Book excerpt: A comprehensive characterisation of different types of woven and nonwoven geotextiles made up of either polyester (PET) or polypropylene (PP) fibers geotextiles was carried out. Although it is rarely performed in routine geotextile investigations, micro fabric analysis of geotextiles was carried out in this study in order to verify whether the geotextile fibre surfaces are manufactured according to the desired geotextile properties. The wettability of geotextiles was determined by contact angle measurements. To investigate the effect of surface treatments on the surface wetting and adhesion of geotextiles, the geotextile fibre surfaces were modified using plasma and wet chemical treatments. Chemical analysis of the surface modification of the geotextile surfaces was carried out by X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS). A series of experimental tests was carried out to measure the geotextile water retention curves. The capillary pressure cell was used to define the drying path water retention curves of different geotextiles covering wide range of factors such as: types of geotextiles, types of manufacturing, type of fibre polymers, and condition of geotextiles. This research showed that the controlled capillary pressure cell can be used to measure reliably the drying geotextile water retention curve successfully in a significant short period of time compared to a conventional hanging column test. Experimental testing and numerical simulations of capillary rise tests in nonwoven geotextiles were carried out in this study. Drying tests along the in-plane direction of nonwoven geotextiles were also performed in order to validate the capillary rise test results of the geotextile materials. It was found that under wetting conditions, geotextiles would behave in cross-plane and in-plane directions much differently than soils.

Book Synopsis Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil (GRS) Walls by : Jonathan T. H. Wu
Download or read book Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil (GRS) Walls written by Jonathan T. H. Wu and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-07-10 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to provide a detailed overview of Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil Walls Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil (GRS) Walls deploy horizontal layers of closely spaced tensile inclusion in the fill material to achieve stability of a soil mass. GRS walls are more adaptable to different environmental conditions, more economical, and offer high performance in a wide range of transportation infrastructure applications. This book addresses both GRS and GMSE, with a much stronger emphasis on the former. For completeness, it begins with a review of shear strength of soils and classical earth pressure theories. It then goes on to examine the use of geosynthetics as reinforcement, and followed by the load-deformation behavior of GRS mass as a soil-geosynthetic composite, reinforcing mechanisms of GRS, and GRS walls with different types of facing. Finally, the book finishes by covering design concepts with design examples for different loading and geometric conditions, and the construction of GRS walls, including typical construction procedures and general construction guidelines. The number of GRS walls and abutments built to date is relatively low due to lack of understanding of GRS. While failure rate of GMSE has been estimated to be around 5%, failure of GRS has been found to be practically nil, with studies suggesting many advantages, including a smaller susceptibility to long-term creep and stronger resistance to seismic loads when well-compacted granular fill is employed. Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil (GRS) Walls will serve as an excellent guide or reference for wall projects such as transportation infrastructure—including roadways, bridges, retaining walls, and earth slopes—that are in dire need of repair and replacement in the U.S. and abroad. Covers both GRS and GMSE (MSE with geosynthetics as reinforcement); with much greater emphasis on GRS walls Showcases reinforcing mechanisms, engineering behavior, and design concepts of GRS and includes many step-by-step design examples Features information on typical construction procedures and general construction guidelines Includes hundreds of line drawings and photos Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil (GRS) Walls is an important book for practicing geotechnical engineers and structural engineers, as well as for advanced students of civil, structural, and geotechnical engineering.

Book Synopsis Geotechnical Modelling by : David Muir Wood
Download or read book Geotechnical Modelling written by David Muir Wood and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modelling forms an implicit part of all engineering design but many engineers engage in modelling without consciously considering the nature, validity and consequences of the supporting assumptions. Derived from courses given to postgraduate and final year undergraduate MEng students, this book presents some of the models that form a part of the typical undergraduate geotechnical curriculum and describes some of the aspects of soil behaviour which contribute to the challenge of geotechnical modelling. Assuming a familiarity with basic soil mechanics and traditional methods of geotechnical design, this book is a valuable tool for students of geotechnical and structural and civil engineering as well as also being useful to practising engineers involved in the specification of numerical or physical geotechnical modelling.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Geotechnical Investigation and Design Tables by : Burt G. Look
Download or read book Handbook of Geotechnical Investigation and Design Tables written by Burt G. Look and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2007-04-26 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical handbook of properties for soils and rock contains, in a concise tabular format, the key issues relevant to geotechnical investigations, assessments and designs in common practice. In addition, there are brief notes on the application of the tables. These data tables are compiled for experienced geotechnical professionals who require a reference document to access key information. There is an extensive database of correlations for different applications. The book should provide a useful bridge between soil and rock mechanics theory and its application to practical engineering solutions. The initial chapters deal with the planning of the geotechnical investigation, the classification of the soil and rock properties and some of the more used testing is then covered. Later chapters show the reliability and correlations that are used to convert that data in the interpretative and assessment phase of the project. The final chapters apply some of these concepts to geotechnical design. This book is intended primarily for practicing geotechnical engineers working in investigation, assessment and design, but should provide a useful supplement for postgraduate courses.
