Book excerpt: Executive Summary: During the past 20 years, the UNDP/UNFPA/WHO/WORLD BANK Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction has contributed to the development and strengthening of research capacities in the Region of the Americas. This process has resulted in a series of research networks that explore crucial issues in the areas of reproductive biology, reproductive epidemiology and, most recently, social science issues relevant to reproductive health. Specific projects are focused on issues of global interest as well as on national priorities, identified through the continuous evaluation of reproductive health status. The research productivity of the network of collaborating institutions is reflected in major contributions to the understanding and prevention of reproductive health problems affecting populations in the Region, and by their participation in the development of most of the fertility regulation methods presently used in the world. Nevertheless several areas in the Region still show high levels of reproductive morbidities that require urgent attention. The building up and maintenance of this very productive network of reproductive health centres has required the long-term contribution of several funding agencies, both national and international, including WHO. It is essential that this process be continued and expanded in order that the scientific community involved in reproductive health research in the Region can make an increasing contribution to the improvement of the health status of the women, men and children of the Americas.
