excerpt: Continuous curved box girder bridges are increasingly being used in metropolitan large cities particularly as flyovers and as entrance and exit ramps for highspeed freeways. The purpose of this investigation is to examine the static response of continuous curved box girder bridges subjected to various specified OHBD loadings. The prototype structure that was selected for this model study is the Cyrville road Queensway overpass located in the east end of Ottawa. The structure was built in 1973 and designed according to ASHTO design truck load HS20-44 by the Ministry of Transportation and Communication. The bridge is 102.4 meters long, 12.8 meters wide, and consists of two spans with 16.8$\sp\circ$ horizontal angle of curvature between the end supports. Its cross section consists of four contiguous cells with a depth of 1.83 meters. As for the diaphragms, two prestressed diaghragms are placed at the extreme end supports and one is placed over the middle support.

Book excerpt: To better understand the behaviour of curved box girder bridges in resisting eccentric design truck loads, and the influence of plan curvature on the structural response, a model study was conducted at the University of Ottawa. In this study, the elastic response of a curved composite box girder bridge model was evaluated experimentally and confirmed analytically using the finite element method. Analytical predictions of both vertical displacements and normal stresses at critical sections compared fairly well with those evaluated experimentally. The isoparametric thin shell element employed in the analysis proved to be versatile and provided an accurate representation of the various structural components of a curved box girder bridge. Despite the eccentric nature of the applied OHBDC design truck loads and the bridge plan curvature, it was evident that in resisting the applied live loads, the girders at critical sections share equal proportions of the applied bending moments.
