Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental and Clinical Researches on the Physiology and Pathology of the Spinal Cord, and Some Other Parts of the Nervous Centres Case II. - A young Pole, after a nervous fever, became paralyzed of sensibility and movement in the left side. Anaesthesia in the right side of the face. Coma, - death. Inspection The right side of the Pons is the double of its normal size it extends in front and behind, and there it passes under the right olive, compressing the neighboring parts of the encephalon and the roots of the nerves. The cause of the enlargement of the right side of the Pons was a very large clot of blood. According to Romberg, a case very much like this one is recorded by Dr R. Bright (reports of Med. Cases. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Researches Applied to Physiology and Pathology The independence Of the motor nerves is denied by almost all physiologists. They believe that the nervous centres are the sources Of the vital property of these nerves. They base their Opinion on this fact, that the motor nerves separated from the nervous centres soon lose their property, as it has been seen by Fontana, Haighton, Astley Cooper, Steinrueck, Miiller, Sticker, Gunther, Schoen, Kilian, Stannius, Helmholtz, martin-magron and others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Clinical Treatise on the Diseases of the Nervous System The erudition displayed in Dr. Rosenthal's treatise does not recog nize the boundaries of country, though it is but natural that the author should chiefly refer to the works of his compatriots. We will find in this work, which is not deficient in original observations, a concise but complete expose of important researches upon various questions in nervous pathology by L. Tuerck, Benedikt, Meynert, and other authors of the Vienna School. Among works of this character, which are, in my opinion, too little known among us, I shall restrict myself to calling attention to those which discuss the anatomical lesions of the nervous centres in hydrophobia, the lesions of the arteries in cere bral syphilis, and, finally, the observations which have established, according to Dr. Voigt, the relations of cutaneous anaesthesia and hyperaesthesia with the distribution of the nerves to the integument. The study of foreign works upon nervous diseases has led me to pay attention to certain studies in comparative pathology, which may be applied to the investigation of the changes which morbid types of this class experience, according to climate, nationality, race, etc., but without losing their autonomy. As a rule, we are only able to point out slight shades of difference in a study of this character. But the deviation may sometimes be characterized by more or less profound modifications, even in adjacent countries and under very similar parallels of latitude. Annular or Cortical Sclerosis of the Spinal Cord Dr. Marshall Hall (diseases and Derangements of the Nervous System, 1841) relates the case of a man, aged twenty-eight, with tremor of the right arm and leg, who had a peculiar rocking motion of the eyes, and a degree of stam mering and defective articulation. This was unquestionably an example of Charcot's disease. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Mammalian Nervous System: Its Functions, and Their Localisation Determined by an Electrical Method The accomplishment of this further purpose, viz., the localisation of both paths and centres by ascertaining the excitatory electrical effects in relation with them, was one of the main objects we had in view. In carrying it out we found it was unnecessary to employ the electrometer, and, in fact, that it was advantageous to use the galvanometer, the record of which could be more easily and more accurately noted, since its graduation admits of far higher magnification. Moreover, with this instrument it was possible, by employing a series of stimuli, of known number and duration, to obtain quantitative results of definite comparative value, as will be shown further on; and thus to compare the electrical effects evoked (1) in different central paths by direct stimulation of these, and (2) in any one path by excitation of different regions. The plan upon which the present paper is framed is, first, to give a historical retrospect of the work of authors who have opened up the study of electrical changes in the central and peripheral nervous system; second, to describe at length our mode of experimentation, with special reference to the modifications which we have introduced, then to compare roughly the results we have obtained by our present method with those which had been previously ascertained by the graphic method, and so introduce the description of the facts which we have discovered, elucidating the physiology of the spinal cord both in its relation to the higher centres and to the peripheral nerves. In describing the detailed results of our experiments we have found that it is didicult, from the extent of ground covered by the subject, to adopt a convenient arrangement of facts, and mode of describing the same, which are free from the fault of repetition. We finally determined to gather the results together into definite groups, each associated with the excitation and investigation of particular regions, and refer in the briefest manner to any important principles which were not directly elucidated by, but only involved in, the particular experiments under consideration. Finally, we give at length a summary of the general conclusions which we consider we are justified in drawing from our experimental results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pathological and Practical Researches on Diseases of the Brain and the Spinal Cord IT is a matter df the utmost delicacy for a physician to ob trude upon the profession his general statements, in regard either to the phenomena of disease, or the action of remedies. The value of such statements does not depend upon his vera city only, but must likewise rest, in a very great degree, upon the character which he bears as a philosophical observer, and the extent of the observations on which his conclusions are founded. Hence arises the hesitation with which we receive all general statements, when made by persons with whose opportunities of observation and habits of induction we are not acquainted; and 'the importance which we attach to a simple record of facts, in a concise and accessible form, apart both from hypothesis and system. The author of such a re cord contributes that which has a fixed and certain value, de pendent only upon his correctness in distinctly describing what he has seen; and thus is furnished a series of facts which every practitioner may study for himself, and from which he may acquire a knowledge of phenomena, and of their relations to each other, nearly'in the same manner as he does from his own observation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How we raise young children is one of today's most highly personalized and sharply politicized issues, in part because each of us can claim some level of "expertise." The debate has intensified as discoveries about our development-in the womb and in the first months and years-have reached the popular media. How can we use our burgeoning knowledge to assure the well-being of all young children, for their own sake as well as for the sake of our nation? Drawing from new findings, this book presents important conclusions about nature-versus-nurture, the impact of being born into a working family, the effect of politics on programs for children, the costs and benefits of intervention, and other issues. The committee issues a series of challenges to decision makers regarding the quality of child care, issues of racial and ethnic diversity, the integration of children's cognitive and emotional development, and more. Authoritative yet accessible, From Neurons to Neighborhoods presents the evidence about "brain wiring" and how kids learn to speak, think, and regulate their behavior. It examines the effect of the climate-family, child care, community-within which the child grows.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on the Physiology of the Nervous System: With an Appendix on Hydrophobia To be serious, - ia the face of the authority of these eminent men, who hold by the ear, the one the philosophical, the other the physiological world, I believe that it can be established, that while facts and details have accumulated, they alone constitute all the progress that has been made; that not a step has been ta ken in advance, in the general doctrines of the science, since the time of Sir Charles Bell; that even his supposed discovery was, instead ofa step in advance, a step aside that, by placing what was, in reality, an attribute of mind, in a nerve, as a vis insita, and recognizing but a part of a truth as a whole, he has given a tangental impulse to the course of investigation, which has kept it off the track ever since. By endowing the anterior columns of the spinal marrow with a motor power, and the posterior columns with a sensitive power, he sanctioned and gave the chief impetus to subsequent inquiries into the reflex and automatic powers of the brain, ganglia and spinal cord, and the vital endowments of the nerves generally. If the mind or spiritual principle, as a real potential essence, active in the body, is lost sight of in these inquiries, it has been owing, in a great, measure, to the influence of his authority.
