Book excerpt: On vehicles with swept wings, leading edge vortices are created at off-design conditions, Ref. 1. The leading edge vortex generally has a beneficial effect in the form of increased lift. By controlling the location of the shed vortex or vortices, vehicle roll and pitch control may be possible. Uninhabited Combat Air Vehicles (UCAV) that utilize stealth to avoid detection suffer a radar signature increase when control surfaces are deflected. Thus, there is an advantage to be gained by limiting flap deflection by utilizing vortex flow control to change vehicle attitude. In view of this, an experimental and numerical investigation was conducted on a representative UCAV configuration to define the flowfield and investigate methods to control vortex location, and ultimately, vehicle attitude. In view of this, a test program was carried out to identify the flow features of a representative UCAV configuration and utilize a simple blowing jet near the nose of the vehicle to attempt vortex flow control.

Book excerpt: Here is a basic introduction to Lattice Boltzmann models that emphasizes intuition and simplistic conceptualization of processes, while avoiding the complex mathematics that underlies LB models. The model is viewed from a particle perspective where collisions, streaming, and particle-particle/particle-surface interactions constitute the entire conceptual framework. Beginners and those whose interest is in model application over detailed mathematics will find this a powerful 'quick start' guide. Example simulations, exercises, and computer codes are included.

Book excerpt: An investigation of vortex shedding downstream of a cascade of compressor stator blades, at off-design inlet-flow angles of 35, 33 and 31 degrees and Reynolds numbers, based on chord length, of 625,000, 750,000 and 800,000 is reported. The objective of the study was to characterize the flow and vortex shedding through blade surface pressure measurements and hot-wire anemometry. Vortex shedding was determined to be a leading edge phenomenon as periodic shedding was only detected on the pressure side of the wake, The relationship between vortex shedding frequency and Reynolds number was nearly linear. The vortex shedding frequency at three incidence angles was observed to be quite similar at lower Reynolds number (i.e. 450,000 and below) but developed into a larger scatter at higher Reynolds number. Similarly, the Strouhal numbers were observed to be fairly consistent (0.22 to 0.24) at low Reynolds number and more scattered (0.18 to 0.25) with increasing Reynolds number. The result obtained was comparable to the experimental results obtained by Roshko Ref. 14, for vortex shedding behind a circular cylinder.

Book excerpt: Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is a relatively new simulation technique for the modeling of complex fluid systems and has attracted interest from researchers in computational physics. Unlike the traditional CFD methods, which solve the conservation equations of macroscopic properties (i.e., mass, momentum, and energy) numerically, LBM models the fluid consisting of fictive particles, and such particles perform consecutive propagation and collision processes over a discrete lattice mesh. This book will cover the fundamental and practical application of LBM. The first part of the book consists of three chapters starting form the theory of LBM, basic models, initial and boundary conditions, theoretical analysis, to improved models. The second part of the book consists of six chapters, address applications of LBM in various aspects of computational fluid dynamic engineering, covering areas, such as thermo-hydrodynamics, compressible flows, multicomponent/multiphase flows, microscale flows, flows in porous media, turbulent flows, and suspensions. With these coverage LBM, the book intended to promote its applications, instead of the traditional computational fluid dynamic method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vortex shedding behind a plate with a square trailing edge was investigated in a water tunnel. Both the case where the shedding occurs naturally and the case where the shedding is "forced" by an applied transverse velocity field were studied. The perturba- tion velocity at the trailing edge of the plate was calibrated by accurately measuring the velocity at this point using laser doppler anemometry. The spanwise cross-correlation of the fluctuating velocity was determined based on velocity measurements taken at two different spanwise separations; hot film sensors were used to measure the velocities. It was found that high spanwise correlation of the vortex shedding could be induced by applying a low level perturbation at the natural shedding frequency. It was found that there was a threshold below which the vortex shedding was not well correlated. To prove that the correlations were due to an ordering of the vortices as they were shed, rather than being mainly due to the perturbation field, validation tests were conducted. The phenomenon was also studied by flow visualization using hydrogen bubbles illu- minated by a laser. In natural shedding, spanwise waviness of the vortices could be seen clearly in the cross-stream view. This explains the limited spanwise correlation length for this case. On the application of a low-level perturbation this waviness disappeared, corresponding to the high degree of spanwise correlation measured by the hot films.

Book excerpt: An investigation of vortex shedding downstream of a cascade of second-generation, controlled-diffusion, compressor stator blades, at off-design inlet-flow angles of 31, 33 and 35 degrees and Reynolds numbers, based on chord length, of 280,000, 380,000 and 640,000 is reported. The objective of the study was to characterize the flow and shedding through various complementary methods. Blade surface pressure measurements were taken from a fully instrumented blade, and distributions of pressure coefficients were determined. Five-hole probe wake surveys were performed at midspan, and the total pressure loss coefficients and axial velocity ratios were calculated. Upstream inlet-flow angle was set, and further characterized through two-component laser- Doppler velocimetry (LDV). Hot-wire anemometry measurements were performed at midspan, in the wake, and the reduced data were compared with two-component LDV surveys of the same regions. Plots of hot-wire vs. LDV turbulence data are reported in addition to power spectra documenting the shedding events. Vortex shedding was determined to be a leading edge phenomenon as periodic shedding was only detected on the pressure side of the wake. The frequency and magnitude of shedding were found to be independent of incidence angle, and to increase with Reynolds number at constant incidence angle. The Strouhal number, based on leading edge diameter, was found to be in the range of 0.23-0.26, which is comparable to that of vortex shedding behind a circular cylinder in the Reynolds number range tested.

Book excerpt: Flow past circular cylinders with stepwise discontinuities in diameter was investigated experimentally and numerically for the diameter ratio D/d = 2 and three Reynolds numbers, Re = 150, 300, and 1050. The investigation was focused on the vortex shedding phenomena occurring in the wake of the cylinders. In the first series of experimental and numerical studies, the flow development past a single step cylinder was investigated. The single step cylinder model is comprised of a small diameter cylinder (d) attached coaxially to a large diameter cylinder (D). The results show that three distinct spanwise vortex cells form in the step cylinder wake: a single vortex shedding cell in the wake of the small cylinder (the S-cell) and two vortex shedding cells in the wake of the large cylinder, one in the region downstream of the step (the N-cell) and the other away from the step (the L-cell). Due to the differences in vortex shedding frequencies between the three cells, complex vortex connections occur in two vortex-interaction regions located between the adjacent cells. The region at the boundary between the S-cell and the N-cell is relatively narrow and its spanwise extent does not fluctuate significantly. In this region, vortex dislocations manifested as half-loop connections between two S-cell vortices of opposite sign. In contrast, the region at the boundary between the N-cell and the L-cell exhibits a transient behavior, with large scale vortex dislocations causing cyclic variation in the extent of N-cell vortices. For Re = 300 and 1050, small scale streamwise vortices forming in the wake complicate the vortex dynamics within the adjacent S-cell and L-cell. There is no significant Reynolds number effect on the average spanwise extent of the vortex cells and the two transition regions between neighboring cells. Finally, formation of N-cell vortices is linked to downwash fluctuations near the step. The flow development past a dual step cylinder was studied experimentally for Re = 1050. The dual step cylinder model is comprised of a small diameter cylinder (d) and a large diameter cylinder (D) mounted at the mid-span of the small cylinder. The experiments were completed for a range of large cylinder aspect ratios 0.2 [les] L/D [les] 17. The flow development is highly dependent on the aspect ratio of the large cylinder, L/D. The results identify four distinct flow regimes: (i) for L/D = 17, three vortex shedding cells form in the wake of the large cylinder, one central cell and two cells of lower frequency extending over about 4.5D from the large cylinder ends, (ii) for 7

Book excerpt: Large scale coherent structures have been observed in two-dimensional wakes behind bluff bodies as well as non-vortex shedding bodies. There is a strong indication that these large scale structures are related to the two-dimensional instability modes of the slowly diverging mean wake flow. The Orr-Sommerfeld equation admits two solution modes for the two-dimensional plane wake. These are the sinuous mode with antisymmetric streamwise fluctuations and the varicose mode with symmetric streamwise fluctuations. The wake response to controlled sinuous and varicose types of disturbance waves was investigated. Sinuous disturbances at several amplitudes and frequencies were introduced to the wake of a flat plate by oscillating a small trailing edge flap. The Strouhal numbers of the disturbance waves were specially chosen so that the downstream location of the neutral point was well within the range of measurements. The streamwise variation of the half width of the wake an the centerline deficit was dependent on the amplitude level and showed dramatic deviations, starting near the neutral point, at large forcing levels from the well known square root behavior of the unforced case. The measured coherent Reynolds stresses were observed to change sign in the neighborhood of the neutral point as predicted from linear stability theory. The extent of the validity of linear stability theory was investigated. The wake was also forced with a sinuous disturbance of lower Strouhal number that was amplified over the entire range of measurements. (edc).
