Book excerpt: This report compares the performance of the isotropic bridge deck design method, also known as the empirical design method, with that of the conventional AASHTO design method given Michigan's environment and vehicle loads. This study looked at ten isotropic decks and several conventional decks on parallel structures. Since the performance of the isotropic design was found to be satisfactory and comparable to the conventional design, it is recommended that the department continue use of the isotropic design method where cost savings are realized.
Book Synopsis Installation and Performance Evaluation of the Wabocrete FMV Joint System for Bridge Decks by : Marvin Henry Hilton
Download or read book Installation and Performance Evaluation of the Wabocrete FMV Joint System for Bridge Decks written by Marvin Henry Hilton and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Wabocrete FMV bridge deck expansion joint system was installed on the Alternate Rte. 58 bridge over the Clinch River in November 1986. The bridge was placed in service in mid-1987. The report concerns an installation and performance evaluation of the joint system. It was found that the Wabocrete FMV joint system offers some installation advantages over preformed joint systems. The blockout area of the bridge deck does not have to be as smooth or as precisely dimensioned since the joint's anchorage system can be leveled prior to placement of the bonding material. Installation and future maintenance problems involving anchor bolts are eliminated since the system relies on bond rather than mechanical anchorages. After over two years of service, the Vabocrete system has performed well. During this period, the joint has accommodated all thermal and structural movements, withstood traffic impacts and remained leak proof. The joint does tend to accumulate debris and should be routinely cleaned. The performance of the joint during the period of the study has not given any reason to suggest that it not be used on new bridge decks similar to the one studied. A longer term evaluation, however, would be necessary for a fullrecommendation. The use of the Wabocrete FMV, and similar systems, as retrofit on older bridges should be approached with caution. Furthermore, these systems shouldprobably not be used in retrofit situations in conjunction with adjacent asphaltic overlays.

This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis summarizes the results of an experimental investigation on the performance evaluation of bridge deck concrete made with optimized aggregate gradation. The research conducted was part of the project sponsored by South Dakota Department of Transportation. The primary objective of the projects is to validate the research findings of the laboratory concrete against the performance of field concrete that used optimized aggregate gradation. The performance of field concrete used in three newly constructed bridge decks was evaluated by conducting a series of laboratory tests to determine compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, drying shrinkage resistance, alkali aggregate reactivity, sulfate attack, freeze-thaw durability, and rapid chloride permeability. This also includes measuring and documenting of the extent of cracks developed in the new bridge decks, and comparing with that of other similar existing bridges in the state. The study revealed that field concrete had good workability and finishability. The fresh concrete and micro-structural properties of the field concrete are similar to that of control concrete and the optimum laboratory concrete. The average compressive strength of the field concrete was higher that of control concrete and optimum laboratory concrete. The field concrete showed better resistance to sulfate attack, chloride permeability, drying shrinkage, alkali aggregate reactivity, and freeze-thaw exposure than control concrete and optimum laboratory concrete. The total number of cracks and the corresponding crack areas in the new bridge decks were significantly smaller than those of bridge decks made from A-45 concrete. It is recommended that the optimized aggregate gradation mixture proportions of Class F fly ash (20% cement replacement by weight) be specified for bridge deck concrete. Crack surveys need to be carried out on the new bridges annually for next three years to monitor any potential deterioration.

Book Synopsis Evaluating Concrete Bridge Deck Performance by :
Download or read book Evaluating Concrete Bridge Deck Performance written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the service life of concrete bridge decks designed by traditional procedures is often shorter than desired, their ability to withstand constant and heavy use in a variety of operating environments is of major concern. In this project, the relative performance of three bridge decks constructed with different concretes and reinforcing steel configurations was studied to help determine which deck offers the best performance over time. To achieve this objective, an array of strain and temperature instrumentation was embedded in each of the bridge decks prior to placing the deck concrete. The decks were tested under controlled live loads to characterize their structural behavior. The first set of such tests was performed immediately after the bridge decks were completed, and the second was conducted two years later. The long term performance of the three decks under environmental loads (notably, changes in temperature) was studied by continuously monitoring selected strain gages in each bridge, and by conducting periodic visual distress surveys and corrosion tests. In the data collected and analyzed from the live load tests and environmental response monitoring of the three decks, only subtle behavioral differences have been observed. While some aspects of the response have been found to statistically differ between bridges and over time, the significance of these differences remains uncertain, as the bridges are relatively young, and they only exhibit nominal signs of distress. The significance of these differences may become clear in the future, if substantial differences in deck durability and performance emerge over time. The visual distress surveys have found that the majority of the cracking that has occurred in the decks is near the integral abutments and that the Empirical deck had the most extensive cracking in this regard. The analysis presented herein generally serves as a baseline for the relative condition of the three bridges before prolonged demands from traffic and the environment. Should a follow-on project be initiated, data obtained from continued long-term monitoring and live load testing will likely provide a more complete body of evidence from which to ascertain which deck design offers superior performance. Relative to cost, initial expense for each deck was similar, thus the relative cost-to-benefit for the decks will be dependent on the service life that they offer.
