Book Synopsis Nationalism and Regionalism in a Colonial Context by : David E.F. Henley
Download or read book Nationalism and Regionalism in a Colonial Context written by David E.F. Henley and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes and analyses Minahasan regional nationalism in the period up to 1942. Attention is given to precolonial antecedents, to the transformations brought about by compulsory coffee cultivation, Christian mission activity and Western education, to the role of local representative councils, to the privileged position which Minahasans came to occupy relative to other Indonesians within the colonial state, and to the ambiguous relationship between Minahasa and the Indonesian nationalist movement. Ideas and models drawn from the theoretical literature on nationalism are used throughout the study to illuminate the processes described. The concluding chapter also includes brief comparisons with other Indonesian regions and with the Philippines, together with an epilogue summarizing the developments of the Japanese occupation and the revolutionary period.

Book Synopsis Media Organization and Production by : Simon Cottle
Download or read book Media Organization and Production written by Simon Cottle and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2003-04-18 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the work of international contributors Media Organization and Production examines a wide range of global-local media organizations and the production of different mediums and genres. Following the editor′s introduction which sets out the principal differences of approach and defining debates, chapters address: transnational and national, commercial and public service corporations; international film and TV co-productions; children′s television news production, the historical development of ′liveness′ on radio, and music journalism; the politics and organizational forms of alternative media production including radical newspapers, video and the internet; and the changing ′production ecology′ of natural history television. These topics are examined through a variety of theoretical and conceptual frameworks that help to illuminate how cultural production often involves a complex articulation of differing influences and constraints, both material and discursive, intended and unintended, structurally determined and culturally mediated.Together the chapters in this book help to recover this complexity and thereby help us to better understand the nature and output of today′s media.
Book Synopsis The Capitalist and the Activist by : Tom C. W. Lin
Download or read book The Capitalist and the Activist written by Tom C. W. Lin and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2023 Axiom Business Books Award Silver Medalist (Business Commentary) 2023 Nautilus Book Award Silver Medalist (Social Change & Social Justice) This is the first in-depth examination of the important ongoing fusion of activism, capitalism, and social change masterfully told through a compelling narrative filled with vivid stories and striking studies. Corporations and their executives are at the forefront of some of the most contentious and important social issues of our time. Through pronouncements, policies, boycotts, sponsorships, lobbying, and fundraising, corporations are actively engaged in issues like immigration reform, gun regulation, racial justice, gender equality, and religious freedom. Despite corporate social activism being everywhere these days-witness how quickly companies and progressives united to oppose North Carolina's bathroom bill or support the Black Lives Matter movement-there has been no in-depth examination of the far-reaching consequences of this movement. What first principles should guide businesses' approaches? How should activists engage with businesses in a way that is most beneficial to their causes? What are potential pitfalls and risks associated with corporate social activism for activists, businesses, and society at large? Weaving studies and stories, Temple University professor of law, Tom C. W. Lin offers a road map for how we got here and a compass for where we are going as a nation of capitalists and activists seeking profit and progress.
Book Synopsis Employees and Corporate Governance by : Margaret M. Blair
Download or read book Employees and Corporate Governance written by Margaret M. Blair and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most scholarship on corporate governance in the last two decades has focused on the relationships between shareholders and managers or directors. Neglected in this vast literature is the role of employees in corporate governance. Yet "human capital," embodied in the employees, is rapidly becoming the most important source of value for corporations, and outside the United States, employees often have a significant formal role in corporate governance. This volume turns the spotlight on the neglected role of employees by analyzing many of the formal and informal ways that employees are actually involved in the governance of corporations, in U.S. firms and in large corporations in Germany and Japan. Examining laws and contexts, the essays focus on the framework for understanding employees' role in the firm and the implications for corporate governance. They explore how and why the special legal institutions in German and Japanese firms by which employees are formally involved in corporate governance came into being, and the impact these institutions have on firms and on their ability to compete. They also consider theoretical and empirical questions about employee share ownership. The result of a conference at Columbia University, the volume includes essays by Theodor Baums, Margaret M. Blair, David Charny, Greg Dow, Bernd Frick, Ronald J. Gilson, Jeffrey N. Gordon, Nobuhiro Hiwatari, Katharina Pistor, Louis Putterman, Edward B. Rock, Mark J. Roe, and Michael L. Wachter. Margaret M. Blair is a senior fellow in Economic Studies at the Brookings Institution and author of Ownership and Control: Rethinking Corporate Governance for the Twenty-first Century (Brookings, 1995). Mark J. Roe, professor of business regulation and director of the Sloan Project on Corporate Governance at Columbia Law School, is the author of Strong Managers, Weak Owners: The Political Roots of American Corporate Finance (Princeton, 1996).
