Book excerpt: "Planetary nebulae are a late stage of the evolution of intermediate-mass (~1-8 solar mass) stars. A planetary nebula is formed after an asymptotic giant branch star's ejected mass becomes ionized by the stellar core, which is on its way to becoming a white dwarf. The shaping of planetary nebulae is slowly unveiled through studies of young and evolving nebulae such as NGC 7027. I have conducted an extensive analysis of the first-ever suite of contemporaneous panchromatic Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 (HST/WFC3) images of NGC 7027, extending from near-UV to near-IR. Extinction correction is performed successfully on several HST/WFC3 images, facilitating analysis of the spatial distribution of H recombination and forbidden emission lines within the nebula. The resulting extinction-corrected line ratio images and line ratio diagnostic, as well as an analysis of forbidden emission lines, are used are used to distinguish between photoionization and shock-ionized regions and to place constraints on the gas densities in the shocked regions. This analysis revealed regions dominated by shocks in the NW and SE lobes of NGC 7027. All of these results provide insight on the strength of NGC 7027's outflows, confirming previous assertions that NGC 7027 is among the youngest and most rapidly evolving PNe."--Abstract.

Previous meetings have been held in Tatranska Lomnica (Czechoslovakia); Liege (Belgium); Ithaca, New York (U. S. A); and London (Great Britain). IAU Symposium 131 was sponsored by IAU Commision 34, on Interstellar Matter and co-sponsored by IAU Commisions 35 and 36 on Stellar Constitution and Theory of Stellar Atmospheres. The symposium was held at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico in Mexico City, October 5-9, 1987. It took place in one of the old buildings of the University of Mexico in the downtown area. The inner patio of the building provided very pleasant surroundings for the poster sessions and for extensive discussions among the participants. The meeting was attended by 160 scientists from 22 countries. The Scientific Organizing Committee,under the chairmanship of J.B. Kaler, prepared a comprehensive scientific program based on a set of invited presentations. All contributed papers were presented in poster form. The Scientific Organizing Committee would like to thank the staff of the University of Illinois Department of Astronomy: Dr. Ron Allen for granting financial support; Carol Stickrod, Louise Browning, Deana Griffin and Sandie Osterbur for their help with the organization. In addition there is an article describing modern laboratory studies of Rydberg atoms to probe the basic physics of atomic structure, and articles describing the theory of collisions and radiation upon Rydberg atoms leading to observate effects to be used as diagnostic tools in astromony. This book focuses on the 25 years of astronomical research with radio recombination lines (RRLs) since their discovery in 1965. It covers a wide range of topics: papers dealing with research into Rydberg atoms both in the laboratory and in the interstellar medium of our galaxy and others; papers on the interaction of radiation and atomic systems, as well as with the effects of inadiabatic collisions between these atoms and both ions and electrons. It deals with astronomical observations of atoms with `diameters' ranging from 0.08 to 50 mum a size factor of 625. It deals with RRLs in absorption, in emission and as true masers. And it deals with plasmas with temperatures ranging from 10 to greater than 104 kelvins, and with an even greater range of volume densities. Much new work is reported, including low frequency RRLs discovered in 1980 and the maser RRLs from the star MWC349, discovered in 1989. The advent of aperture synthesis telescopes and large single-element telescopes have made possible RRL studies with high angular resolution. The sum total of the work reported here will make the volume a platform from which to search new horizons in RRL research.
