Book excerpt: Los sujetos construyen una relación significativa con la matemática que nace de la unión entre la mente y el cuerpo, no con la matemática en sí misma. Esta afirmación explicita la principal motivación de este estudio: reconocer a la matemática encarnada y en relación con nuestras capacidades humanas, procesos cognitivos y nuestra historia social. El aprendizaje de la matemática se configura entonces, en una red de significados compartidos intersubjetivamente, una experiencia de relación que no se restringe a desempeños académicos. El propósito de la investigación fue comprender y analizar la experiencia de relación que han establecido con la matemática estudiantes que inician la educación universitaria, con distinto nivel de habilidad cuantitativa, a partir de la gestualidad expresada, la estrategia cognitiva elegida y las vivencias significativas en la etapa escolar, al resolver situaciones matemáticas de la vida cotidiana. A nivel general, el diseño metodológico fue de carácter mixto, y el tipo de estudio del tipo exploratorio-descriptivo-comparativo. A partir de éste diseño se desarrollaron tres estudios que abordaron distintos niveles de relación con la matemática: estrategias cognitivas, gestualidad y vivencias significativas de aprendizaje de la matemática escolar. La muestra estuvo constituida por 61 estudiantes, con distinto nivel de habilidad cuantitativa, que estaban iniciando su educación universitaria. Para recoger información se aplicó a nivel general una entrevista cognitiva que consideró cinco situaciones matemáticas a resolver por cada estudiante. Se construyeron escalas para evaluar estrategias holísticas y analíticas, una rúbrica para registrar gestualidad y lenguaje, y entrevistas abiertas cualitativas para indagar acerca de las vivencias de los estudiantes. Todos los instrumentos y procedimientos respetaron los criterios de validez y confiabilidad para la investigación científica. Los resultados permiten afirmar la presencia de dos estilos de relación de los estudiantes con la matemática, el estilo Analítico Acotado y el estilo Analítico Expandido. Ambos confirman el papel del cuerpo en la construcción de significado. Se concluye que los estudiantes dan cuenta de una experiencia de relación particular, subjetiva y holística con la matemática, que se expresa a partir de la fisionomía de su gestualidad, tono corporal, uso y claridad del lenguaje matemático utilizado, velocidad y tono de la voz, lo que se relaciona a su vez con las experiencias significativas de aprendizaje de la matemática escolar, y el desempeño en el test de situaciones matemáticas a resolver. Los estilos dan cuenta de una experiencia articulada a partir de múltiples dimensiones subjetivas e intersubjetivas. Se discuten las implicancias para la enseñanza de la matemática, asociada al desarrollo de experiencias de aprendizaje que vayan más allá estrategias clásicas de enseñanza y evaluación, considerando como punto de partida la experiencia de aprendizaje e historia personal del aprendiz, luego, en el proceso de comprensión, el estímulo y desarrollo de la gestualidad de este en interacción con la del docente, así como el desarrollo de aproximaciones tanto analíticas como holísticas en la resolución de situaciones matemáticas.

Las competencias observadas estuvieron basadas según las competencias globales y competencias matemáticas conocidas internacionalmente. Estas competencias se describieron desde diferentes dimensiones como el conocimiento, las destrezas y las actitudes de los estudiantes cuando resuelven problemas de estimación. Esta investigación cualitativa utilizó el estudio de caso como diseño en el cual participaron trece estudiantes de duodécimo grado de una escuela superior especializada de San Juan. Los estudiantes fueron entrevistados en una fase inicial para determinar sus percepciones sobre la estimación y el valor que le asignan en la solución de problemas. De estos, se seleccionaron 6 estudiantes para participar en la resolución de 9 problemas matemáticos y en una entrevista reflexiva. Los resultados mostraron que: (a) las competencias exhibidas estuvieron limitadas por destrezas básicas con errores de cómputos y de razonamiento; (b) las estrategias de resolución observadas se basaron en sus experiencias resolviendo este tipo de problemas de la vida diaria; (c) los estudiantes con experiencias extracurriculares en matemáticas resolvieron mejor los problemas matemáticos; (d) para los estudiantes, la estimación estuvo fuertemente vinculada con la experiencia de trabajar este tipo de problemas, ya sea la cotidianidad o en la sala de clases, y (e) los estudiantes no mostraron un desarrollo sólido del sentido numérico cuando resolvieron los problemas matemáticos de estimación. Basado en los hallazgos, se recomienda la incorporación e integración de problemas matemáticos de estimación al currículo con otras materias, empleando actividades de estimación vinculadas a las experiencias y los intereses de los estudiantes. Además, se recomienda realizar investigaciones inherentes a este tema desde grados primarios hasta la educación superior.
